1 Setting Up VPN Connection to use Internet Access 1. Right click on My Network Places and click on Properties 2. Right click on the appropriate VPN connection and click properties

2 3. Click on the Networking tab, and the double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

3 4. Click the Advanced tab, and then uncheck Use default gateway on remote network.

4 5. Once this is done, click OK on all respective windows to close. 6. You should now be able to browse the internet while connected to the appropriate VPN.

5 Finding the IP Address of your PC Once you have established your VPN connection, you will want to connect to your desktop at the office, via a Remote Desktop Session. To do this you will first need to know the IP address of your PC at the office. To find this information, on your PC at the office, go to Start/Run and type CMD in the Open: box. Click OK. This will bring up a black DOS type window. At the prompt type ipconfig and press the enter key. This will return information as shown above. Note the IP Address line and write down the information as above ( ) take this information home with you. You will also need to leave your office PC on, but locked. To do this press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys simultaneously and chose Lock Computer. Finding the IP Address of your PC.doc Page 1 of 1

6 Creating the VPN connection from Windows XP Locate My Network Places (it may be on your Windows Desktop, your start menu or on the My Computer Window) and right click on it. Go to properties. 7 On the New Connections Wizard, click Next> on the first page. On the second page, check the Radio button in front of Connect to the network at my workplace. Click Next>. 8 On the next page, type Hanover or Township or some other familiar name in the Company Name box. Click Next> On the next page, if you are using dial up internet access, check the radio button in front of Automatically dial this initial connection: and select your service provider from the drop down menu. If you are using Cable or another high speed service check the radio button in front of Do not dial the initial connection. Click Next>.. Creating the VPN Connection from Windows XP.doc Page 3 of 7

9 On the next page, enter the IP address in the box as shown below. Click Next>. Will you be the only person using this connection from this PC? If not, Anyone s use. Click Next>. Creating the VPN Connection from Windows XP.doc Page 4 of 7

10 On the next page, check the box in front of Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop. Click Finish. This will bring up the Roselle/Village Connection Window. Creating the VPN Connection from Windows XP.doc Page 5 of 7

11 Click on the properties button and go to the Security tab. Uncheck the Require data encryption box. Click OK. Enter your network username (usually first initial and last name) and password. 12 . You will notice a new icon (it looks like 2 computer monitors side-by-side) in the lower right-hand side of the screen by the time display. If you hover your mouse pointer over it, it will say Hanover/Township or whatever you named this connection. You must close this VPN connection when you are done, so double-click this icon (or double-click the Hanover/Township icon on the desktop) and the window below will appear. 13 Establishing the Remote Desktop connection from Windows XP Once you have established your VPN connection, you will want to connect to your desktop, via a Remote Desktop Session. To do this you will first need to know the IP address of your PC at the office. This information should have previously been collected using the instructions in Finding the IP Address of your PC.doc. You will also need to have left your office PC on, but locked. To create the Remote Desktop Connection, go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Communications and right click on Remote Desktop Connection. This will bring up a menu, Send to, then click on Desktop (create shortcut). Establishing the Remote Desktop Connection from Windows XP.doc Page 1 of 2

14 This will place a shortcut on your desktop. Double click the shortcut and enter the IP Address you previously collected from your PC at the office. Click connect. This will bring you to a login prompt for your office PC. Use your regular login information. Once you are logged in you will be in control of your PC at the office.
