What are the underlying principles that structure the Danish apprach t wrking with children? These questins serve as a springbard int the field f pedaggy in Denmark. This curse emphasizes and integrates applicatin f research, critical reflectin and hands n experience in rder t explre the cnnectin between pedaggical appraches and prfessinal practices with children. Yu will be immersed within Danish sciety while wrking nce a week at a Danish childcare institutin r schl. Paired tgether with yur cre curse, yur experience will supplement the educatinal, scial, develpmental, and histrical theries presented. Onging themes will permeate ur study. They include (but are nt limited t): What is the Danish definitin f the gd childhd? Frm a Danish pedaggical perspective, what cultural values and scial trends are visible in the daily rutines when wrking with children? Hw can yur bservatins frm yur site cntribute t a discussin abut educatinal plicies and refrm bth in Denmark and in the United States? The curse is designed as a cmbinatin between visits t yur practicum site, advise meetings in grups and classes intended t prmte grup discussin and debate abut yur experiences. Reflectins n yur bservatins will be the fundatins f discussins and analysis abut the activities, rutines, and behavirs in Danish institutins and schls. Objectives: In this curse, students will examine current research and assessments in relatin t pedaggy in a Danish cntext. By the end f this curse, students will be able t: Demnstrate a knwledge f the majr elements, theretical perspectives, and interdisciplinary appraches t the discipline f pedaggy Actively participate in the everyday wrkings f a Danish children s institutin r schl Debate and reflect n the current challenges and debates within Danish pedaggy in particular thrugh the integratin f research with practical bservatins and experiences Assess this applicatin thrugh the develpment f bservatinal, analytical, and creative thinking skills Practicum: Students are placed in a Danish Vuggestue (infant -tddler center), Børnehave (pre-schl), Flkeskle (public schl), r Fritidshjem/Klub (after schl prgram). Students will bserve and interact with children each week, wrking under the guidance f a supervising pedaggue. Althugh students will be appinted a practicum supervisr at the site, they are als expected t cnsult the ther staff t ask fr help, instructin and guidance when needed. At the practicum site, students will experience the everyday culture f the institutin: wrking with children, staff and parents. Yu are required t g t yur site at least 10 times and attain between 45-55 hurs f practical experience. Yu are als encuraged t make ne visit t a fellw student s site in rder t experience the differences between practices within Danish preschl and schl facilities. Practicum Supervisin: Additinally, thrugh the semester, yu will als have 3 mandatry Practicum Advising sessins that yu will attend in small grups based n the type f site at which yu have been placed. The cntent f these supervisin sessins will be t discuss yur experiences and bservatins in cmparisn t thers in yur grup, as well as t bring up any challenges r questins that arise. There will be independent wrk in yur assigned grups prir t each advise meeting where yu prepare fr the meeting with yur advisr. Apprach t teaching: Besides yur independent visit t yur practicum site, this curse is structured as a series f classes and advising sessins, in crdinatin between Eeva and Heidi. The classes will include theretical and practical tpics and activities t help fster learning at the practicum visits. The advising days are centered n central cncepts and themes frm yur experiences at yur site, and are designed as an pprtunity t use yur faculty and fellw students as prfessinal resurces. 3. Field studies. As the majrity f the curse cmpnent is yur weekly visit t yur site, field studies are nt included as part f this curse. The hands-n, experiential element thrugh practicum visits is fully utilized in class discussins, lectures, and assignments. 4. Expectatins f the students: In this curse each and every ne f us has the equal and unique respnsibility t facilitate the mst ptimal learning utcmes. Yu are expected t: cmplete all reading assignments prir t cming t class be respective and inclusive t all members f the class cntribute t class discussins and grup activities with questins and reflectins draw upn yur interactins and bservatins frm daily life in Denmark t the thery, research, and practices f Danish pedaggy in class be punctual and attend all classes and visits Bring yur lgbk with written experiences and reflectin frm every practicum visit When participating in the designated seminar days, yu are expected t be able t take initiative t wrk bth independently and in a grup. Time Sheets and Attendance: At the end f the semester, students must submit a cmpleted time sheet with the signature f the supervising pedaggue t cnfirm that they have cmpleted the required hurs fr this curse (45-55 hurs). Time sheets must be handed in at the CDD ffice t the curse mailbx. It is the student s respnsibility t get this sheet signed by staff at the practicum site during each visit. Make-up hurs: Visits t the sites will take place n 10 scheduled Thursdays; hwever, if yu need t make up hurs, yu are respnsible fr scheduling them with yur site. There are 11 pssible Thursdays ver the curse f the Spring 2016 semester it is yur respnsibility t arrange with yur site directly (in advance!) which 10 f the 11 Thursdays yu will be present at yur site. Lgbk: Thrughut the semester, yu will reflect and summarize yur experiences at yur site thrugh writing bth pen-ended and directed analytical reflectins in yur lgbks. Yu are required t write in yur lgbk fllwing EVERY visit t yur site. The curse cntent is dependent n the bservatins and reflectins yu have at yur practicum and yu are expected t use the lgbk as a fundatin fr yur learning prcess. Thrughut the semester, yu will chse three entries which yu feel exemplify yur reflectins and cnnectins frm yur experiences and yur cre curse best, and submit them alng with yur Practicum Advising preparatin sheet electrnically (either typed r scanned). These lgbk entries must include actual bservatins. Each submissin will be between 1-2 pages, and are due befre every Practicum Advising meeting. Each persn will give a presentatin t the class and teachers that is backed up by a physical prduct (pster, sculpture, suitcase etc.). The audience is expected t give feedback t the presenter after the presentatin, which the teachers will als d. It will be expected that yu include visual items such as pictures, drawings, lgbk ntes, persnal ntes etc. which supprt the verbal presentatin. Yu may chse the fcus f the tpic yurself, but it has t relate t the curse descriptin, curse readings and tpics discussed in class. A high academic level, yur understanding f the readings, yur ability t cnnect thery frm class and experiences frm practicum, field studies, study turs r ther real life experiences, independent thinking, reflectins and interesting pints will be rewarded. Plicies Attendance Yu are expected t attend all DIS classes when scheduled. If yu miss a class fr any reasn please cntact the faculty prir t the class.
