2 SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY SCHOOL UNIFORM LOWER AND MIDDLE SCHOOL Pupils below the Sixth Form must observe the following code of dress on all School occasions, including sporting fixtures, unless specific instructions are given to the contrary: Uniform Requirements Boys 1. Regulation black blazer with School badge and School tie. 2. White shirt. 3. Ties should have a regulation knot and top buttons should be fastened. 4. Shirts should be sufficiently long in the tails not to come untucked from trousers. 5. Regulation charcoal trousers of worsted woven material only. 6. Black polished shoes in leather or imitation leather. Laces and stitching must be black. Training shoes, suede shoes and boots are not allowed. No coloured flashes, labels or logos. 7. Socks should be plain and of a dark colour. 8. Underwear should not be visible. 9. Regulation V-neck sweater. In the Middle School this can be grey or black. In the Lower School a grey sweater trimmed with the School colours is required. 10. A plain white T-shirt or vest can be worn under the shirt. 11. Hair should be neat and clean. Extreme styles or garishly coloured hair are not allowed. Hair should not touch the shoulders. Hair should not obscure the eyes. 12. No jewellery should be worn. Tattoos, earrings and ear studs are forbidden. Uniform Requirements Girls 1. Regulation tailored blazer with blue lining and School badge. 2. No tie 3. Regulation blouse with revere collar (striped for years 7 & 8, blue Oxford weave for years 9, 10 & 11). All buttons to be fastened. No long tails and no visible midriffs. 4. Regulation School skirt, charcoal grey, knee length. 5. Black sturdy shoes in leather or imitation leather with flat heels. Laces and stitching must be black. Training shoes, suede shoes and boots are not allowed. No coloured flashes, labels or logos. 6. Black plain tights minimum 40 denier. Plain, white ankle socks may be worn as alternative during the Summer term and in the Autumn Term until October half-term. Middle School girls can wear trainer socks as an alternative to white ankle socks. 7. Underwear should not be visible. 8. Regulation V-neck sweater. In the Middle School this can be grey or black. In the Lower School a grey sweater trimmed with the School colours is required. 9. Hair should be neat and clean. Extreme styles or garishly coloured hair are not permitted. If shoulder length or longer, hair may be restrained with ribbon, slides or scrunchies of a subdued style and colour. Hair should not obscure the eyes. 10. The wearing of make-up is not allowed. 11. Nail varnish should not be worn.

3 12. No jewellery should be worn. Matching plain single stud earrings are permitted in pierced ears. Tattoos are forbidden. For reasons of health and safety, no other forms of body piercing jewellery are allowed. Summer Dress Summer dress is announced by the Head normally sometime after the Summer half term. It is an alternative to the school uniform. Pupils can opt to wear Summer Dress. If not then normal uniform regulations should be adhered to. For Boys 1. White shirt. 2. If sleeves are rolled up this must be to the elbows. If not then cuffs should be fastened. 3. Blazer removed and not carried. 4. Top button unfastened. 5. No sweater. 6. No tie. 7. A plain white vest may be worn beneath the shirt. 8. All other regulations remain. For Girls 1. Regulation blouse. 2. If sleeves are rolled up this must be to the elbows. If not then the cuffs should be fastened. 3. Blazer removed and not carried. 4. No sweater. 5. All other regulations remain. The Head of Year will judge if a pupil is inappropriately presented and may, after liaising with the relevant Assistant Head, send a pupil home to return properly dressed. Parents should check with the Head of Year if they have any doubt about the suitability of items of clothing they intend to buy for pupils to wear in School. All clothing should be marked with the owner s name. Coats, hats, scarves and gloves must not be worn around the School. Outdoor coats should be predominantly dark, without logos and should be long enough to cover the blazer. Hooded sweatshirts must not be worn in, to or from school. SIXTH FORM DRESS CODE Sixth Form students are asked to observe the Code of Dress outlined below. The Code offers individual choice to students without giving them complete licence; they need to use their judgement on what is acceptable and to show responsibility in adhering to both the letter and the spirit of the Code. This applies on school premises, when travelling to and from school, attending for examinations or representing the School in any way, such as sports fixtures and concerts. The guiding principles of the Dress Code are that students should dress with smartness and formality appropriate for the workplace, and always tidily and without ostentation. Students should be mindful that at all times and in all places their appearance and conduct contribute to the public perception of the School.

4 1. Clothing should at all times be smart and formal. Gaudy colours and elaborate patterns are not appropriate. 2. All students should wear either a suit or a structured, tailored long sleeved jacket with full-length tailored trousers or, for girls, a formal, knee-length skirt or dress. Jackets should be worn at all times unless in a lesson or when summer dress is announced in hot weather. 3. Boys should wear collared shirts and ties. The shirt should be buttoned at the neck and tucked in, the collar and tie visible at all times. 4. Girls should wear plain tops of a modest length and necklines should be appropriate for the workplace. Shoulders must be covered at all times. 5. Denim, hooded tops, leggings, sportswear, wide/studded belts, logos are all unacceptable at school. Trousers must not have any of the characteristics of jeans. 6. All students should wear plain, practical, sturdy shoes. Boots should be fitted, knee-length only. Backless shoes, trainers and sandals are not appropriate. 7. Students should wear discreet jewellery only. Boys may wear a single sleeper stud ear-ring. Visible body jewellery, apart from ear-rings, is not permitted. 8. Hair should be neat and well-cared for. Where hair is of shoulder length or longer it should be tied back in laboratories and workshops for safety reasons. Hair should have the appearance of being natural. 9. Boys may only wear beards/facial hair for reasons of religious observance, and a written request for permission to do so must first be made by parents to the Head of Year. The School reserves the right to point out errors of judgement and taste: in such matters, the School s decision is final. A student who openly flouts the Dress Code will be sent home to change.

5 Interpreting the Sixth Form Dress Code These notes should help students and parents understand the details of the Dress Code. Boys: i. Jacket should be in the style of a suit jacket; bomber and/or zipped jackets are not permitted. ii. Trousers: chinos are acceptable but any item which has the characteristics of jeans, such as rivets, large labels sewn on the outside of the garment, patch pockets, is not acceptable. Tight-fitting, drainpipe trousers are not permitted. iii. Hawaiian or gaudily patterned shirts are not appropriate. iv. Old-fashioned, woollen jumpers are to be encouraged but sweatshirts may be worn if they are free of logos and lettering; those with collars may not be worn. v. Sportswear items, such as hooded sweatshirts, may not be worn in or to or from school. Boys should not wear Latymer track suit tops. vi. Training shoes, or shoes that have the characteristics of training shoes, are not permitted; shoes should be formal, leather or suede. Girls: i. Girls should be aware that in the interests of equality and fairness, the same high standard of smartness is expected of girls as boys. Girls should not dress in a competitive fashion: they are attending a place of work not a club. They should have separate wardrobes for work and play. ii. Though we do not ask girls to wear blazer and tie, they should dress smartly at all times: tailored skirts of a modest length (not flimsy and/or of stretchy lycra). Mini-skirts are inappropriate for school. Trousers should be formal; jackets must be structured. On some occasions (concerts and open days, for example) they will need to dress in an especially formal manner so plain white top, tailored jacket, black skirt/trousers should be part of each girl s wardrobe. iii. At all times, girls should dress modestly; midriffs should not be displayed (so hipster trousers are not appropriate) and shoulders should be covered (so spaghetti straps are never permitted, irrespective of the weather). iv. Denim and pseudo-denim fabrics are not permitted, either as jackets or trousers or skirts; and tracksuit-style trousers are also outlawed. v. Skinny fit, drainpipe trousers or jean-type trousers are not permitted. vi. Tops: girls may wear blouses and smart tee-shirts, which are plain not gaudily coloured, without lettering or logos and of an appropriate length to ensure modesty. Sportswear of any type is not permitted. vii. Training shoes, or shoes that have the characteristics of training shoes, are not permitted; shoes should be formal in style and colour, leather or suede. No flip-flop sandals, no ballet shoes, and pumps should have hard soles and heels. Ankle boots are not permitted unless worn with trousers. Boots must otherwise be knee-length, plain and close fitting; Ugg boots are not acceptable.
