Major responsibilities included laboratory and clinical instruction of ADN students in psychiatric mental health nursing VOLUNTEER SERVICE TO COMMUNITY 2008-present Sojourners EMPOWER and weekly health education group. Women who are in residential substance abuse treatment have many roadblocks as they move toward sobriety and mainstreaming to a new life. During my doctoral program at the University of Kentucky, this vulnerable population became of interest to me as a population in need of nursing services. I completed my doctoral capstone with the women at Sojourners, a Hamilton residential treatment facility. My capstone involved EMPOWER, a pre and post survey of these women relative to their health perceptions and health needs as they travel along the sobriety pathway. This work is now a manuscript which will be published December 2011 in the Journal of Addictions Nursing. Since March 2008, I have been conducting weekly one hour health education groups, alternating at two different residential sites. I use visual aids and conversation starters that relate to health to spur conversation and questions. I have learned that women in recovery enjoy basic instruction in physiology and body functions.
