2012-2013 Nursing Undergraduate and Graduate Programs Receive National Recognition June 25, 2013 The Ursuline College Breen School of Nursing is one of six recipients to receive the 2013 NLN Hearst Foundations Excellence in Geriatric Education Awards. The award for Excellence in Geriatric Education is a multi-year competitive awards program recognizing nursing schools that demonstrate exceptional instruction and innovation when teaching care of older adults. A dozen schools of nursing will be selected for this prestigious honor between 2012 and 2015. According Patricia A. Sharpnack, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Nursing Programs at the Breen School of Nursing, The number of people age 65 and older is expected to grow from 39 million in 2008 to 72 million by the year 2030. Faculty in the undergraduate program of The Breen School of Nursing used creative teaching methods to sensitize students to the special needs of the older adult in clinical experiences, simulation and in the classroom. We are honored by this recognition that differentiates our program and school as a model in nursing education. The Excellence in Geriatric Education Awards program is a component of the Hearst Foundation's $400,000 grant to the National League for Nursing (NLN) to expand Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACES). The Breen School of Nursing will receive the award at the NLN Education Summit in Washington, DC in September, 2013. The award will be presented by Dr. Judith Halstead, NLN President, and Dr. Beverly Malone, NLN CEO, along with representatives of the Hearst Foundations. Faculty from the Breen School of Nursing will present their innovative approaches to teaching geriatrics at an NLN Education Summit pre-summit Invitational ACES workshop session. Additionally, the Breen School of Nursing's Masters in Nursing program made the list of best MSN programs in the country by Masters Degree Online.
