Introduction This document describes how to configure and use Microsoft s Remote Desktop via Massey University s Virtual Private Networking for PCs running Microsoft Windows XP. Once you ve followed the steps below, you will be able to connect to your work PC from both International and National locations. This guide assumes a basic knowledge of how to operate a computer running Windows XP and concentrates on the special aspects of using this service. Prerequisites To make use of the VPN Service you will need the following: This document assumes you already have access to Virtual Private Network (VPN), if you don t then please complete the following online form before continuing any further. http://its-intra-db.massey.ac.nz/intranet/infrastructure/remacc/vpn_application.cgi To have access to a computer with an existing internet connection (see Minimum Connection Requirements) To be familiar with the Massey University Policy on the Use of Information Communication & Processing Systems, a copy of which can be found at http://its-intra.massey.ac.nz/policies/policyuse.htm. Minimum Connection Requirements Due to the amount of data that will need to be transferred it is recommended that machines not connected to a network use at least a 33.6kbps modem. For optimum performance a v.90 56kbps modem or other high speed internet connection (e.g. Broadband) is recommended. Related Documents To assist you with setting up Remote Desktop, it is recommended that the following document be printed off beforehand: Enabling VPN on a XP computer http://its-intra.massey.ac.nz/services/pdfs/using_vpn_windows_xp.pdf Help Please direct any general queries or fault reports to the Information Technology Services (ITS) Help Desk on ext. 5200, or email to help.desk@massey.ac.nz. Please be aware that some faults you may encounter may be due to problems with your own internet connection and, as such, must be resolved by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The ITS Help Desk will advise you if this is the case. Page 3 of 7

Step 1 Setting up your work computer 1. Note down the IT number of your work computer, as you will need this in later on in Step 5. 2. From your work computer, click on the Start menu and select Control Panel and double click on System to show your computer s System Properties. 3. Under the Remote tab, place a tick in the box Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. 4. Return to the control panel, this time double clicking on Windows Firewall icon, select the Exceptions tab and place a tick next to Remote desktop. Page 4 of 7

Step 2 - Setting up your XP home computer To enable VPN on a XP computer please follow the Windows XP Setup instructions found at: http://its-intra.massey.ac.nz/services/pdfs/using_vpn_windows_xp.pdf. Step 3 - Connecting to Massey VPN 1. Double click Massey VPN shortcut on desktop (refer to Massey VPN setup instructions above if you don t have one) 2. This will bring up the Connect Window enter your Massey login details, and click Connect It should then say 3. Once the connection is established this window will disappear and you will be connected. Any other error contact the ITS helpdesk via help.desk@massey.ac.nz. Page 5 of 7

Step 4 - Connecting to your Massey computer via XP Remote Desktop 1. You can access Remote Desktop by either clicking on the Start menu select Run and type in MSTSC and click OK or you can access it by clicking on the Start menu > Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection 2. A Remote Desktop Connection box will appear. Type in your work computers IT number (that you wrote down in Step 1) and click connect. 3. You will then receive a login prompt where you can log in with your existing Massey credentials. Once logged on, your work desktop should load just as it would if you were logging on at work. 4. Disconnect from Remote Desktop by clicking the X at the top right of the window, you will receive a warning message as shown below, click OK to continue. Page 6 of 7

Note: disconnecting effectively locks your Massey desktop rather than logging off, so when you return to your work machine it will show as locked and you will need to ctrl+alt+del to log back on. You can also choose to log off completely by selecting Log Off from within the Remote Desktop session. 5. To reconnect to Massey VPN, follow steps listed under Step 3 Connecting to Massey VPN IMPORTANT: The Massey VPN connection speed will only be as good as the internet connection you re using. If you are on dial-up we would advise you to use Remote Access because using Remote Desktop via VPN will be extremely slow and could become frustrating to use. Page 7 of 7
