Welcome! Welcome to the Great Maine BBQ Challenge proclaimed by our governor as a State Championship and KCBS and NEBS sanctioned BBQ competitions in the state of Maine in 2016. The competitions will be held at Smuggler s Den Campground in Southwest Harbor, Maine, surrounded by the beautiful and picturesque Acadia National Park with easy access to hiking trails, canoing, kayaking, and breathtaking scenery. The Great Maine BBQ Challenge will be a three-day pet-friendly event beginning with Friday and Saturday s pro-only KCBS sanctioned competition including a people s choice award contest followed on Sunday by a NEBS and a Kids Q competition. Whether you are competing in, or judging for the Great Maine BBQ Challenge, you will enjoy the hospitality you ll only find here at Smuggler s Den Campground. One of the primary objectives of this year s competition is to provide the teams and judges with an exceptional experience. We welcome you all and look forward to hosting you this September. Check-In & Cooking Sites All BBQ teams must check in during specified Check-In times listed below. Sites will be 20 x30 marked out abutting one another unless extra space was requested. Make sure your work area and equipment can fit within these parameters. All vehicles should be parked in the separate designated parking areas adjacent to the cooking sites except during set-up and break-down periods. Spaces will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Each site is limited to 20 amps of power to plug in small lighting and appliances. You must bring your own extension cord at least 100ft in length. If you do not need any power or have your own generator, please let us know. Water access will be available. Containers can be used for transport. We do have water hook-ups on site for hose use. Hosted by:
General Information Trash will be removed on a regular basis. Outdoor porta potties will be located throughout the field. There is also a large, very clean bathroom area with sinks and showers. Please bring your own towels. Please bring separate containers for grease and ash. Disposal areas will be available on site. Fire extinguishers will be inspected at the time of meat inspection Sanitation (wash, rinse, disinfect) will be checked at meat inspection Proper storage of meat is required. Must be maintained below 40 F or above 140 F Proper handling of food is required. Vinyl or latex gloves should be used. Directions: From Interstate 95 take exit 182A (old exit 45A) to Route 395; follow to the end (3-5 miles) on to Route 1A through Lucerne to Ellsworth (about 30 miles) In Ellsworth Route 1A will turn into Route 3 Continue on Route 3 past Wal-Mart through the town of Trenton To the head of Mount Desert Island (about 10 miles) where there will be a traffic light. Contest Details & Schedule Thursday, September 8th, 2016 Check-In: 12:00PM-7:00PM Sites open at noon. Teams may load in between 12:00pm-7:00pm on Friday. Overnight camping for contestants only. Quiet Hours: 10:00PM-7:00AM Quiet time is strictly enforced. Please be respectful of your fellow competitors and keep noise to a minimum. Friday & Saturday September 9th, and 10th, 2016 KCBS Pro and People s Choice Check-In: 7:00AM-10:00AM Teams may load in between 7:00am-10:00am on Friday morning. The festival begins at 5:00pm and gates will be closed to all vehicle entry. Friday, September 9th 6:00pm Cooks meeting Saturday, September 10th People s Choice Contest Spare Ribs: 2:00PM Turn-In: Please consider participating in our People s Choice contest. Our festival attendees are eager to sample some of the best barbecue in the country! Saturday s People s Choice will feature Spare Ribs which will be provided. Ribs shall be turned in at the Sampling Pit at 2:00pm in a contest provided half pan. A people s choice official will mark each pan with an anonymous ID # to track the voting. The team with the most votes will receive $50 and a trophy. KCBS BBQ Contest: The contest is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and abides by all KCBS rules & regulations. Contestants will be competing in the following categories: Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork, and Brisket. Awards and prize money will be presented for Grand Champion and Reserve Champion, as well as from First through Fifth place in each individual categories. Contestants will be competing in the following categories: Chicken Wings (9 x9 Box Provided), Deep frying is permitted using wood or charcoal, Pork Loin Chops (Other names are, Center Loin Chop or Loin Pork Chop or Top Loin Chop) (9 x9 Box Provided), Dessert (Open Container Maximum of 18 by 12 ). Mystery meat, (Mystery will be given to teams first thing Sunday morning) All categories will have OPEN GARNISH. Dessert entry: Teams can bring in already prepared, and or pre-prepped/pre-made components ahead of time, from home. All prep and cooking MUST be done on site. NO STORE BOUGHT PRODUCTS EXCEPT FOR NEEDED INGREDIENTS. Teams must prepare entry for judging so it can be eaten by hand.
