2 Hello and welcome to Select English, London It has been my pleasure and privilege to be Principal of this school for over 10 years. I count myself very lucky to enjoy my job and work here among a great team of teachers and staff. What also makes the job special is that I get to meet and work with students of all ages and from all around the world. On any Monday of the year, it is always great to welcome our new students as they begin their stay with us. It is marvellous to see them settle in, make friends, enjoy their lessons and make progress towards their particular language goals, whether that is university study, career needs or just the pleasure of learning. The positive feedback that we get from our students regarding their stay at the school gives me confidence that we are making a positive difference and helping them with their English language learning ambitions. 3 Select English London Team We are always happy to offer support to students with queries, difficulties or any other help they might need. Our Reception is open Monday to Friday from to and students can always come and see us during those hours. We also have a 24/7 emergency phone for problems outside office hours. Quality Certification British Council accreditation means that we have been inspected and approved as a reliable establishment. The inspection is repeated every four years. A deposit of 200 must be paid with the registration to reserve your place. The balance must be paid 4 weeks before the start of the course. 4 THE SCHOOL The school opened in Crystal Palace in 1961 and has a wealth of experience in welcoming international students from all over the world. For over 50 years the school has helped students to improve their English, make friends from other parts of the world and experience a different culture. Select English operates out of a beautiful large Victorian building with modern facilities. The school s facilities include a welcoming reception, 9 bright and airy classrooms, an inviting café, a lovely big garden and computers and WIFI to access the Internet. 4

5 Classrooms We have 9 well-equipped classrooms, some of which have interactive whiteboards. Our classrooms are large and pleasant and have all the necessary resources to enable a great learning experience. Café The school café is open at break times and lunch hours and serves a variety of reasonably priced hot meals, snacks and drinks. There is a comfortable indoor and outdoor seating area for students to enjoy their food. Garden Our school garden is a lovely outdoor area for our students to enjoy London s beautiful sun at break time, lunch or after school! Internet We have 8 computers that are connected to the Internet for students to use at break time or after school, and there is free Wi-Fi available throughout the building. 5

6 JUNIOR HOMESTAY London Junior Homestay Course Ages NEW London Junior Homestay is held at our permanent school in Crystal Palace, London and takes full advantage of the beautiful and amazing sites that this wonderful city has to offer. It s a lively course and there is always something going on. Parents can join our multinational 15 or 25-hour General English adult courses; whereas children join our junior course ages Parents and children are accommodated in twin room homestay accommodation. 7

8 LOCATION Crystal Palace Select English, London is situated in Crystal Palace in the south east of London. Crystal Palace is a charming and up-and-coming residential area of London. There are plenty of cafés, shops, parks, restaurants and pubs within a short walk of the school. Crystal Palace is also home to one of London s Premier League Football Clubs Less than 3km away from the school is the home ground of our local Premier League football team Crystal Palace FC (known as The Eagles). Tickets are not easy to obtain, but the school might be able to arrange group bookings, and in the past we have enjoyed some great times at the ground. Airport Transfers for Adult courses We are happy to meet students at the airport on arrival and take them directly to their accommodation. We can also arrange to take students back from their accommodation to the airport on departure. We highly recommend that students under 18 book our airport transfer service. Free Airport Transfer for Junior Homestay Course We offer a free airport transfer for our junior homestay course from/to Heathrow and Gatwick on arrival days (Sundays) and departure days (Saturdays) for students on flights scheduled between 0900 and

10 ACCOMMODATION Homestay accommodation The majority of our students stay with local hosts in Crystal Palace and the surrounding area and most are within walking distance of the school. All our homestay accommodation is carefully chosen and regularly visited by our Accommodation Officer to ensure they meet required standards. Our Accommodation Officer is also always available to deal with any concerns that students may have during their stay. We also have a few private homes where more than four students are accommodated. Private Residence Our residence is ideally located in the Triangle of Crystal Palace, only a ten-minute walk from the school. The residence consists of a three-bedroom flat with a fully-fitted shared kitchen and bathroom. It is self-catering, has free Wi-Fi, washing machine, TV in all rooms and is cleaned on a weekly basis. Minimum age is 21. Queens Hotel The Queens Hotel is a budget hotel less than a fiveminute walk from Select English and is ideal for either groups or individuals. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms. 10

11 STUDENTS Our students are an interesting mix of people from more than 20 different countries. They come to us to improve their English, make friends and experience a different culture. Meet some of them below. I spent three great months at Select English and it was one of the most interesting times in my life. I met teachers at Select English for whom teaching is not only a job but also a huge pleasure and passion. Crystal Palace is a fantastic place to hang out with friends. 12 OUR TEACHERS All our teachers hold recognised TEFL qualifications. Their professionalism, enthusiasm, humour and experience are key factors in making the lessons at Select English both effective and fun. Gareth Thomas Gareth is our longest serving member of staff, having been here since It s not unknown for some of our present day students to be the sons or daughters of Gareth s former students from years ago! Gareth studied English & Philosophy before joining the school after university. Ben Betts Ben joined the school in the summer of 2009 and has become an integral member of staff. He s a Chemistry graduate and enjoys teaching all levels and is particularly good at getting students to speak and communicate with greater confidence and accuracy. Lis Watts Lis joined the school relatively recently in January 2014 after teaching at high schools and colleges in Italy. She brings a quiet enthusiasm to her lessons and students respond very positively. Jeff Banks Jeff has been with the school since 2003 and is one of our senior teachers, covering for the Principal during his annual leave. He studied Philosophy as well as English Literature & Linguistics at university and brings knowledge of all of these subjects to his lessons to help get the best from his students. Astrid Smith Astrid has worked with us since joining us in the spring of She has a very good understanding of the difficulty some language learners face with English grammar, which helps her teach very effectively, especially low level students. Sabine Mairey Sabine holds the more advanced EFL teaching qualification, DELTA, and has been with the school since She s lived and taught English in Peru and her lessons engage students with a variety of tasks and activities designed to improve their fluency and accuracy. Garry Wildridge Garry is our third Philosophy graduate on the teaching staff and enjoys getting students to discuss lively and interesting topics in the class. He also has a background in Business & Finance and has taught several of our Business students in group and 1-1 situations as well as taking our General English classes too. 12

14 COURSES General English for ages 16+ Key Facts Hours per week: 15 or 25 (60 minutes lessons) Start dates: Every Monday Levels: Elementary to Advanced Plus Maximum class size: 14 Learning material: provided by the school Our General English classes run throughout the year and you can start on any Monday unless it is a public holiday. You can follow our courses for any length of time from 1 week to 12 months. You also have the option of studying for 15 hours per week (Standard) or 25 hours per week (Intensive). By choosing the Intensive course you get everything from the Standard morning lessons plus extra language practice and tuition in the afternoons where even greater emphasis can be placed on speaking and listening practice. Levels Each student is given our placement test on their first day and placed in the appropriate level. We have classes from Elementary to Advanced Plus (A2 C2). Progress through our levels is via our end of course tests in week 8. Please note that we do not offer courses for beginners. Class size The maximum number of students in a class is 14. Content The lessons are based on our 8 week syllabus with relevant and practical vocabulary topics as well as grammar and structures for effective communication. 14

Lesson Class begin practising new language by completing writing and speaking tasks in pairs/groups with teacher guiding and helping. Lesson Further speaking practice as students complete questionnaires around class on subject of health before feeding back results to teacher and rest of class. Lunch Lunch is available in our on-site café or at a number of local cafés and restaurants. Lesson Pre-teaching of useful vocabulary contained in a reading text on topic of unusual facts about London. Comprehension checking. Lesson Speaking practice as students discuss the reasons and issues behind these unusual facts. Round up of ideas. Feedback. *Sample given is for an Intermediate level class (B1) Free language support for working in the UK. For those students entitled to work in the UK and hoping to find employment, we offer free language support classes for working in an English-speaking environment. The lessons will cover CV writing, job search skills and interview techniques as well as a practical insight into the working culture in the UK and what to expect in the UK workplace. The teacher will use practical examples and role play to help give students the ability and confidence to find work here and integrate more fully into the workplace. NEW One-to-One tuition Students decide on the number of lessons they would like to take with lessons aimed towards the students individual learning requirements. 15

16 GROUP COURSES Select English is very experienced at organising group courses all year round. Every year we accommodate substantial numbers of groups ranging in size from 6 to up to 45 in homestay or hotel accommodation. Our homestay accommodation is close to the school so that all students live in proximity to the school. The Queens Hotel is less than five minutes from the school. Group courses are tailor-made and can, apart from tuition, include special project work or social activities accompanied by one of our staff. 17 English For Business: Inside And Outside The Classroom Our English for Business course is ideal for students that want to get a bit extra out of their stay in London and continue their learning outside the classroom. The tuition includes a variety of business related topics and the trips take students on visits inside various world famous UK institutions. Inside the classroom Tuition includes a selection of the following: Business letters and s, business telephone conversations, meetings and negotiations, CV writing and job interviews. Outside the classroom The two-week course aims to include the following visits (subject to availability): BBC, Old Bailey, Kensington Palace, Fuller s Brewery, Bank of England Museum and a walk around the Houses of Parliament. (Entrance included in course fees). Professional Internship Programme The professional internship programme is an unpaid work placement at a London-based company. This programme is ideal for students and young professionals who want to improve their English in a working environment and gain practical knowledge of a certain business sector. Placements in many different industries are offered such as Business Administration, Charities, Customer Service, Fashion, Hospitality, Marketing, Media and many more. (Minimum age is 18, English level at least B2 and only EU passport holders are eligible). 17 new year s eve celebrations at big ben Christmas Course Select English, London is one of the few schools that is open at Christmas. It is a great opportunity to experience Christmas in a different culture and London during the festive season:.
