2015-2016 Regional Competition Guidelines DANCE EDUCATORS OF AMERICA, INC. (DEA) IS A TEACHING ORGANIZATION AND REQUIRES SPORTSMAN LIKE BEHAVIOR AT ALL TIMES. 2015-2016 RULE CHANGES AND FREQUENCY ASKED QUESTIONS ARE IN RED ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: To participate in a Regional Competition, teachers along with their competing students MUST be registered for that Regional Convention Workshop; except those students over 24 and under 5 years of age as of January 1, 2016. A teacher or student may register for only the Convention Workshop Classes and does not have to compete in the competition. A Student that is using a DEA Regional Workshop Scholarship for that Regional Convention Registration must be registered at the Host City Hotel to use the scholarship, coupon or discount. The exception is if the student lives in the host City. A routine may compete in a DEA Regional Competition if it has won a Scholarship, Cash Award or DEA Dollars, but is not eligible to win the same award. Students that wish to attend another DEA Regional Competition will not have to pay for that Convention Workshop (DEA s 2 nd Workshop Free offer), as long as they compete in that Regional competition. Those students are not eligible to receive any scholarships. Owner/Teacher(s) or Salaried Employees that are competing in a routine, the routine must be submitted on a Semi-Professional Level. Semi-Professional Level and Pre Small Fry and Extended Senior Age Category routines are not eligible for Cash Awards, DEA Dollars, Scholarships, High Score Award or Top 5 Award; but will be awarded a Medal, Plaque and Pins. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 28 Days in advance of event ALL Official DEA Competition & Workshop forms MUST be submitted using the online registration system. No TBA. Please ensure accuracy of age & spelling of names and music. Page 1 of 6

REGISTRATION: All registration must be done using DanceComp Genie online Registration system. PAYMENT: Credit Card payment can be made using the online checkout system. We accept Visa, MC, Discover and American Express. Payments may be made by check. The registration is not complete until payment is received. Teachers must be registered and paid a full 28 days from the start of the event. Teachers not registered and paid in full will not have students entered in the program. DEA MEMBER REBATE: DEA Member that registers and pay in full for their competition/convention registration 45 days before the competition/convention regional event will receive a rebate on their competition fees. Member that spends Member that spends Member that spends $1,000- $4,999 per Competition Registration (not including Convention Registration fees) receives a 5% rebate of their competition fees $5,000 - $9,999 per Competition Registration (not including Convention registration fees) receives a 10% rebate of their competition fees $10,000 & up per Competition Registration (not including Convention Registration fees) receives a 15% rebate of their competition fees INJURED DANCERS: Dancers that are injured prior to the Regional Event, and are planning on attending a DEA National Event must be registered for all of the routines that they are planning to perform at the National. With the proper documentation a credit will be issued to the registering studio. REFUND POLICY: ALL competition & convention fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. DEA has the ability to apply a credit to the teachers account that can be used for a future event if DEA feels it is appropriate. LOSS & INJURY: Dance Educators of America, Staff, Faculty and the housing facility are not responsible for personal injury or property loss. FLASH PHOTOS OR VIDEO: For the safety of the performers, flash photography and videography is strictly prohibited and may result in disqualification. AGE CATEGORY: The age of student(s) as of January 1, 2016 will be used at Regionals and National to calculate the age.. The Pre Small Fry, Extended/Senior and Adult Age Categories routines are not eligible for Cash Awards, DEA Dollars, Scholarships, or High Score Award; but will be awarded a Medal, Plaque and Pins. PRE SMALL FRIES 3-4 SMALL FRY 5-8 JUNIOR 9 10 PRE-TEEN 11 12 TEEN 13 15 SENIOR 16 19 EXTENDED/SENIOR 20 24 ADULT 25 and over AGE CALCULATION: The average age of all students in a routine; drop the decimal. Group entries cannot compete in more than one age division and must remain in the same age division. BUMP RULE: Applies when there is a 2+ Age Category differential between a routines average dancer s Age Category and the oldest dancer in the routine. The Bump Rule will determine the Age Category that a routine competes, based on the ages of the dancers. For routines that have older dancers that Page 2 of 6

are dancing with dancers of a younger age, if it is determined that there is a 2+ Age Category differential, we will bump the Age Category of that routine up one Age Category. CLASS/LEVEL: PRE COMPETITIVE LEVEL: this level is for the dancer(s) whose classes and rehearsal time does not exceed 4 hours weekly. This is for first time competitors and or dancers(s) with limited competition experience. Any level that contains 25% or more of competitive level dancers must be entered in the competitive level. Pre Competitive Level routines are not eligible for Cash Awards, DEA Dollars, Scholarships, or High Score Award; but can be awarded a Medal, Plaque and Pins. COMPLETIVE LEVEL: this level is for the dancer(s) that study more than 4 hours per week. SEMI-PROFESSIONAL LEVEL: Owner/Teacher(s) or Salaried Employees entries must be submitted as Semi-Professional and there are no exceptions. Semi-Professional Level routines are not eligible for Cash Awards, DEA Dollars, Scholarships, or High Score Award; but can be awarded a Medal, Plaque and Pins. ENTRY TYPE: DANCERS DANCERS SOLO 1 DUET 2 TRIO 3 GROUP 4 8 LINE 9 & up PRODUCTION 9 & up DANCE CATEGORIES: ACRO: BALLET CHARACTER: CONTEMPORARY: ETHNIC: FLAMENCO: HIP HOP: JAZZ: LYRICAL: MODERN: POINTE: SPECIALTY: TAP: THEATRE DANCE: Consists of a blend of Acro tricks and dance movements Consists of ballet technique, including classical steps Any national or folk dance (i.e.: Mazurka, Polka, and Schottische) Consists of ballet, jazz and/or lyrical movements fused with modern elements Dance deriving from another culture (i.e.: Hawaiian, Filipino, and East Indian) Consists of Spanish dance with castanets etc. Consists of street, funk & urban style jazz Consists of classic jazz technique Consists of ballet, jazz and/or modern technique Interpretive movement in a contemporary modern style Showing pointe technique A routine with props Consists of tap technique in tap shoes A Broadway show or movie musical dance TIME LIMITS: A 2 point deduction will result for every 5 seconds over the Max Time for the Entry Type ENTRY TYPE MAX TIME Solo 2 Minutes 45 Seconds Page 3 of 6

Duet 2 Minutes 45 Seconds Trio 2 Minutes 45 Seconds Group 3 Minutes Line 3 Minutes Production 5 8 Minutes EXTENDED TIME may be purchased for $5.00 per minute per routine. MUSIC: Music must be on a CD, IPod or on Drop Box. Teachers have the ability to print the Drop Box Instructions directly from the Web Site. CD s must be of professional quality and contain one routine per CD. All music should be recorded at the proper speed. Clearly mark each CD and IPods with studio name and name of music. Make sure that the repeat function is not enabled for all playlists on an IPod. Teachers must use judgment when selecting music and its lyrical content. Vulgar, derogatory or sexually suggestive words and inappropriate dance moves are cause for disqualification. TEACHER LINE UP: Upon completion of the Line Up, all Participating Teachers will be able to print the Regional line up from their Dance Comp Genie Studio Account. Teachers are responsible for confirming its accuracy prior to the event. Unconfirmed line ups are interpreted as correct and will perform as-is. Dance Educators of America, Inc. will not print programs on the Regional Level. Each teacher has the option to print the lineup for the event from Dance Comp Genie for all of their parents. Dance Educators of America, Inc. along with Dance Comp Genie have an app for the phone that can be purchased for $4.99. This app has the competition in real time, convention information, faculty and judges along with restaurant information. The DEA scholarship fund receives half of all monies for this app. TIME & PROGRAM: Students with makeup or costume changes that require additional time to prepare between performances MUST note this change on the entry form. Once the program has been issued 7 days before competition date NO CHANGES will be allowed. PROPS: All props must be set on stage by the studio within the time limits or additional time needs to be purchased. Please note time begins from the moment the sets/props start to be set up. Purchase minutes that include set up and strike of your sets/props. Please have clean up after prop removal. DEA staff is not responsible for set-up or breakdown. In the event of damage to the stage, riser, flooring or facility as a result of the movement, set-up or breakdown of props, it shall be the financial responsibility of the applicant teacher. SCORING: The DEA Standard of Achievement of composite scores takes the sum of the individual Judges score, each giving up to 100 points and resulting in the following award categories: AWARD JUDGE 3 JUDGE COMPOSITE Platinum 95.0 to 100 285.0 to 300 Points High Gold 92.0 to 94.9 276.0 to 284.9 Points Gold 88.0 to 91.9 264.0 to 275.9 Points High Silver 80.0 to 87.9 240.0 to 263.9 Points Silver All ties will be broken by the judges. 79.9 & below 239.9 Points & Below AWARDS: To receive a 1 st place the routine must have been awarded a High Gold or Platinum Medal. Pre Competitive and Semi-Professional Levels and Pre Small Fry, Extended/Senior and Adult Age Categories routines are not eligible for Cash Awards, DEA Dollars, Scholarships, and/or High Score Awards. TROPHY, PLAQUE, MEDAL, AND PIN: Solos: Routine will be awarded a Medal and Pin. The Top 5 Scores in an Age Category, Entry Type will be awarded a Plaque. Duo, Trio, Group & Line: Routine will receive one Medal and each participant a Pin. The Top 5 Scores in each Age Category, Entry Type have the option to receive a Plaque or to donate the cost of the Plaque to the DEA SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Production: Routine will receive one Medal for the routine and each participant a Pin. The Top 5 Scores in 12 & Under and 13 and Over Age Category have the option to receive a Plaques or to donate the cost of the Plaque to the DEA SCHOLARSHIP FUND. The Overall Highest Scoring Solo, Duo or Trio regardless of Age Category, Entry Type will be awarded the High Score Award Trophy. The Overall Highest Scoring Group, Line or Production regardless of Age Category, Entry Type will be awarded the High Score Award Trophy. DEA DOLLARS: DEA Dollars will be awarded to the winning routine teachers. These DEA Dollars must be used for the competition fees at one of the Nationals. The will expire on May 31, 2016.. Dancers may compete in more than one Regional City, but a routine that wins DEA Dollars may not compete again at another Regional Competition and win the same DEA Dollars. There must be at least 5 entries in the Age Category to receive the DEA Dollars. To receive first place you must have scored a High Gold or Platinum. A routine can only win DEA Dollars once; the routine with the next highest score that has not received DEA Dollars will be awarded the DEA Dollars. The Overall Highest Score Group/Line per Age Category will receive $125.00 in DEA Dollars. The Overall Highest Score Production 12 And Under" & "13 And Over" will receive $125.00 in DEA Dollars. The Overall Highest Scoring Solo, Duo or Trio regardless of Age Category, Entry Type will receive $250.00 in DEA Dollars. The Overall Highest Scoring Group, Line or Production regardless of Age Category, Entry Type will receive $250.00 in DEA Dollars. NATIONAL WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIPS: There must be at least 5 entries in the category for a National Workshop Scholarship to be awarded. To receive a National Workshop Scholarship, the routine must have scored a High Gold or Platinum Award. Only one National Scholarship may be won by a student at an event. Students using DEA s 2 nd Workshop Free offer for their Convention Registration may not win a National Workshop Scholarships at that Regional. The National Workshop Scholarship is valid for the 2016 National Convention and the recipient is register for the a 2016 National Convention and at the host hotel by May 31, 2016. The Scholarship is non-transferable to any other event or student; and may not be exchanged for any cash value. A copy of the scholarship certificate should be retained for verification if needed. Duplicates will not be reissued. The Overall Highest Score Solo (High Gold or Platinum) in each Age Category will receive a National Workshop Scholarship. The Overall Highest Score Duo (High Gold or Platinum) in each Age Category will receive a National Workshop Scholarship. The Overall Highest Score Trio (High Gold or Platinum) in each Age Category will Page 5 of 6

receive a National Workshop Scholarship. INTENSIVE SCHOLARSHIP: The $500.00 Intensive Scholarship is awarded by audition at all Regional Convention and Competition. Students that audition must be registered for that Regional Convention. Junior Intensive Student must be 9 years of age and not older than 12 years of age as of January 1, 2016. Musical Theatre/Dance Intensive Student must be 13 years of age and not older than 19 years of age as of January 1, 2016. GENERAL INFO: All participants give permission for any photograph or video taken by Dance Educators of America, Inc. or the Video Group selected by DEA to be used in its promotions. This includes newspaper, brochures, ads, television, sales video, the internet, newsletters and any other form of marketing on behalf of Dance Educators of America, Inc. All performance music must be picked up at the event. Any uncollected materials will not be returned.
