1 ANS 431 - Reproductive Physiology of Domestic Animals (Spring 2015) Instructor: Dr. Eduardo L. (Primary Contact for any queries) Time: Lecture: 10:00 to 10:50 a.m., MWF at room AG 170 Labs: 8:00 to 9:50 a.m. (Section 1), 10:00 to 11:50 a.m. (Section 2) Thursday at AG 114. Attendance is mandatory in laboratories. Lab coats for labs in AG 114, and adequate barn clothes for labs at the farms are mandatory. Course Learning Objectives: The objective of this course is to allow the students to know and understand the following: general anatomy and histology of the male and female reproductive systems; endocrinology of the estrous cycle, pregnancy, and lactation; estrous cycle and gestation in farm animals; functions of the cells of the ovary and testis; basics of oocyte and spermatozoa maturation; transport of gametes through the male and female reproductive systems; steps involved in fertilization; basic events of embryo and fetal development; basics of maternal recognition of pregnancy, implantation, and placentation; events of parturition; events of courtship and mating in farm animals; general causes and examples of reproductive failure in farm animals; reproductive peculiarities and management of cattle, sheep, horses, swine, and poultry; basics of reproductive-assisted biotechnologies including AI, estrus synchronization, superovulation, embryo transfer, IVF, sperm and embryo sexing, transgenics, and reproductive immunization. 2 Every lecture handout will have several questions to serve as a study guide for the students to prepare for the quizzes and exams. Students are encouraged to answer the questions after every lecture day and before the next lecture. Study guides are going to be do every week. Please see below for more details. Grading: Study guides ( quizzes ): Study guides will be due weekly and are take-home format. Each PowerPoint lecture will contain a final slide with objective, straight forward questions highlighting important concepts from that lecture. Students will be required to answer only 5 questions from each lecture and will turn in the answers every Monday from all lectures covered up through the previous Friday. Since each week will consist of 2 to 3 lectures, students should expect to be responsible for answering 10 to 15 questions per week. Of these, 3 questions will be chosen at random and graded to account for the weekly quiz grade. Once the quizzes are graded, the answers to all questions will be posted on Blackboard to serve as a study guide. Exams: Exams will be given during the lecture period in room AG 170. Students may come early and remain later than the scheduled lecture period. Contact instructor for specifics. Exam formats may vary throughout the

3 semester, but students should expect to see multiple choice, true/false, short answer and essay questions (this can also be expected of the quizzes). Students should review their missed questions and return exam on the following class. Students will miss points if exams are NOT returned on time! Four Mid-terms (Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3) and a Final Exam will be given in the course. Make-up exams will be essay or oral at the instructors' discretion. 20% will be taken off the top of any make-ups given to students who do not notify an instructor before the regularly scheduled exam. The Final may be 50% comprehensive. The final will only be given at the scheduled time - no make-ups or early exams. Students that do not take the final will be given "0" on the final or an incomplete depending on the circumstances determined by the instructor. Attendance: Attendance is important and will be considered mandatory in both lab and lecture periods and will be factored into the student s grade, accounting for 10%. Grading Breakdown: 15% Laboratory and Attendance A=90 to 100% 20% Study guides ( quizzes ): B=80 to 89% 50% 3 Exams C=70 to 79% 15% Final Exam D=60 to 69% 100% Total F=<60% Changes to these grade items and points allocated are at the discretion of the instructor. If grades are applied to a curve the instructor reserve the right to lower the curve as appropriate. The curve will not be raised. Graduate students will not be included in the undergraduate student curve. Academic Honesty: The academic honesty policy will follow the Student Conduct Code.
