1 SCHOOL UNIFORM This document gives advice and recommendations on appropriate clothing and footwear to be worn at Calder High School Everybody, Everyday Calder High School The Calder Learning Trust

2 School Uniform We have a uniform. Uniform means exactly that one form of a dress code. Fashion adaptations of the very clear guidelines shown below are not acceptable. Please help us to set and maintain high standards for school uniform. We are delighted to note the smart appearance of our students and the fact that we have been able to provide a jumper that is more comfortable for our students to wear. KS3 and KS4 (Year 7 / 8 / 9 / 10 /11) White school shirt with pointed collar Black knee-length school skirt Black tailored school trousers Hijab (plain black) Plain black leather or leather-effect shoes with plain black shoe laces. KS3 (Year 7/8/9) Royal blue jumper, with school badge. Silver/royal blue tie. A tie with velcro fastener can be purchased in school.

3 KS4 (Year 10/11) Black jumper/cardigan, with school badge. Black/royal blue tie. A tie with velcro fastener can be purchased in school. PE Kit Calder High T-shirt. Calder High navy blue shorts. Navy and royal blue hooped football socks. Rugby shirt for boys. (optional) Calder High Hoody and tracksuit pants. (optional) Imitations of the regulation uniform and PE kit often disappoint parents in terms of reliability and length of life and, so, end up being more expensive. Dance Plain T shirt and leggings

4 Wearing our uniform The school tie is worn at the conventional length reaching the band of trousers/skirt/shirt button above the waistband. If a student does not wear the tie as required, s/he will be asked to buy a velcro-fastening tie. The school shirt is worn tucked in with the top button fastened. Students wear the school jumper at all times around school, in assemblies and in lessons. In hot weather, school will declare no jumper days as shown above. Underwear, including bras and T shirts, should not be visible under the school shirt by being a different colour from the shirt. School Uniform Suppliers All items of our school uniform items are available from:- Shaw Hardcastle, 3 Old Market,, HX1 1TJ Items such as the white shirt, black skirt and black trousers may be sourced more economically from local superstores, but please make sure that appropriate schoolwear is purchased and not fashion equivalents. For example, for girls, a white school shirt is part of our uniform, a white blouse with rounded collar isn t. Please make sure all items of school uniform have your child s name on them.

5 Shoes: Conventional all-black leather or imitation leather school shoes. This means: No boots* or backless shoes, no open-toed sandals, no trainers, no fabric shoes, no platforms, no flip-flops, no high heels, no coloured embroidery or decoration, no coloured shoelaces, no white or coloured stripes, flashes or other colouring on any part of the sole or shoe. All footwear must also be safe and suitable for school. Please see examples and suppliers of appropriate footwear on the next few pages. *Appropriate boots may be worn under trousers between November and March during adverse weather conditions. Black School Skirt: This should be a respectable and sensible length, approximately knee length. Very short, long or tight skirts are not acceptable. Tights and Socks: Plain black tights only of 40 denier minimum (no patterns). Footless tights are not acceptable. Black ankle socks or knee socks (up to the knee) may be worn with a skirt. Black socks should be worn with trousers. Black School Trousers (tailored): These should be plain black. Tight fitting, ski type trousers, combats, all varieties of leggings, jeans and wide-bottomed flares are not acceptable. Trousers with rivets are not acceptable. A plain, slim, black belt may be worn, but coloured, wide belt or belts with large buckles should not be worn. Shirt: A traditional school shirt, long-sleeved with pointed collar is worn by both boys and girls. Fitted blouses or shirts with rounded collars are not allowed. Dark Coloured Optional Outer Garment: Plain coat, suitable for wet weather. Outdoor coats are not worn in the building. Make-up is not acceptable. We do not allow nail extensions, false nails, nail varnish in anything other than clear, or eyelash extensions. Jewellery is limited to a watch and one stud in each ear. Health and Safety considerations mean that other items of jewellery including earrings, ear stretchers and tapers are not allowed. (No other facial jewellery is allowed including tongue/nose/eyebrow studs/ bars.) Hair: A plain dark blue or black hair band is suitable for school. Other hair decorations are not allowed. Parents should be aware that we do not permit extremes of fashion in student hairstyles or dress. Added hair colours must be subtle and in a range of natural hair colour and restricted to one colour. If unsure, check with your Year Achievement Leader before making any changes. Hair braiding is only acceptable without beads or accessories. Close shaved heads, i.e. below a number 2 and patterns cut into hair and eyebrows are not acceptable. If a student has shoulder length (or longer) hair, they will be required to tie it back when necessary. We do not allow hair extensions. The school will temporarily confiscate inappropriate items of jewellery and valuables and may contact parents if this becomes an issue.
