MILL HILL Summer School 2016 Academic Summer Courses for ages 12 17 years

Welcome... Uniquely located in beautiful parkland, just 30 minutes from Central London, Mill Hill Summer School provides the perfect setting for learning and enjoyment. Our courses are aimed both at students who will be joining British Boarding Schools and at those who wish to sample British education in the summer. We offer Junior courses to ages 12-14 and Senior courses to ages 15-17, combining English learning with academic subjects, including mathematics and science. These core elements are complemented by a varied programme of Creative activity classes including music, drama, IT, film-making and art. Mill Hill

Mill Hill Summer School provides the perfect setting for learning and enjoyment. Although the focus of our courses is on academic progress, the varied social programme and the exciting range of activities and excursions ensures that students find their summer at Mill Hill stimulating and rewarding. Set within the campus of internationally renowned Mill Hill School, we are able to offer first rate facilities, including indoor heated swimming pool, newly refurbished classrooms, a comfortable and homely boarding house and extensive sports facilities. The safety and well-being of our students is of paramount importance and our suitably trained staff ensure the welfare of pupils from the moment we meet them at the airport to the final farewell on departure. Summer School 03

Academic The Mill Hill Summer School timetable comprises 15 hours of English per week, with a further 15 hours per week divided equally between science and maths classes on the one hand and creative activity classes, such as making music, art, drama and IT on the other. Courses last either 2, 4 or 8 weeks and enable young learners to consolidate their knowledge of academic English, whilst gaining an insight into life in a British boarding school. Classes are divided between Juniors aged 12 to 14 and Seniors aged 15 to 17 and there is a placement test on arrival to establish English levels. The maximum class size is 12 students and lessons take place in the newly refurbished campus of The Mount, Mill Hill International. The science and mathematics classes combine the learning of subject specific vocabulary with practical experiments in well equipped laboratories. A great opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of our capital city, and just half an hour s journey. Mill Hill

Excursions Each week there are two full-day excursions, one to nearby London and the other to attractive destinations such as Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Windsor and the Harry Potter Studio Tour. London visits may include Shakespeare s Globe Theatre, Buckingham Palace, The National Gallery, River Boat Trip to Greenwich, The Tower of London, Madame Tussauds and The London Eye. Brighton is always a popular visit, combining the attractions of a typical English seaside resort with the historical interest of the Royal Pavilion and craft shops of the narrow streets of the Lanes. The ancient university cities of Oxford and Cambridge offer the opportunity to take a College tour and to try punting on the river. The Harry Potter Studio tour is conveniently located less than half an hour s drive from Mill Hill, and offers a fascinating insight into the making of the movies, with many original props, sets and costumes. Stately Windsor Castle, steeped in a thousand years of royal history, is less than an hour away and offers a great opportunity to discover more about British Kings and Queens. There is also a weekly evening trip to Central London, a great chance to soak up the atmosphere of our capital city, and just half an hour s journey using the London underground. All visits are led and supervised by our staff, with students aged 12 to 14 accompanied at all times, whilst those aged 15 to 17 are given the opportunity to have short periods of unsupervised time to encourage them to immerse themselves in their surroundings. Sightseeing, cultural visits and even shopping provide contexts within which speaking and listening skills are put to the test; they are also great fun and provide memories to last a lifetime. Summer School 13

Boarding and Pastoral Care The safety and well-being of our students is our key priority and all staff, from the Course Director to the English teachers and Activity Leaders, play their part in ensuring their welfare. Some of our staff have first aid training, and where necessary students are taken to the local doctor or hospital for medical treatment, in the unlikely event that this is required. Students are accommodated in comfortable single, twin and triple rooms in Collinson boarding house, with separate sections for girls and boys and with a shared common room with television, games and DVD player. Boys and girls may not enter each other s boarding sections or bedrooms. There is an appropriate level of supervision in the boarding house, which is comfortable and homely. The boarding school experience, whether for 2, 4 or 8 weeks, is a great lesson in independence and co-operation for all students, and also an ideal preparation for those planning to continue their education in a British boarding school. The safety and wellbeing of our students is our key priority. Mill Hill

Location & Directions LUTON STANSTED The course includes return transfers from any of the airports marked on this map, or from London St Pancras Station. Parents wishing to bring students directly to the Summer School will find Mill Hill very accessible. Close to the M1, M25 and A1(M), it is within easy driving distance of all London airports.
