1 Coleraine Grammar School Honours and Awards School Honours and Awards exist to recognise and celebrate the achievements of pupils in a wide variety of activities and to encourage pupils to participate and strive f excellence in their particular field. The pupils who achieve these awards have shown sustained, exemplary and exceptional commitment to the ethos and values of the school that promote: the development of talent and ambition the pursuit of excellence respect of self and others quality of opptunity and inclusion courage, determination and inspiration N.B. The following School Honours and Awards Criteria are minimum criteria a pupil s perfmance, loyalty, character, integrity and behaviour will also be taken into account. Honours and Colours must therefe not be regarded as being an automatic award f playing in a first team equivalent, even one that wins a competition. Honours and Colours are awarded at the discretion of the teacher in charge of each club society. Recommendations must be passed by the Awards Committee and ratified by the Seni Management Team. It is recognised that there must be some provision f exceptional circumstances and in such cases the Awards committee will make a judgement based on the recommendation of the teacher in charge of each club society. Exceptional circumstances would, f example, include a situation where a pupil is unable to meet criteria because of illness serious injury. In the event of illness a serious injury a pupil s previous commitment to the club society will also be taken into account. A school club society may be considered f Awards once it has been established within the school/represented the school f a minimum period of two years. School Honours and Awards criteria exist to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our pupils. Any recommendations f changes to the standards of the Awards criteria will be guided by this principle. Changes proposed by the Awards Committee will be subsequently ratified by the Seni Management Team. The Awards Committee will nmally meet in the 2 nd last week of the Spring and Summer terms so that awards can be ratified by SMT befe presentation in the last week of term.
2 SCHOOL HONOURS AND COLOURS AWARDS CRITERIA Award Definition Minimum Criteria Juni Colours Years 9 to 11 The Award of Juni Colours recognises those pupils who have given sustained commitment (minimum two years) to a school spt, activity club achieved significant success at inter-school provincial level. They may also be awarded to pupils in Years 10 and 11 who meet the criteria f Seni Honours/Colours. Pupils who have participated in a school spt, activity club may attain Juni Colours (Participation) award. The Juni badge (only) is wn by those pupils who receive Juni colours f Participation. Pupils who have participated and achieved in a school spt, activity club may attain Juni Colours (Achievement) award. The school crested red tie (with stripe) and Juni badge are to be wn by those pupils who receive Juni colours f Participation and Achievement. The recipient of a Juni Colours Award MUST fulfil the following criteria: 1. have displayed a positive and exemplary attitude towards the spt/activity, team members, coaches and staff at all times. 2. have demonstrated a high level of ability, commitment and sptsmanship with due regard to comparative standards. 3. have given a sustained commitment (in nmal circumstances a minimum 2 years) and been a regular member of the appropriate Team/Squad/ Club. 4. meet any specific criteria set by the member of staff in charge of the spt/activity and agreed by the Awards Committee. Seni Colours Years 12 to 14 The Award of Seni Colours recognises those pupils who have given sustained commitment to a school spt, activity club and achieved at seni interschool level. Seni Colours may also recognise those pupils who fall sht of the playing standard required but have given a sustained commitment (minimum 2 years) and proved capable in an ganisational/ administrative capacity to a particular Club/Society. The school crested green tie (with stripe) is wn by those who receive Seni colours. The recipient of a Seni Colours Award must fulfil the following criteria: 1. have displayed a positive and exemplary attitude towards the spt, team members, coaches and staff at all time. 2. have demonstrated an exceptionally high level of ability, commitment and sptsmanship with due regard to comparative standards. 3. have given a sustained commitment and been a regular member of the appropriate Team/Squad/ Club. 4. meet any specific criteria set by the member of staff in charge of the spt/activity and agreed by the
3 Honours Years 12 to 14 Seni Team/Age Group only Representative Honours Years 12 to 14 The Award of Honours recognises those pupils who have given sustained commitment beyond the nmal expectations to a school spt, activity club and have achieved success at seni inter-school level. They are nmally awarded to pupils in Years 12-14, and at the earliest at the end of the academic year in Year 12. Honours are also awarded to the Head Boy and Head Girl. The Honours blazer and school crested green tie (with stripe) are wn by those who receive School Honours. Representative Honours is presented to pupils who show outstanding ability in a particular school spt other activity at provincial national level, together with a high degree of sptsmanship in all of his her spting activities. They are nmally awarded to pupils in Years who attain U18/U19 representative standard, and nmally at the earliest at the end of the academic year in Year 12. The Honours blazer and school crested green tie (with stripe) are wn by those who receive Representative Honours, with added designation on Honours blazer badge, e.g. Ulster U18, Ireland U18, NI U18. Awards Committee. The recipient of an Honours Award must fulfil the criteria applicable to Seni Colours as well as the specific criteria set f Honours by the member of staff in charge of the spt/activity/club and agreed by the Awards Committee. As well as meeting the general criteria f Honours, the recipient must have represented their province country successfully in an international spts competition and promoted the School values through his her participation. Given the exceptionally high level of achievement and representation required f a Representative Honours, it is likely that recipients will nmally be in the Seni School. SCHOOL AMBASSADOR AWARD (Juni School Ambassad Yr 8-11 / Seni School Ambassad Yr 12-14) The School Ambassad Award Certificate recognises outstanding ability an exceptional achievement contribution by a pupil in a spt other activity not available in the School. This award is the equivalent of a Special Award and therefe will only be awarded to those whose achievements have a significant and far-reaching impact beyond school. Given the exceptionally high level of achievement spting representation required f an Ambassad Award, it is likely that recipients will nmally be in the Seni School. Nominations f the Juni School Ambassad Award (Years 8-11) and the Seni School Ambassad Award (Years 12-14) should be made, in writing, to the Chair of the Awards Committee.

Activities not listed are covered under minimum criteria. Have individual art wk not related to classroom wk displayed outside school, e.g. external exhibition. Representing the School at Ulster competition level (at least one year as seni pupil as Year 12 pupil in calendar year age categy). Ulster Schools level finalist. Two years on Seni Team (at least one year as seni pupil as Year 12 pupil in calendar year age categy). Represent Bridge Club in interschool s competition f three years (at least one year as seni 1 st XI in at least 75% of all regular season matches (at least one year as Seni pupil) Play in at least one Schools Cup Match. Captain of 2 nd XI. Must be a member of the school seni team. Sustained commitment in leading Juni Art Club (minimum two years). Compete f the school at District level and at inter-school meetings. Must have played on the Juni team in Year 11 and the Seni team in Year 12 ( as Year 12 pupil in calendar year age categy). Success (1 st 2 nd in Intermediate level Novice tournament). Cricket Club (CRICKET) Must have played a significant number of matches f the 1 st XI. Two years on 2 nd XI 3 rd XI. Debating, Public Speaking member of the Debating/Public Success/Placed at Public Achievement: Tie (and Badge) Must have competed at Ulster schools Championships either as an Individual as part of a team. Have individual art wk not related to classroom wk displayed outside school, e.g. external exhibition. Success (1 st 2 nd in Novice tournament). Colts XI f at least 75% of all matches. Cup finalist/ulster representative.
5 Speaking, Bar Mock Trial (DEBATING) Speaking/Bar Mock Trial Club(s) (at least one year as seni pupil) Success at semi-final/final stage of N.I. schools level. Speaking/Debating/Bar Mock Trial at local level. N.I. finalist/n.i. representative. Drama (DRAMA) Equestrian (EQUESTRIAN) Football Club (FOOTBALL) Golf Club (GOLF) Harriers Club (HARRIERS) Hockey (HOCKEY) N.I. U18/U19 Any other U18/U19 International XI Have played a significant leading speaking role in school productions. Have played a very significant behind the scenes role in an aspect of a production. Compete in majity of Inter schools events Must have played in part all of 75% of matches f the Under 16 team (at least one year as Seni Cup finalist/n.i. representative. Outstanding lead perfmance in school production. Cup finalist/n.i. representative. Member of the Seni team. Ulster finalist/ulster representative Development squad. Play 75% of all regular season matches. Must compete at Ulster Intermediate Level ( qualify Irish level). Two years on 2 nd XI 2 nd X1 B Three years in 2 nd XI B A XI in at least 75% of all regular season matches. Played in a least one Cup/Shield match

8 Meetings: Presentation: Appeals: Committee to meet twice yearly f the purpose of discussing and approving awards (nmally befe end of Spring term and befe end of Summer term). The Secretary should give at least 7 days notice of an Awards committee meeting, although it may also be necessary to call ad hoc meetings. Member of the Committee should provide a list of pupils they wish to propose f school awards to the Chair and Secretary in advance of the meeting. A minute will be kept of the decisions of the Committee by the Secretary. Awards will nmally be made, where possible, pri to the Easter and Summer holidays. Recipients will receive written notification and winners will be acknowledged at main assembly in front of the appropriate year groups. An appeal against the application of the award criteria should be made first to the member of staff in charge of spt activity and then by that member of staff to the Chair of the Awards committee, and the Awards Committee re-convened if required.
Colours Cards, indicating the nature of the awards, and signed by the Rector and Deputy Rector will be presented at a School Assembly.
