COMPACT PISTON AIR MOTORS Your Goba Force In Air Power
GLOBE AIR POWER Compact Piston Air Motors ATEX Ex II-2-GDc-T5 WORKING PRINCIPLE The compact radia piston air motor operates without rod or crank shaft. The radia arranged pistons trave aong a curve and are controed by the centre. The static contro shaft suppies the driving pistons with the necessary air. Air suppy and reease openings aong the static shaft are periodicay opened and cosed by the rotation of the rotor to pressurise or reease the pistons in an appropriate sequence. CONTENTS PAGE ADVANTAGES/WHY CHOOSE A COMPACT PISTON AIR MOTOR? 3 Three of the seven pistons are contributing to the torque at any moment, when being driven down one of the four curves. When reaching its owest point on the curve, the pistons can reease the air through the static shaft. ADVANTAGES Air motors offer a unique form of drive and incorporate advantages not found in other prime movers. Simpe and inexpensive variabe speed and torque contro with a fow contro vave and/or pressure reguator. Intrinsicay safe for exposion proof environments. The compact piston air motors are certified according to the European Exposion Directive ATEX II cat. 2 G&D T5. Air motors can be staed indefinitey under oad. They wi not overheat or burn out. Long ifetime because of ow friction and a minimum of parts that are exposed to wear. Controabe over a wide speed range. Instanty reversibe, operated with a simpe contro vave. Resistant to warm, dirty and damp conditions. No shock start up which improves the ife span of the equipment. WHY CHOOSE A COMPACT PISTON AIR MOTOR? Within the air motor famiy the compact piston air motor takes a specia pace, because this motor is often used in appications where other air motors can not be used. High torque at ow speed of rotation. Therefore most of the times a gearbox is not necessary. Highest torque at start-up. The compact piston air motor does not have a variabe starting torque. This aways guarantees the rated starting torque. Possibiity to connect up to three units in series if higher torque or power is required. Very ow air consumption due the use of pistons, ow interna friction and ow interna air eakage. Low noise emission that fufis the noise reguations without requiring ear protection. The compact piston air motors can be suppied directy couped to a wide range of gearboxes such as panetary, heica, beve heica and worm gears. Due the ow speed of rotation the compact piston air motor is especiay suitabe for appications in which the air motor is constanty in sta. Compact construction made out of auminium with stee shaft. Aso avaiabe in a pastic housing with a stainess stee shaft. Integrated brake function. When both the inet and outet port are pressurised the motor functions as a brake with a torque of 50% of the starting torque. Abe to run without ubrication. The compact piston air motors can operate with a minimum of ubrication. Compete oi-ess operation is possibe in certain appications. APPLICATIONS Compact piston air motors are used in numerous of appications. Most suitabe are ight and medium duties at ow speed operations. A combination of a GLOBE compact piston air motor with a arge variety of gearboxes is possibe when ower speed operations and/or higher torques are demanded for the appication. The most typica appications for compact piston air motors are: Mixing equipment Turntabes Winding equipment Packing machines Conveyor bets Cap screwing machines Hose Rees CONTROLLING AIR MOTORS Speed reguation Controing the performance of an air motor is done by reguating the air suppy. This is reativey cheap and simpe. The methods to reguate the air suppy are throtting and pressure reguation. Throtting The air fow is controed by pacing a fow contro vave at the inet port or the outet port of the air motor. Throtting wi reduce the maximum speed of the motor but wi not affect the starting performance; the air pressure is unaffected at ow fow conditions i.e. starting. Note the difference in the graph between throtting on the inet port and outet port. Throtting methods Inet throtting, uni-directiona motor. Outet throtting, uni-directiona motor. Pressure reguation The speed and power can aso be reduced by instaing a pressure reguator on the incoming air suppy. The pressure reguator reduces the air pressure to the motor. A pressure reguator is aways fitted on the inet port. By using a pressure reguator the torque on the output shaft wi be affected, starting torque is best controed with this method. Pressure reguating method Inet throtting, bi-directiona motor. Pressure reguation, uni-directiona motor. 4 When both the speed and the torque are to be controed the best configuration is to use a pressure reguator in the air ine to the motor and a fow contro vave on the outet port. This way every point in the torque-speed graph can be set accuratey.
Air suppy Air quaity To insure optima working conditions for the GLOBE piston air motors, the air suppy must be dry, fitered and ubricated. A 5 micron fiter or better is recommended. The GLOBE piston air motors shoud be ubricated sufficienty. Oiess operations are possibe in certain appications. Air ine restrictions Air ine restrictions on the inet side of the motor wi resut in performance oss. Therefore it is important to make sure that the desired air pressure is avaiabe at the motor during operation. The pressure reading at the compressor or pressure reguator may be different then the pressure avaiabe at the motor. Performance oss can aso occur by an exhaust restriction generating back pressure on the outet side of the motor. An insufficienty sized siencer, vave or couping is usuay the cause. Directions of rotation The GLOBE piston air motors can be used both as a uni-directiona and as a bi-directiona air motor. When the air motor is used in a non-reversibe appication, it is sufficient to use a 2/2 or a 3/2 vave. For the reversibe motor you can use either a 5/3 or two 3/2 vave to gain directiona contro. GEARED VANE AIR MOTORS Athough air motors can be adjusted over a wide range of speed and torque, the output characteristics are not aways suitabe for the appication. To achieve the required output speed and torque a gearbox can be couped directy to the air motor. GLOBE Airmotors BV has a wide range of gear units such as panetary, heica, beva heica and worm gears in their program. Consut Gobe Airmotors BV or your oca distributor for more detaied information. Uni-directiona motor with 3/2 vave. Bi-directiona motor with two 3/2 vaves. Bi-directiona motor with 5/3 vave. 5
