St. Charles College Credit Plus Information Guide What is College Credit Plus? College Credit Plus is a program that gives high school students an opportunity to be enrolled in both high school and college course work at the same time. Students must qualify academically and the tuition will be at a reduced rate. College Credit Plus replaces Ohio s Post-Secondary Enrollment Options program (PSEO) and all dual enrollment programs. What is the cost of the program? The cost of the program can vary from college to college. Students may apply for College Credit Plus funding as part of the state law for private school students. There is limited funding available for college classes. In the past, seniors received funding for two college semester classes and juniors for one college semester class. Please be aware that this may change. St. Charles has no control over this process and is reliant upon the Ohio Department of Education for funding decisions. What College Credit Plus Options are available at St. Charles? Students at St. Charles have three options for College Credit Plus; Latin and/or math beyond AP Calculus BC at Ohio State, Ohio Dominican Physics, and summer college classes (these classes will not replace courses required by St. Charles). 1) Ohio State: Latin and Math Latin students who have taken AP Latin as juniors may apply for and take a Latin course at OSU to receive the fourth year language requirement. Math students who have taken AP Calculus BC as juniors may apply for and take the next level OSU math course (based on a placement test) to receive the math requirement course. *** Students who apply to OSU must be admitted to the OSU Academy program to take these courses. 2) Ohio Dominican University: Physics 119, 120 credit through our Honors Physics course Honors Physics junior or senior students may apply for credit and funding for Ohio Dominican Physics courses (Physics 119 first semester and Physics 120 second semester). These courses are embedded in our Honors Physics course, and it is taught on the St. Charles campus by St. Charles staff. In 2015-2016 only one semester was approved by the state for funding due to state budget constraints.

3) New for 2016 summer classes at OSU, Ohio Dominican, Columbus State, or Ohio U in Pickerington Beginning this year students may apply to take a class (or more) at these participating schools in the summer. Summer classes DO NOT substitute for St. Charles subject requirements and they may or may not be funded by the state. If these classes are funded, they will affect funding for your classes during the school year if you take Honors Physics or Latin/math at OSU. Will these classes transfer to the college I choose to attend? There is no guarantee that the class you take will transfer to the college you eventually attend. Some private, selective colleges may prefer AP courses to college course credits earned through College Credit Plus. Ohio public universities who are participating in the program have a transfer agreement for coursework. These may transfer upon enrollment in a public college or university in Ohio. What is the process for applying and participating in College Credit Plus? Step 1: Decide if participation is in your best interest. This should be an individual decision for each student. Discuss with your parents, teachers, and counselor; they know you and can help you make a good decision. Step 2: Complete the Letter of Intent by February 15 th. Please bring this form to the Guidance office. Step 3: Turn in Transcript Request form to Guidance Office. Step 4: Apply to the college or university by February 15 th. Please be aware that state deadlines have changed to an earlier timeframe this year for this program. Ohio State University Latin/math/language 1) Students must apply on-line to The Academy Program at OSU by 2/15/16. http://undergrad.osu.edu/academy/how_to_apply.html#applyonline 2) Students must demonstrate college readiness by submitting ACT/SAT scores and must meet academic standards that are similar to students currently enrolled at OSU.

Ohio Dominican University Honors Physics 1) Students must apply on-line to the Project Jump Start application to Ohio Dominican by 2/15/16. http://www.ohiodominican.edu/future-students/academics/middle-high-schoolstudents/project-jumpstart/application Summer Course Options - variety of courses 1) Please see Mr. Stahlman or schedule an appointment by February 10 th. You will need to apply to the college of your choice early, potentially by February 15 th. Step 5: Submit your Funding Application AND your letter of acceptance from the college to the College Credit Plus website by April 8th (this date is subject to change based on the state of Ohio regulations). THIS MUST BE COMPLETED TO RECEIVE FUNDING FOR COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS CLASSES. You may create a SAFE account now through the Ohio Department of Education at: https://safe.ode.state.oh.us/portal How are College credits converted to St. Charles credits? 5 semester credits = 1.0 high school Carnegie Credit 4 semester credits = 1.0 high school Carnegie Credit 3 semester credits = 1.0 high school Carnegie Credit 2 semester credits =. 67 high school Carnegie Credit 1 semester credit =.33 high school Carnegie Credit How will College Credit Plus classes impact my GPA? At St. Charles these courses will be included in your GPA with an Honors/AP weighting. If you decide to attend the college in which you take the course the grade will calculate into your college GPA.

Important information you should know about College Credit Plus classes: St. Charles is at the mercy of the State Department of Education for funding. The funding formulas and amounts can vary each year. If you take college courses you are considered to be a college student. You are responsible to see and meet with professors and to be independent. If taking a course at the university, such as Ohio State, it is your responsibility to find transportation to and from the class. Students taking College Credit Plus courses are subject to the rules and regulations of the university they attend, including add/drop dates established by the participating institution. This also includes disciplinary infractions. Your academic calendars may be different. As an example your spring break could fall at one date at St. Charles and another at OSU. You are responsible for attending both institutions. While in college courses, students are introduced to a learning environment that promotes an open exchange of ideas. Course content is presented at an adult level, and class discussions require a mature understanding of divergent viewpoints and the ability to think critically on controversial issues. Students should understand that these courses are college-level courses, and the amount of work, pace, and rigor of content in college courses may be greater than high school courses. In addition, college course grades become a part of a student s permanent college transcript and are calculated into the college grade point average. Poor performance in college courses may affect future university admissions and financial aid. Therefore, it is important to perform well in college courses to realize the benefits of taking college courses while in high school. These courses and the grades associated with them will be reported on both the student s high school transcript as well as the college transcript.

College transcripts can be requested by visiting the respective college or university website associated with the courses taken. St. Charles does not have access to college transcripts.
