1 COMPETITIONS All competition administrative duties will take place in the administration building. There are many competitions that occur during the event which all takes place at different locations on the site. Participants all come to the Administration building to register if they have not already registered. Bannock Baking Competition: The Site Manager is responsible to prepare the fire pit, bring wood close to it and move bleachers for the audience. The competition coordinator will ask for assistance to bring tables and chairs close to the area on Friday morning. Name of coordinator: All ingredients for the bannock baking competition are supplied by Back to Batoche Days. Registration is $10 per participant. Prize money will be posted based on sponsorship and entries: 1 st Prize: 2 nd Prize: 3 rd Prize: These ingredients include: Flour Salt Baking Powder Judges are supplied with: Score sheets & pens Tables and chairs Water Oil & a frying pan Tables covered with a plastic lining. Plates, knives, butter Other items: Tape, scissors and garbage bags The winners` names are announced by the MC later during the day, posted to the website and included in the Newsletter the following day.

2 Fiddling Competition: The fiddling competition is separated in two parts; fiddling competition preliminaries and fiddling competition finals. The preliminary fiddling competition takes place on the main stage at 3-4:30 pm on Saturday. The finals fiddling competition occurs at 12:30-1:45 pm on Sunday. The competitors are divided into four categories: Novice (ages 12 years old and younger) Youth (ages 13 through 18 years old) Adult (ages 19 through 64 years old) Golden Age (ages 65 years old and over) The order of each round is randomly selected, and once selected it is displayed in the warm up room and at the information tent. The judges remain the same throughout the week and they are listed on backtobatoche.org. Fiddling contest rules: 1. All contestants must register before their category begins. 2. Any fiddlers paid to perform at the festival will not be allowed to enter the fiddling competition. 3. Contestants can move up one category of age but cannot go down. By doing so you understand that you will be competing against competitors older than yourself. 4. Contestants can only enter 1 class. 5. The order of when the competitors will be competing will be posted at the warm up tent. Contestants must be ready when called. 6. Each contestant is responsible for finding out when he/she is to compete and must be in the warm up room. Contestants missing their turn will be moved to the next available time slot. 7. Contestants are identified only by number and must have their number clearly displayed for the MC and Judges viewing. 8. Judges advance the top 8 from the fiddling preliminaries to the fiddling finals. 9. All fiddlers will adhere to good sportsmanship. Fiddlers and encouraged to be respectful while others are performing. Any acts of disrespect or ridicule will not be tolerated and will be subject to point deduction or disqualification. 10. All fiddlers must be drug and alcohol free for the duration of the competition. Anyone who is caught under the influence of drugs or alcohol will result in the dismissal from the competition.

3 11. No additional points will be awarded to individuals dressed in traditional Métis clothing. Competitors may perform in traditional outfits if they wish for the enjoyment and celebration the Back to Batoche Days, however being dressed traditionally will not give the participant extra points. 12. All contestants winning a trophy or money must appear on stage at the closing ceremonies to receive their award. 13. All judges decisions are final. The winners of the event are announced at 4 pm on Sunday. The prize payouts for the fiddling competition will be posted based on sponsorship and entries: Novice (12 years old and younger) Youth (13 through 18 years old) Adult (19 through 64 years old) Golden Age (65 years old and over) Jigging Competition: The jigging competition is separated in three parts; jigging competition preliminaries, jigging competition semi-finals and jigging competition finals. All jigging competitions takes place on the main stage. The preliminary jigging competition takes place on the main stage at 1-2:00 pm on Friday. The jigging semi-finals competition occurs at 1:00-3:00 pm on Saturday. The jigging finals competition occurs at 2:00-3:00 pm on Sunday. During this event judges are encouraged to value the fact that they are making an impression of each competitor that are on stage. A good judge is upbeat and appreciative of the efforts of every dancer, no matter what skill level. The competitors are judged on traditional style, timing, creativity and attitude. The competitors are divided into six categories men & women: Mini Métis (ages 1 through 5 years old) Junior (ages 6-12 years old) Youth (ages 13 through 18 years old)

4 Young Adult (ages 19 through 34 years old) Adult (ages 35 through 64 years old) Senior (ages 65 years old and over) The order of each round is randomly selected, and once selected it is displayed in the warm up room and at the information tent. Steps considered traditional and contemporary are counted. 13. If a step is done on the right foot, it must also be done on the left foot. 14. A tap of the foot must follow all slides that are done with the feet. 15. No steps can be duplicated unless they are danced as part of another step.

There will be a jig-off in the case of a tie. The contest judges will decide the format as per their class in the contest. 19. 6 Women s Young Adult (19-34 years old) Horseshoe Competition The horseshoe competition is a friendly and non-commissioned competition. We need to improve the grounds if we want to improve the competition and increase the prize money. Registration is $10 per person and the prize money is the revenues from registration split up among the winners.
