Descrpton of SL Seres Jack Tool Assembly 1901551-1 The tool assembly conssts of a sprng--loaded ram drven by a handle through a lnk. The ram, whch also acts as a handle lock (to keep the handle closed durng transportaton and storage), can move ndependently of the lnk for purposes of cable strppng and to unlock the handle. A sprng provdes the force necessary for the cable strppng operaton. A blade to place a score mark on fol covered cable par. All the parts are located nsde two housng shells. The housng features a scale for determnng strp length and an access hole for cable strppng. The tool assembly also provdes a means to store and retan Lacng Fxture 1673956--1 when the fxture s not n use. SL Jack Tool Kt 1725150- [ ] 2.2. Descrpton of Lacng Fxture Assembly The lacng fxture s only used on SL Seres 110 Jack Connectors. Reference Pont Cable Strp Hole Ram 9. Remove the cut cable jacket, rp cord, bnder, and cross web fller f they exst, leavng only the twsted pars of wre. See Fgure 5. Each Lacng Fxture Assembly 1673956--1 conssts of two wre lacng gudes that pvot around a pn. Refer to Fgure 2. Each wre lacng gude has a cut--off blade, to cut off the excess wre durng termnaton. In addton, Lacng Fxture1673956--1 contans a ball detent to assst n keepng the lacng fxture closed whle lacng the conductors. The fxture also contans a movable cable clamp, whchsusedtopreventcable movement durng the wre lacng process. Fgure 3 5. Pull the ram completely forward and nsert the cable through the strp hole untl the reference pont meets the outsde surface of the tool. See Fgure 4. Fgure 5 If the cable s partally scored, bendng the cable at the pont of the cut and pullng t away from the cable wll remove the cable jacket. 10. Open the lacng fxture and nsert the cable untl the cable jacket s algned wth the shelf. See Fgure 6. Algn Cable Jacket Wth Shelf 3. TERMINATION PROCEDURE FOR SL SERIES 110 JACK CONNECTORS 3.1. Termnatng Unshelded Cable 1. Prepare the tool by pullng the ram toward the lacng fxture, unlockng the handle. Lft the handle up and remove the lacng fxture. Pull the ram forward and return the handle to the locked poston. 2. Place the stran relef on the cable wth the crcular boss facng away from the end of the cable to be termnated. Refer to Fgure 13. 3. Place the cable next to the scale on the sde of the tool. Stop the end of the cable at the mark below the desred strp length (ndcated n mm). Refer to Fgure 3. A 35mm [1.378 n.] strp length s a good startng pont. 4. Grasp the cable at the end of the tool. That s consdered the reference pont for the scale. Fgure 4 6. Release the ram. The sprng wll provde the force for the cable strppng operaton. 7. Rotate the tool around the cable. Approxmately one and 1/4 turns are normally suffcent to cut through the cable jacket. Harder cable jackets may requre addtonal turns. An arrow next to the cable strp hole ndcates the drecton of rotaton for dfferent depth cuts. Rotatng the tool n the drecton of the smaller arrow wll provde a mnmal cut; rotatng the tool n the drecton of the larger arrow wll provde a deeper cut. It s recommended that the mnmum depth be cut frst. If a deeper cut s requred, rotate the tool n the drecton on the larger arrow. 8. Pull the ram forward and remove the cable. Fgure 6 11.Rotate the cable so that the pars of wres are orented approxmately wth the wrng label on the outsde of the lacng fxture. The blue and brown wres can be used as gudes. When usng color code standards T568A or T568B, these conductors are n the same locaton. 12. Close the lacng fxture around the cable. Lacng fxture 1673956--1 contans a ball detent to keep the fxture closed. Ths fxture should be held by the cable clamp and by the bottom to keep the the cable from movng durng wre lacng. Refer to Fgure 7. 13. Followng the wre dentfcaton label, use the nsde towers between the the wre postonng slots to begn to separate the wre pars. Hold Lacng Fxture Here If the jack connector s equpped wth a dust cover, the cover must be opened pror to nserton nto the tool. See Fgure 10. If the jack connector s termnated wth the cover closed, the connector wll be damaged and must be dscarded. Fgure 12 Hold Lacng Fxture Here Place Wres In Slots Fgure 7 14. Orent the jack connector so that the color codng on the jack connector mates wth proper conductor of lacng fxture. Insert a jack connector nto the lacng fxture untl t s engaged by approxmately 4mm [.160 n.]. See Fgure 8. The blue and brown wres can be used as gudes. When usng color code standards T568A or T568B, these conductors are n the same locaton. Fgure 8 15. Insert the lacng fxture (wth the jack connector) nto the tool. SeeFgure9. Fgure 9 Fgure 10 Dust Cover Open 16. When usng the lacng fxture and plastc SL Jack Connectors, squeeze the tool handle untl the hook on the bottom of the handle meets the top of the ram. See Fgure 11. Then release the handle and remove the lacng fxture and connector. Fgure 11 17. If necessary, remove the cut wres from the lacng fxture and dscard them. 18. Remove the jack connector from the lacng fxture as follows: a. Hold the lacng fxture frmly wth one hand and the jack connector wth the other hand. b. Slghtly move (wggle) the connector back and forth whle pullng n opposte drectons. See Fgure 12. Be sure not to hold the lacng fxture by the cable clamp. Holdng the cable clamp wll provde addtonal force on the cable and make t dffcult to release the jack connector. 19. Open the lacng fxture and remove t from the cable and properly termnated jack connector. Inspect the connector to ensure the wres are bottomed n the housng slots and the wres were cut properly. 20. For unshelded jack connectors, poston the stran relef over the connector and snap nto place. Refer to Fgure 13. Crcular Boss Fgure 13 21. If no further termnatons are requred, place the lacng fxture n the tool and lock the handle n the closed poston. The lacng fxture wll be retaned by the tool. Damaged product should not be used. If a damaged product s evdent, t should be cut from the cable and replaced wth a new one. 3.2. Termnatng Shelded Cable 1. Strp back the cable jacket approxmately 76.2mm [3.00 n.]. It s recommended that the mnmum depth be cut frst. If a deeper cut s requred, rotate the tool n the drecton of the larger arrow (Fgure 14). If the cable s partally scored, bendng the cable at the pont of the cut and pullng t away from the cable wll remove the cable jacket. Tyco Electroncs Corporaton 3 of 6

Fgure 22 11.Pnch the top and bottom of the sheld whle smultaneously pnchng the sdes of the sheld. See Fgure 23. 4. Remove the clear wrappng from the twsted--par wres. Refer to Fgure 17. Fgure 16 8. After removng the connector from the cable and nspectng t, place the fol so that the conductve sde s facng outward and the fol s over the twsted par conductors for 360. Pull the fol toward the jack, form fol around twsted conductors then fold back toward the cable jacket. See Fgure 20 and Fgure 21. Inspect the jack to ensure the wres are bottomed n the housng slots and the wres were cut properly. Fgure 23 12. The top and bottom of the sheld should be on the nsde of the tabs on the left and rght sdes of the sheld.
