2 Gerontology In view of the rapid ageing population in Asia, the programme aims at promoting innovative teaching and learning in gerontology, as well as contributing to the development of ageing societies such as Mainland China, and cultivating leaders in elderly-related policy and aged-care services. possess advanced knowledge in gerontology and contemporary issues related to older adults; possess the ability to conduct critical intellectual inquiry in gerontology in light of the best available evidence; possess the ability to generate enquiries about key issues in gerontology and derive an appropriate response; understand, appraise, and analyze the impact of ageing in a global and societal context; identify, formulate, and solve novel and ill-defined problems related to the aged population; function well in a multi-disciplinary team of gerontology and communicate effectively with team members; and demonstrate the potential of becoming responsive leaders in gerontology, especially in policy advocacy. Students are required to complete six compulsory courses, two elective courses and a dissertation or two additional elective courses. 3 Mental Health The programme is designed to provide healthcare and social service practitioners with advanced knowledge on the best evidence-based practice in the treatment, management and rehabilitation of mental disorders. Since the programme also examines the latest service models in mental health practice, it is highly relevant for professionals occupying supervisory, research and policy planning positions as well. expand their understanding of mental health and mental disorders through critically adopting systemic and bio-psycho-social-spiritual frameworks; understand the dynamic influences of cultural factors on illness behaviours and their implications for clinical practice and policy formulation; develop advanced integration in mental health practice for both common and severe mental illnesses; acquire critical appraisal of the latest development in community mental health and rehabilitation policies; master research methods essential for informing clinical decision and policy making; and develop lifelong vision for pursuing the best mental health practice and advocating for good mental health and rehabilitation policies. Students are required to complete six compulsory courses, two elective courses and a dissertation or two additional elective courses. 4 Social Service Management The social service sector demands the managerial staff to embody a host of management knowledge in various areas including human resource, finance, fund raising, marketing, organizational management, strategic management, social policy and administration, research and evaluation, information technology in service delivery, etc. This programme prepares the social service managers to meet the challenges faced by human service organizations today and in the future. have a better understanding of the nature of knowledge in human services; be better equipped with knowledge and skills in utilizing knowledge generated from human services research; be better equipped with knowledge and skills to conduct research in human services; utilize financial information to make management decisions; have a better understanding of the relevant knowledge and the various issues in human resources management; be better equipped with the knowledge and skills in analyzing social policies; and be better equipped with the knowledge about the management of human service organizations. Students are required to complete six compulsory courses, two elective courses and a dissertation or two additional elective courses. 5 Social Work Family Work Stream This programme aims at equipping professionals such as social workers, teachers, psychologists, pastors, and policy makers with tools to offer effective interventions to the families. recognize research as a valuable and important tool to understand family problems and to evaluate the effectiveness of social policies and social services; analyze family issues from an academic and intellectual perspective and apply relevant concepts and theories to complex family situations for designing effective interventions; apply a system perspective to assess individual and family problems; identify socio-cultural and political factors that contribute to the unique family conditions and dynamics in Hong Kong; master major concepts and therapeutic approaches in family therapy such as family life cycle, genogram, structural approach, strategic approach, solution focused approach and narrative approach; conduct joint interviews with couples and family interviews with various combinations of family members; handle typical family problems such as conflict between family members (marital, in-law, sibling or parent-child), family violence, and extra-marital affairs; and gain insights about oneself by critically reviewing one s family origin. Students are required to complete six compulsory courses, two elective courses and a dissertation or two additional elective courses. 6 Social Work Integrated Practice with Young People Stream The programme aims to equip professionals such as social workers, teachers, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, pastors and policy makers with tools for offering effective integrated interventions to young people. understand young people in contemporary changing societies and their problems using the latest social sciences theories; understand and apply advanced evidence-based practices to young people in different service settings; conduct critical intellectual inquiry in youth research and intervention strategies; identify, formulate and critically evaluate new problems and issues related to young people; be an effective player in a multi-disciplinary team working with young people; and demonstrate the potential to be future leaders and advanced practitioners in working with young people.
