History of Jan Kriel School Jan Kriel School came into existence in 1937 due to the unwearied diligence of the Rev. and Mrs Kriel of the Dutch Reformed church in Kuilsrivier. Their beloved son, Jan, suffered from epilepsy and died at the age of 16. 3. Vision of Jan Kriel School That each learner with his/her unique educational need will achieve his/her full potential and grow towards maturity, in order to become an independent and valuable member of society. 4. Mission of Jan Kriel School To use specialized and individualized structures to educate and support each learner with special educational needs (especially the learner with a specific learning disability and/or epilepsy) to grow spiritually, intellectually and socially in realizing his/her full potential. 5. Language medium As a double medium school we strive to unite English and Afrikaans speaking learners in a close community where the language and culture of both groups are respected and promoted. 6. Parents pay a fee at the beginning of the year. Intermediate Phase: Parents pay a fee at the beginning of the year for notes and worksheets. High School: The first set of exercise books is supplied free of charge. Parents buy the prescribed text books from the school s book supplier. At the beginning of the year parents pay a fee for additional notes. Homework Books The homework books help parents and learners to know which homework is assigned for the following day. Homework books may also be used for messages between parents and educators. Learners in the High School buy the homework book provided by the school. Intermediate Phase: Supply own homework books Foundation Phase: Homework books are supplied to learners. 8 Extra-mural Activities

8.1 Sport Participation in sport is compulsory as it forms part of the school day. It is the parents responsibility to inform the school in writing if a learner has to be exempted from participating in sport. A medical certificate must be presented. Coaching takes place on Mondays and Thursdays between 13:00 and 14:15. The following sports are offered: Summer: Athletics, Cricket, Tug-of-war Winter: Rugby, Netball, Soccer, Volleyball Throughout the year: Badminton, Tennis, Tabletennis, Chess, Cross-country, Aerobic exercises, Dancing, Golf Sport for the disabled: Athletics, Swimming, Tabletennis, Slalom, and Cycling 8.2 Cultural Activities During a cultural period once a week activities such as choir, debate, drama, quiz competitions, talent shows and material painting are offered to high school learners. The needs of the learners are determined from time to time and programmes are adjusted accordingly. 8.3 Religious Activities Uniting Christian Students Association of SA physiotherapists form part of the multi-disciplinary team. Besides assessments, team discussions, group work and some individual work, the therapists provide therapeutic intervention within the class situation in close co-operation with the educators. 9.2 Medical staff assist learners who are in need of medical care, help to monitor the regular use and effectiveness of medication, liaise with medical professionals and parents and form part of the multi-disciplinary team. 9.3 The psychologists handle all admissions and discharges; assess learners by means of standardized tests, counsel learners and their parents regarding personal problems, subject choices, job opportunities and study methods and co-ordinate the functioning of the multi-disciplinary team. Learners are allocated to the psychologists according to the first letter of their surnames. 9.4 The Orthodidactical staff train learners in the use of audio learning as a study aid, prepare sound tracks of study material which are downloaded onto learners MP3 players and co-ordinate amanuensis (transcription) offered to specific learners who have serious difficulty in communicating their knowledge in writing. 9.5 The social worker is also part of the multi-disciplinary team. 9 Support Services 9.1 Occupational therapists, speech therapists and 10 Important information for parents

Enquiries should be directed to Mr M Burger or Mrs H Faasen. 10.4 The code of conduct of Jan Kriel School, the drug and alcohol policy, the policy on recovering of debts, as well as the school and hostel rules, are handed to the learner and his/her parent(s) on admission. These guidelines and rules should be studied and carried out. 10.5 School and hostel fees are payable strictly in advance, per month, term or year. Bus fees are payable in advance on a monthly basis. Arrange for debit orders by contacting Mrs T van Heerden. Cheques and postal orders should be made out to: Jan Kriel School 10.6 Learners may keep cell phones and MP3 players in a locker (R100). Learners must preferably not bring items of value to school. Learners from Grade 1 to Grade 3 may wear their track

suites in winter. Blazer compulsory for grade 10 12. 11.4 Boys : Summer uniform Grey short or long trousers with grey or black belt. White short-sleeved shirt. Dark blue V-neck jersey, dark blue blazer or windbreaker if preferred. Black lace-up school shoes. No boots, buckled shoes or casual sport shoes. Grey school socks. Learners from grade R to Grade 3 may come to school barefoot in summer. Boys: Winter uniform Grey short or long trousers with grey or black belt. White long-sleeved shirt with dark blue school tie. Grey school socks. Black lace-up shoes. Dark blue V-neck jersey, dark blue blazer or windbreaker. Learners from Grade R to Grade 3 may wear their track suites to school in winter. Dark blue blazer compulsory for grade 10 12. 12. Hostels Jan Kriel School offers residential facilities to learners in the Western Cape who do not live in the proximity of another ELSEN school and who are not able to make use of our daily commuting service. Each residence functions under the control of a guardian. Twenty four hour supervision is managed by hostel staff and educators. Residents have a central self-service dining hall at their disposal. The boys are housed in different residences according to age. There is one residence for girls. The admission of learners younger than ten years of age is not encouraged. There are two study sessions per day. Younger learners are assisted by educators who render help where needed and supervise the completion of homework. Learners go home over weekends, or go to family or friends, with required permission from their parents or guardian. Washing may be done at a private laundry on the premises. 11.5 Sports wear When a learner enters for a specific sport, particulars will be supplied to the learner and his/her parents. Senior Supervision: Mrs. Fasten, mrs Bezuidenhout en mr R Lötter 13. Application for Admission Application for admission is handled by the learner s present school and the school clinic in the area. The completed application form, with documentation and recommendations by the responsible school psychologist at the clinic, is then submitted to the ELSEN-specialist at the local EMDC (Educational Management and Development Centre) who will send it to the Director of Specialised Education Services at the Western Cape Education Department for approval. The application is then forwarded to Jan Kriel School via the Kuilsrivier School Clinic for final consideration and placement, provided that accommodation is available.
