(The key can not be pulled out when t s the on poston.) 3) Turn the rotaton drecton knob to the desred poston (forward or reverse). 4) Press the ON button to begn operaton (Fg -). 5) When changng the drecton of rotaton, check frst that the machne has completely stopped movng. Turn the drecton knob to the desred drecton and press the ON button to restart the lathe. 6) Before leavng the machne unattended, press the OFF button and make sure the machne has completely stopped movng. Turn the power off by turnng the key to the left. Ths key must NOT be left nserted n the machne. It s mportant that the key s kept on the machne user or out of reach of unauthorzed users (such as chldren) when the machne s not n use. Please avod use by any unauthorzed users. (Use Stop L-3 Normal utmost cauton n the storage of ths key.) Fnally, be sure to unplug the machne before leavng t unattended. Reverse. Man Spndle Speed () Adjustng the Speed The ML-360 s capable of 6 spndle speeds (Fg. 3-). Poston A s for hgh speeds and poston B s for low speeds. To reposton the belt (K-), stop the man spndle and open the pulley guard. Loosen bolt () whch s to the rght of the counter pulley (b) so that the tenson pulley () can be manually adjusted between postons A and B (Fg. 3-). Then place tenson pulley () n a poston between A A B, and set the belt from the man spndle pulley (c) to the motor pulley for the speed desred. *For hgh speeds, the bolt runs from man spndle pulley (c) to motor pulley (a); for low speeds, the bolt runs from man spndle pulley (c) to counter pulley (b). Dagram 3- shows the settng for low speed (B) usage. When the belt s set on the pulleys, tghten bolt (). Then move the tenson pulley () to poston A f usng hgh speeds, or to poston B f usng low speeds. 9 () Selectng the Proper Man Spndle Speed The man spndle speed s determned by the workpece materal and dameter. Nonferrous metals, such as alumnum or brass, are machned at hgher speeds than ferrous metals, such as steel or cast ron. Smaller dameters requre hgher speeds. If the motor should stall, or the belt come loose durng operaton, turn the machne off mmedately. Move the tool away from the workpece before resumng machnng wth a more shallow cut. (3) Workpece and Man Spndle rpm Man Spndle rpm s determned by the cuttng speed of the tool pont. Ths s calculated by how many nches per mnute the tool cuts nto the workpece. Man spndle rpm N = 36 V / n D t: p = 3.4 V : cuttng speed (n/mn.) D : dameter of workpece (n) N Man spndle rpm For Example: For an alumnum alloy materal wth a dameter of 3/4n (cuttng speed 55yd/mn.), the man spndle rpm s calculated as follows: N = 36x55 = 980 / x 3/4 840 (rpm) Spndle Speeds Number of revoluton per mnute. C-l C- C-3 0- D- A B Reference Fgures are gven n Table 4-. Carrage Handwheel (g) feeds the carrage longtudnally. Handwheel (a) feeds the cross slde across the bed. Screw (c) s used to adjust the tghtness of the cross slde gb strp. Bolt (d) locks the cross slde, and bolt (e) locks the carrage to the lathe bed (Fg 5, 6). -4- (5)

4. Talstock To slde the tals to ck along the lathe bed ways longtudnally, loosen bolt (h). peed the talstock spndle wth handwheel (), and lock the talstock spndle by tghtenng bolt (k). A dead center, lve center, or drll chuck can be ftted to the talstock spndle. Before fttng these accessores, t s essental that the tapered arbor of the accessory and the nternal taper n the talstock spndle are absolutely clean and free of grease. (6) Feed the talstock spndle forward by rotatng the talstock spndle feed handwheel (). Frmly push n the accessory. The accessory s automatcally ejected when the spndle s retracted to ts fullest extent. The spndle and handwheel calbraton (j) s a useful reference for drllng and smlar operatons n the lathe (Fg 6). 5. Handwheel Calbraton Each handwheels has a calbrated cone (I) whch can be re-set zero as a reference. After takng a roughng cut, determne the remanng depth of cut requred to fnsh the workpece. Set the calbrated cone (I) to the zero poston whle holdng the handwheel (a) so t does not move (Fg 7). Ths makes t easy to keep track of how much has been removed from the workpece and how much more needs to be cut. (7) One revoluton of the handwheel s equvalent to.050 n. feed. The short graduatons are each.00 n. and the long graduatons each represent.005 n. -5-

[] «Holdng the Workpccc» There are several ways of holdng the workpece, dependng upon ts shape and sze. As a general rule, the workpece s held wth a chuck. Longer peces can be held between man spndle and talstock spndle centers. Irregular shapes can be secured to the face plate. For extreme accuracy or repettve cuttng of small parts, the collet chuck s recommended.. Holdng Wth a Chuck The followng types of chucks are avalable for your ML jaw Unversal Chuck -4-jaw Independent Chuck -Collet Chuck () 3-jaw Unversal Chuck (No.350) The jaws of the 3-jaw unversal chuck are opend and closed by turnng the chuck key (Photo 8). The jaws move smultaneously and center the workpece automatcally as they close. Please refer to Fgures 9 and 0 for the recommended dmensons of round or hexagonal workpece to be held n the 3-jaw chuck. [jpt r ].36"*.574"0 0.55'* *In the nterest of safety, the recommended chuck capacty should not be exceeded. Normal Jaw (9) A. Fttng the Jaws a) Normal Jaw Fnng Turnng the chuck key clockwse wll cause the scroll n the chuck to rotate counterclockwse. Wth the jaws removed, turn the.377"* key untl the end of the scroll thread appears n jaw slot No.l. - Then turn back slghtly and nsert jaw so that the jaw comes n contact wth the scroll. Turn the key farther clockwse to engage jaw wth the scroll thread. Next, the end of the scroll Reversed Jaw thread wll appear n jaw slot No.3. Follow the same procedures (0) to ft jaws and 3. It s mportant to nsert the jaws n order from to 3, so as to make the jaws meet evenly at the center. -6-

b) Reversed Jaw Fnng Wth all jaws removed from the chuck, follow the same procedure as normal jaw fttng to ft the set of reversed jaws n order from to 3 (Fg. ). Scroll cut c () 4-Jaw Independent Chuck (No.350) () The 4-Jaw ndependent chuck s used to grp round, square, rectangular, or rregularly shaped workpeces. Recommended maxmum workpece dmensons are gven n Fgures and 3. In the nterest of safety, these dmensons should not be exceeded. Each of the 4 jaws s operated ndependently. Therefore, the jaws do not automatcally center the workpece. A. Jaw Reversng Remove the jaws wth the chuck key provded, and reft the reversed jaws onto the chuck. There s no specfc order n 0.669" * whch the reversed jaws must be attached. B. Centerng the Workpece To hold the workpece wth the 4-Jaw ndependent chuck, the 4 jaws must each be brought nto poston and tghtened evenly. A surface gauge or cuttng tool ftted to the tool post s convenent reference for ths procedure. Normal Jaw () a) Centerng ) Open the jaws wth the chuck key and hold the workpece n approxmately the correct poston. Adjust two opposte jaws to grp the work lghtly ' * Reversed Jaw (3) -7-

) Close the other jaws alternately to grp the workpece as unformly as possble. Surface gauge 3) For fnal centerng, set a surface gauge (Photo 4) or cuttng tool tp (Photo 5) close to a reference mark on the face of the workpece. 4)Rotate the check and workpece by hand to check the reference mark. When the fnal poston s determned, tghten the jaws evenly. (3) Fttng and Removng the Chuck A. Fttng the Chuck ) Clean the end of the man spndle and back of the chuck thoroughly. ) Place the chuck on the end of the man spndle wth the shoulder on the man spndle seated evenly n the undercut on the back of the chuck. 3) Insert the socket head bolts and tghten them evenly to secure the chuck (Photo 6). 4) When fttng the 4-jaw ndependent chuck, tghten the four bolts evenly n dagonal order. B. Removng the Chuck To remove the chuck, reverse the "fttng" procedure. Place a safety plate of plywood or some soft materal on the lathe bed to protect t n case the chuck s accdentally dropped(photo 6). (4) Collet Chuck (No.3509) A collet s used to grp small dameter workpece wth great accuracy. The Collet sets (No.3530) ncludes standard round collet szes: /8, 3/6,/4, 5/6,3/8, and /". It also ncludes a ff tt t t f f ff blank collet whch you may fnsh to any requred sze (Photo 7). -8-

A. Fnng the Collet Chuck The collet chuck s ftted to the end of the man spndle and conssts of a collet holder, a collet nut, and nterchangeable collets. A dal gauge, or ndcator, s requred for centerng the collet chuck. a) Fttng the Collet Chuck ) Ft the collet holder to the end of the man spndle by lghtly screwng n the Allen socket head bolts (Photo 9). ) Use the dal gauge on the outsde of the collet holder to center t. When the collet holder s properly centered, tghten the socket head bolts frmly (Photo 0). 3) Insert the requred collet nto the collet holder (Photo ). 4) Screw n the collet nut just enough to prevent the collet from rattlng around (Photo ). Do not tghten the collet chuck wthout a workpece n t, as ths wll cause the collet to be dstorted. -9-

B. Holdng the Workpece Insert the workpece nto the collet. Insert one of the lockng bars nto the hole n the collet holder, and the other bar n the hole n the collet nut. Turn the bar n the holder counter clockwse and the bar n the nut clockwse to tghten.. Holdng wth Centers When machnng a long workpece, t s best to mount t between centers n the man spndle and talstock spndle. The tps of the center have a 60 concal shape. () Talstock Spndle Dead Center (No.3505) The dead center fts nto the nternal taper of the talstock spndle. When the workpece s rotatng, t s mportant to keep the tp of the center and the center hole of the workpece lubrcated constantly to avod overheatng due to frcton (Photo 3). () Man Spndle Dead Center (No.3505) Dead center No also fts the nternal taper of the man spndle. When the dead center s used n the man spndle, t dose not have to be lubrcated, because t rotates wht the workpece. (3) Lve Center (No.3507) The lve center fts nto the nternal taper of the talstock spndle. The tp of the lve center rotates wth the workpece on two ball bearngs. Ths elmnates frcton between the workpece and the center and makes lubrcaton unnecessary (Photo 4). -0-

(4) Fttng the Centers It s mportant to keep the external tapers of the centers and the nternal tapers of the spndles clean and free of grease. Wpe all contactng surfaces to clear them of chps, drt, and lubrcants. A. Fttng a Tal Spndle Center Sngle center machnng s the process of machnng a workpece whch s held between the chuck on the man spndle and a lve or dead center on the talstock spndle. The end of the workpece that s held by a center must be center drlled. B. Fttng Two Centers Machnng between two centers s the process of machnng when the workpece s mounted between one center on the man spndle and another on the talstock spndle. For ths process, the workpece must have been center drlled on both ends. a) Fttng the Centers ) Clean the nternal taper of the man and talstock spndles thoroughly. ) Ft the dead center nto the man spndle. Loosen the screws (g) and set the worm shaft assembly (A) to the sde you prefer. *It s mportant to adjust the backlash of the man spndle worm wheel before tghtenng the worm shaft assembly wth screws (9) * Backlash adjustment s an ndspensable part of operatng the crcular dvdng table. The way the worm meshes wth the worm wheel s changed by a sngle turn of the worm shaft assembly (a). Wth two fngers, turn the worm shaft assembly untl the wheel and assembly mesh lghtly. Then secure t n poston wth the screw (g) (Fg. 5). 3) Select the approprate dvdng plate for the requred dvson (refer to Table ) and ft as follows VVorm wheel HIS)

Remove the thumb nut () and n order, pull out the crank (f), spacer A (j), wave washer (k), spacer B (I), sector B (m), and sector A (n). Remove the flat head screws that hold the dvdng plate to the worm shaft shoulder and change the dvdng plate. Adjust the space between the stems of the sectors (explaned on Page 40) and re-attach the fttngs n the reverse order to whch they were removed (Fg. 6). 3) Next we wll prepare for the actual dvdng operaton. The example gven below llustrates how to obtan 5 dvsons. nt) Wth crank revoluton n and dvson N, and the worm gear rate at /40, the relatonshp between n and N can be expressed as ' n = 40/N () Usng formula (), f the dvson s 5, the crank revoluton becomes : n = 40/5 =40/5 () Ths means that the requred crank feed s revolutons and 0 holes of a 5-hole dvdng plate. However, snce there s not a 5-hole plate, the number ( & 0/5) must be recalculated to correspond wth the dvdng plates avalable. The followng are the possble substtutons: A 0/5 = ( A /3) = A 8/7 ( revolutons * 8 holes of a 7-hole plate) A 0/5 = A /33 ( revolutons + holes of a 33-hole plate) A 0/5 = A 4/36 etc... Refer to secton 3 above to ft the 4 A 7 hole plate to the 4 hole crcle -39- Set screw 7- hole crcle 7) Set screw man spndle of the dvdng table (Fg. 7). Loosen the screw on Sector A and poston the sectors so that 9 (8+ ) holes appear between the stems of Sector A and Sector B. Then tghten the screw (Fg. 8). Sector B HID

Don't forget that you must always add an extra hole to the requred number. In ths example, the requred number s 8; the clamp pn at the tp of the crank must be placed n hole number 7 - hole crcle 9 n order for the crank to move 8 spaces. Set the space between Sectors A and B before re-attachng spacer B, the wavy washer, spacer A, the crank, the crank screw, etc, Fnally, set the clamp pn (p) so that t fts nto one of the holes of the 7-hole plate, and tghten the clamp screw () frmly. Ths completes the preparaton for the dvdng operaton (Fg. 9). Crank (MB) 5) Before begnnng the dvdng operaton, loosen the rotaton stopper bolts (r) on the crcular dvdng table (Photo 0). Pull the crank out whle rotatng t, and ft the crank pn nto any hole between the stems of Sector A and Sector B. Turn the unt of Sectors A and B to the rght, and stop when the stem of Sector A touches the crank pn. Ths becomes the startng poston. Whle pullng out, turn the crank revolutons to the rght and stop at the startng hole. Scctor B Feed the crank pn 8 holes (from the above calculaton) to the rght untl the pn comes n contact wth the stem of Sector B. Tghten the rotaton stopper bolts and begn cuttng. To prepare for another dvdng operaton, loosen the rotaton stopper bolts and turn the unt of Sectors A and B to the rght Sector A turnng to the rght untl the stem of Sector A touches the crank pn. Then repeat the whole procedure (Fg. ). feedng n the opposte drecton, pay attenton to the backlash between the worm shaft and the worm wheel. Feed to the left past the necessary pont, and then turn back to the rght to ft the crank pn n the necessary hole. -40-
