1 CAMBRIDGE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL English Language, Study & Social Programmes Ages 15-17
2 WELCOME TO CAMBRIDGE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL Cambridge College Summer School is located in the heart of the wonderful city of Cambridge. Our summer school programme has been specifically designed for international teenagers aged and offers 3 different study options, all available to students of an Upper Intermediate or Advanced level of English. THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMME At Cambridge College the Academic Programme is aimed at students who are currently at an Upper Intermediate level of English or above. This is to ensure that all students are able to express themselves in English without difficulty, and so able to engage and benefit from the academic courses we provide. Students will be asked to complete a two-part online English assessment before their arrival at the college, in order to assess their use of English and level of understanding. The Academic Programme includes the choice of 3 Electives and 2 Afternoon Seminars. Across all the academic modules, we believe in creating a stimulating and interactive environment for students, in order to maximise their learning. Our courses have been written exclusively for Cambridge College and lessons are taught by experienced and qualified native English teachers, to ensure our students receive the best tuition whilst studying with us. Also included in a stay at Cambridge College Summer School is an exciting Social Programme, which offers a wide variety of events, excursions and activities. The Social Programme is very well-suited to our students and, alongside the Academic Programme, provides an incredible summer school experience in the heart of Cambridge. COLLEGE LOCATION MORNING ELECTIVES: Electives are studied for 15 hours per week, across 5 mornings. There are three Electives available: General English (available as a 2 week option) English Literature & Creative Writing (available as a 2 week option) International Relations & Global Leadership (available as a 4 week option) AFTERNOON SEMINARS: Afternoon Seminars are studied for 4 hours per week, across 2 afternoons. There are two Afternoon Seminars available: Academic Writing Philosophy & Critical Thinking Students will also have 1 afternoon session with a Guest Speaker and 1 Academic Excursion to London per 2 week stay. Cambridge College is located at Clare College, one of the private colleges that make up the University of Cambridge. The boarding facilities include twin study rooms, a common area in which students can socialise together and modern facilities, all located in the stunning college grounds. Cambridge College is just a few minutes walk from the centre of Cambridge, which provides a perfect environment for international students to spend their summer and make long-lasting friendships with other students from across the globe. Our students will be able to experience one of England s great cities, be inspired by its stunning architecture and rich history and enjoy discovering what the city of Cambridge has to offer, whilst in the care of our dedicated staff and management team. Clare College, Cambridge.
3 MORNING ELECTIVES There are 3 Electives for our students to choose from. Each Elective is studied for 15 hours each week, across 5 mornings. The options available are General English, English Literature & Creative Writing and International Relations & Global Leadership. Please find below a detailed description of the 3 options we have available. General English This course has been specifically designed to further the development of our students communicative abilities. Through its topical content, students are encouraged to express their ideas and practise the relevant vocabulary and grammar, helping to increase their confidence in expressing themselves in English. Lessons are taught in a student-centred environment and formal presentations are included in the syllabus, requiring students to have an active role in their own learning; a valuable life skill in preparation for the start of college or university. Available as a 2 week option only. English Literature & Creative Writing This course aims to provide students with a wider knowledge on a diverse range of literary styles and techniques. Students are given the chance to discuss famous literary works, both classic and modern, including works of fiction, poetry and plays. The Creative Writing aspect of the course allows our students to develop their own creative writing techniques and ideas, drawing inspiration from both the texts studied in the literature part of the course and from the wealth of British literary history available to our students while studying in the UK. Also included is the exciting opportunity to see productions of some of the literary texts studied. Available as a 2 week option only. International Relations & Global Leadership Like the world around us, International Relations & Global Leadership is fast-paced and dynamic and through it, students are able to build on their knowledge and understanding of the major institutions that shape international policy. Through innovative tasks, debates and conference scenarios, our students will further develop a strong set of skills in negotiation, diplomacy, critical thinking and research and, by the end of the course, be well on their way to becoming tomorrow s leaders. Available as a 4 week option only.
4 AFTERNOON SEMINARS Alongside their Elective, all students at Cambridge College will engage in further study on 2 afternoons per week. Our Afternoon Seminars enable students to develop their English language skills for specific communicative needs, by building and presenting effective arguments, through a focus on either their written or spoken production. There are two options available: Academic Writing or Philosophy & Critical Thinking. The skills developed in both courses are transferable to internationally recognised English examinations, such as FCE/CAE/IELTS, and students will develop their ability to produce more advanced discussions, as well as explore new ideas and actively learn about different views and perspectives from their fellow students. Please see below for more details on the Afternoon Seminars we offer. Academic Writing This module is specifically tailored to develop students English language writing skills for a variety of academic purposes. Academic Writing will enable students to improve key essay writing skills including: structuring an essay, reading and writing critically, constructing more developed arguments in their writing and revising and editing. Course Duration: 4 hours across 2 afternoons per week. Can be selected for 2 weeks or 4 weeks.* Philosophy & Critical Thinking In this module, students will be introduced to a range of both classical and contemporary philosophical themes and concepts. Transferable study skills are an integral part of the programme and these thought-provoking seminars will enable students to develop their ability to analyse, reason and form their own judgements, through the study of challenging topics, group work, classroom discussions and debates. Course Duration: 4 hours across 2 afternoons per week. Can be selected for 2 weeks or 4 weeks.* Guest Speaker & Academic Excursion Our students also have 1 additional afternoon per week dedicated to their Academic Programme and, per 2 week stay, students will have 1 afternoon session with a Guest Speaker and 1 Academic Excursion to London. The Guest Speaker is invited to deliver a lecture or workshop to our students to inspire, motivate or enhance existing study. The Academic Excursion is an afternoon trip to London that is closely linked to their Elective, allowing students to actively apply their English language skills in their chosen field. Workshop venues may include the British Museum for General English students, Shakespeare s Globe Theatre for English Literature & Creative Writing Students and the House of Lords for International Relations & Global Leadership students.
