Car park ventilation the principle Basics Jet fan systems are active systems offering a cost effective solution to ventilate and extract smoke from enclosed or underground car parks. This ductless ventilation system provides either normal ventilation and can also be provided for smoke extract in case of emergencies, or a combination of both, i.e. a dual purpose fan. n ef cient system re uires good planning, starting with the physical dimensions of the car park, considering the pattern of utilisation as well as peak loads. Ventilation rates are mostly based on an air exchange rate (pollution), or on a rate multiplied with the number of parking spaces. This is de ned in the appropriate local building regulations, de ning normal ventilation and emergency ventilation. The typical system includes the jet fans and main exhaust air fans, eventually supply air fans, should the openings in the building (entrance, ramps etc.) not be suf ciently si ed. n addition, a control system with carbon monoxide detectors and or heat smoke detectors is re uired to operate the system effectively. A jet fan system offers the ventilation on demand principle also for car parks depending on the measurements of the CO detectors. Jet fans can be individually controlled, or grouped together in re ones. n re mode, after a pre-set standstill escape period, the jet fans will run at full speed to uickly and effectively clear the smoke. Bene ts The space saving design, compared to standard duct based ventilation systems, offers a variety of bene ts t is possible to ventilate or extract smoke in particular sections of the car park. CO (carbon monoxide) detectors and smoke sensors ensure that only fans in polluted areas are activated and the fans are switching into smoke extract mode immediately when a re starts. No expensive, bulky and complex duct systems, making it an ideal solution also for renovations. Car park design is more attractive. mproved air uality in underground car parks compared to conventional ducted systems (mixture of all layers of air within the car park). Optimum safety is provided in case of a re in the car park. apid smoke extraction, smoke cooling, limited smoke spread, i.e. a better smoke control. Jet fan systems for smoke extract prevent costly conse uential damages in case of a re the ceilings are subjected to less heat, and smoke is uickly removed from the building. ore exible in positioning when the parking area in the car park is redesigned. Energy saving in exhaust air fans due to reduced system resistance (no duct systems). educed installation and running costs. Control system A control system is re uired, which is tailored to handle the re uirements of the speci c project for ventilating and smoke extraction. As a rule car park ventilation is based on 6ACH for normal ventilation and 10ACH for smoke extract according to international standards. n ndia national building code (N C) ask for 12ACH for normal ventilation and 30ACH for smoke extract. A good control system saves energy by reducing the ventilation rate with the help of CO sensors, depending on the car park usage, increasing ventilation rate only in peak hours and operating the jet fans only selectively, according to demand. When used for smoke extract, the system has to work on a re detection system (heat or smoke detection). n car parks with different levels, the system has to run the jet fans full speed on the re level, and simultaneously switch off the fans in all other levels. The main exhaust air fans are switched to full speed. The control e uipment regulates the main supply and/or exhaust fans together with the jet fans, both depending on the signals coming from the sensors.

Tailored solutions CFD simulation A C simulation is needed to con rm that there is enough air movement in all areas of the car park to secure the re uired number of air exchanges, to con rm the proposed number of jet fans and to determine the location where the jet fans have to be installed. n order to be able to perform a C analysis, it is essential to have a 3-D model of the building site, giving all openings, slab height, surface of the ceiling ( at or with drop beams, etc.) and all other details in 2-D autocad format re uired to carry out a simulation. A CFD analysis is used to simulate the air ows, to ensure that the distribution of the air is suf cient to effectively ventilate the car park under normal conditions as well as in emergency situations. Systemair offers this service meaning everything from one source and rsthand truly tailored solutions. Systemair range Jet fans The Systemair jet fans are e uipped with adjustable aluminium impellers and EC standard motors, available for ambient temperatures for CO exhaust (between 40 C and 60 C) or for high temperature smoke exhaust (300 C/2h) applications. Certi cation in accordance with EN 12101-3. Two speed high temperature fans can also be used for normal CO extract ventilation (dual purpose fans). Three si es (31, 3 and 400 mm impeller diameter), circular or octagonal design. Also available with fully reversible blade settings (on re uest). Fan casings and outside sheet for fan housing manufactured from hot dip galvani ed sheet and silencers manufactured from pre-galvani ed sheet. Pre-wired terminal box manufactured from thermoplast in ambient temperature version, from aluminium in high temperature version. Easy access at the outer fan casing. Silencers with integrated inlet cones and guide vane to straighten the air ow. Sound attenuating material non-in ammable in accordance with D N 4102, corresponding with E guideline 97/69. Protection guards on inlet and outlet, manufactured from galvani ed steel. Mounting brackets manufactured from galvani ed steel, for safe and easy ceiling suspension. De ector/guide vane on the outlet side.(available as an accessary on re uest) Control system With active motor protection in ambient temperature mode, with individual and grouped failure signal. n case of re motor protection is being deactivated. Each fan is controlled by an individual control- and power unit. Possibility to have auto-changeover to a standby fan, should one of the main fans fail. The Systemair control modules and regulation systems correspond to VD guideline 20 3, D N/VDE 0660, D N/ VDE 0100-71 and D N/EN 61140. The concept has been approved by TÜV, the modules are CE-labelled.

Safety requires individual planning CFD simulations CFD simulation Systemair offers assistance in the planning and design of Systemair Jet Fan Systems. Section velocity vectors On re uest and against a fee, which will be reimbursed when ordering the project with Systemair, we can provide CFD (computational uid dynamics) simulations, assisting in selecting the number, si e and positioning of the fans, and giving all information re uired for your speci c project.
