Bring Your Own Device at Oatley Public School 2016 Dear Parents/ Caregivers, Oatley Public School thanks you for all of your support in continuing to make our Bring Your Own Device program a successful one. The school recognises the need to prepare our students for a rapidly-changing world, where technology plays a large role in our personal, social and professional lives. Our findings from student consultations have revealed our students and teachers involved in the program for 2015 have found it beneficial in many ways and are overwhelmingly happy with our first year of the program. We have lots of ideas on how to improve the program for 2016 and beyond and we are excited about the future of 21 st Century learning at Oatley PS. The success of this program relies on several factors and we hope that student access to technology, student responsibility and access to the relevant tools (in this case, ipad Applications), parental and staff understanding will improve the educational outcomes for our OPS students. We hope to strengthen the link between home and school with through strategies such as BYOD. Students will take their devices home each afternoon to charge and can share classwork with their parents and family. We have put together this information package on our BYOD program for parents of students in years 5 and 6 for 2016. We will continue to support ipads as the chosen device. This decision has been made in accordance with our current software and hardware (eg. Airserver which links our Interactive Whiteboards to the tablets) at the school and, in addition to this, our teachers and students have been trained in the use of these devices. Our school ipads will be used to support classes in Kindergarten to Year 4 and there will also be some available for students in years 5 and 6 to use during school hours, if they are unable to bring their own ipad. Our goal is for all students at Oatley Public School to have equitable access to the technology they need to meet our State and National Outcomes in all Key Learning Areas, and allowing students to bring their own technology into the classroom is a fantastic way to do so. Schools in Australia have recently implemented a huge curriculum change as we moved from syllabus documents provided by each individual state, to an Australian Curriculum. New South Wales has the added changes that have been implemented by our Department of Education and Communities so we have the NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum. There are many changes in the new documents but the one that is most notable is the switch from Information Technology and computer use as a separate component to other learning outcomes, to the integration of Information Communication Technology (ICT) into every facet of learning. ICT is now an objective that must be met across every Key Learning Area and not only must students be able to use technology in these areas but it must be used in a way that promotes 21 st Century Learning including; problem solving, communicating, collaborating, critical and creative thinking and analysing. Within any learning environment, there are many differing contexts to take into

Bring Your Own Device at Oatley Public School 2016 consideration, web-based learning must have dynamic properties and be active, flexible, customizable and adaptive, which is exactly what our new curriculum is asking us to do. It is recommended that parents set up the itunes account for the ipads that will be brought to school as there will be no need for them to update or purchase apps at school. Students should not be signed up to itunes through their school DEC email account. We also recommend that a PIN be placed on the ipad before it comes to school and this PIN not be shared with anyone else. This way, only the student that owns the ipad will be able to access anything on the ipad. Please check the technical specifications of the device before sending it to school. It is recommended that ipads have a lightening connector and have at least 15GB of space to store their work. In this information package you will find: - Important Information for parents including a required Apps list, Safety and Security of devices, Insurance information and instructions on setting up and using an ipad - A special offer for OPS families from Apple Store, Miranda. All parents are invited to attend the BYOD Information Evening on Wednesday the 11 th of November at 6pm in our school library. If you require further information, please check the posts on our school website at www.oatleypublicschool.nsw.edu.au or contact the school. You can find our Oatley Public School Bring Your Own Device Policy document on the website under For Parents and Resources. T0echnological Specifications Students are invited to bring an ipad, ipad o an ipad Air to school next year. An ipad Mini will also be acceptable. The CONNECT.IT BYO Device requirements from the Department of Education and Communities are below. Eg. ios9.2 Please take these into consideration when selecting the ipad for your child to bring to school. NB: Students will be connecting to the internet through the schools wireless network. This means students will log on to a safe DEC, web filtering portal and agree to the terms and conditions of use. It also means that parents will not be paying for internet access whilst students are at school. If you purchase an ipad with 3G/4G capabilities (the ipad has a sim card that allows it to connect to an external wireless network), please ensure this is turned off when the device comes to school. ipad Apps for Stage 3 For Semester 1, students are required to have the following Apps installed on their ipads for school use. All the listed Apps are available through the Apple App Store. It is essential that you have an itunes Account to purchase the Apps. Apps can be paid for using a Credit Card or an itunes Card (available from most department stores, including supermarkets). Instructions on how to create and use these accounts are included in this package. At the end of Term 2, teachers will review the list of apps and may ask for additional apps to be installed. We recommend you SEARCH for the name of the App, CHECK the ICON and COST is the same as shown below, before you commit to purchasing the App. Depending on the version you have, some of the Apps below may already come with your ipad. Please ensure the apps are working and your child has had a chance to explore the apps at home. In-App Purchases - At times, an app will prompt you to upgrade to a more advanced version. The school does not require you to do this. It is your decision whether you wish to upgrade the app. You can turn off in-app purchases in the ipads settings.

Safety and Security It is strongly recommended that you take out insurance for your child s ipad, however we are putting many safety and security measures to ensure every precaution is taken whilst students are at school. The school has purchased lockers for every stage 3 classroom and each student will have their own locker which they will use to store their ipad. The lock needs to have a thick steel bar that can go around a 2cm bar. Students will be required to bring a lock to school at the start of the year, similar to the pictures on the left, and have their own unique number code. Under no circumstances are students to share locks, lockers or their number codes. Students will be permitted in GBlock to ensure ipads are locked away before school and then they will be locked away again at Lunch and at Fruitbreak. ipads will not be permitted in the playground before school or during the students break times. It is a requirement that all ipads be fitted with a cover before they come to school. It is up to the individual family as to what protective cover to choose. It is recommended that the thicker, stronger, anti-slip cases and we encourage the use of screen protectors. We also highly recommend the cases with an attached keyboard as this is helpful when the students have a lot to type and develops their speed and accuracy in typing. ipads will be brought to school Monday through to Thursday (Not Fridays due to PSSA and other sporting activities) and will be taken home each night for charging. Students should not have the expectation that they will be able to charge devices at school. It is also a recommendation that all ipads be PIN protected and students should not share their PIN with anyone. Insurance for your child s ipad The Department of Education and Communities and Oatley Public School cannot accept any responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged devices. The guidelines for the BYOD program specifically address the risk of students bringing their own devices to school.

Below are 2 quick example quotes from November 2015 from two (of several) companies that provide ipad insurance. The school does not endorse any preferred company, but suggests you ask your own home and contents insurance company first or search on the internet for suitable providers. itunes: How to set up an Apple ID within itunes To purchase and download from the itunes Store, you'll need to have an Apple ID. How to Buy from the App Store on Your ipad Apps provide all kinds of functionality for your ipad and you get them from Apple's App Store. Searching the App Store The App Store is one of the ipad's built-in apps. This portal will get you to thousands of great apps for everything from games to bean counting. Here's your quick introduction to using the App Store to obtain whatever apps your heart desires: 1. Tap the App Store icon on your ipad Home screen. 2. At this point, you have several options for finding apps: Tap in the Search field, enter a search term, and tap the Search button on the onscreen keyboard to see results. Tap the Previous or Next arrow to see more selections, or tap the See All link to display all selections. Tap one of the images of an app in the Spotlight area at the top of the screen to see more details about it. Tap the New or What's Hot tab at the top of the screen to see those categories of apps. Tap the Top Charts button on the bottom of the screen to see what free and paid apps other people are downloading most. Tap the Categories button to search by types of apps. Getting apps from the App Store Once you have an account, you can use the saved payment information there to buy apps with a few simple steps, or download free apps. In this example, you can download the free ibooks app. 1. With the App Store open, tap the Search field and enter ibooks. 2. Tap the Price button (which in this case reads "") for ibooks in the results that appear. Note that, to get a paid app, you'd tap on the Price button, which would display the cost of the app at this point. 3. The Price button changes to read Install App (or in the case of a paid app, the button changes to read Buy App). Tap that button. The app will dowlnoad and if it is not free, at this point your credit card is charged for the purchase price. Only pre-installed apps are located on the first Home screen of your ipad by default. Apps you download are placed on additional Home screens and you scroll to view and use them (unless you move them to a different Home screen). How to Create Folders for Apps on an ipad's Home Screen With only twenty apps visible on each of your ipad's Home screen pages, folders can help you cram more in to avoid constant swiping from one screen to another. Organise your space on your ipad and keep school Applications altogether by creating multiple folders for apps.

1. Tap and hold an app icon on your ipad s Home screen until all the icons begin to wobble. 2. Drag an app you want to put into a folder on top of another app you would like to include. 3. A folder is created using the two apps you added. You can name the folder by tapping on the title and typing. 4. Tap anywhere outside of the folder's contents to finish creating your folder and return to the Home screen. 5. You can now drag more apps to the folder if you wish. Tap the Home button again once you are finished. 6. When you need to access apps in your folder, simply tap the folder's icon to view its contents. 7. To remove an app from the folder, tap and hold any app on the home screen until the apps begin to wobble. 8. Tap on the folder containing the app you wish to remove. 9. Drag the app out of the folder. Drop it anywhere outside the folder to remove it. 10. Press the home button to exit the editing mode and keep using your ipad.
