Bexar County Flood Control Program 10 year, $500 Million Capital Improvement Program In year 8 of 10, with numerous projects heading into construction phase. The Hill Country is known as flash flood alley, with 1,000 ft. elevation drop across Bexar County. Flood Control program works with local municipalities and agencies to deliver projects that alleviate flooding across the region. Half of all flood deaths occur in vehicles. Turn around, don t drown!

Project Overview Construction cost: $4.45M Design Consultant: San Antonio Design Group, Inc. (SADG) Eliminating low water crossing on Jung Rd, near Stahl Rd. Eliminating low water crossing on Classen Rd., between Briarcrest St. and Stahl Rd. Enhancing drainage off of Briarcrest St., between Jung Rd. and Classen Rd. Drainage channel improvements at new culvert crossings and along Briarcrest St. Bexar County Flood Control working with City of San Antonio Transportation and Capital Improvements (TCI) department.

Project Benefits Allows for unflooded vehicular travel across Salado Creek Tributary during storm events up to the 100 year (1% annual chance) storm event. Allows emergency responders to safely travel across the Tributary during storm events, improving response times. Eliminates the need for barricades and lengthy detour routes during storm events. Alleviates water ponding on Briarcrest St. In conjunction with the City, the project adds dedicated left turn lane for northbound traffic on Classen Rd. to turn left onto Briarcrest St., improving safety and traffic flow at the intersection.

Existing low water crossing at Jung Rd. regularly experiences flooding during storm events. New culvert bridge will allow 100 year (1% annual chance) storm event to cross under roadway. Flood study shows that 4.4 ft. of water will top the existing roadway during the 100 year (1%) storm. Less than 6 of water can sweep people off their feet and wash cars downstream. Photos from May 25, 2013 which was a 5 year (25%) to 25 year (4%) storm.

Existing low water crossing at Classen Rd regularly experiences flooding during storm events. New culvert bridge will allow 100 year (1% annual chance) storm event to cross under roadway. Flood study shows that 4.1 ft. of water will top the existing roadway during the 100 year storm. Photo from May 25, 2013 which was a 5 to 25 year storm.

Typical view along Briarcrest St., between Jung Rd. and Classen Rd, where water accumulates along roadway. Drainage channel on the north side of Briarcrest St., near Briarledge St., drains directly onto the street.
