EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL
Overview of CC+ WHAT IS COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS? College Credit Plus (CC+) is an opportunity for qualified high school students to take college classes before graduation CC+ Covers all dual credit programs High School and College Credit Free of charge to the student On campus, at the high school and on-line Students may also participate in a self-pay option. These students will receive college credit (no high school credit available)
Self-Pay WHY WOULD I DO SELF-PAY? 1. Self-Pay is the only option available during the summer 2. Self-pay students may not want to have college classes on the high school transcript 3. Non-public and Home School students may do self-pay if they do not receive state funding for CC+
What does CC+ Cover? CC+ students will have costs paid by the school district. This includes: Tuition Books (student may be required to return at the end of the term) Fees CC+ does not include: Optional Fees (parking, gym membership) Transportation
Maximum Credit Hours CC+ Limits students to 30 credit hours MAX per academic year Formula to determine eligible college hours: Take student s # of high school only Carnegie units and multiply by 3. Subtract that answer from 30. This will give you the number of hours for which student may earn in that academic year.
Benefits of CC+ Free college credit Opportunity to enroll in classes not available at high school Exposure to college faculty/ college expectations College credit may transfer easily (especially between public institutions within Ohio)
Risks of CC+ Financial Risk College coursework may be more rigorous and take more time than high school coursework Transportation not provided for on-campus classes Course credit may not transfer to private or out-of-state colleges Federal Financial Aid may be impacted
Who can participate in CC+? Students must be in grades 7 12 Students must file letter of intent with HS counselor by April 1 Students must meet the admission criteria set by the college
Who should participate in CC+? Students who are motivated and mature Students who are academically strong students Students who want to explore academic areas that may not be available at their high school Students who have the time to devote to college classes
CC+, AP, IB, Honors What s Best? Selective admissions colleges look for students who have the most rigorous courses Both the subject matter and the level of rigor are considered Students should take math all four years of high school Natural Sciences and Foreign Language courses are also highly rigorous It is often better to take a rigorous high school course than a college course
What are your next steps? 1. Meet with your high school counselor to discuss your options 2. Complete the Intent to Participate form at your high school by April 1 3. Apply for admission to the college of your choice
Establishing a quality dual credit program will enhance [our] efforts and create reliable pathways that produce more college- and career-ready citizens. John Carey Chancellor, Ohio Board of Regents
The Ohio State Academy The Ohio State version of College Credit Plus is called The Ohio State Academy Program.
Participating in the Academy Academy students will take classes on one of our campuses. There are a limited number of on-line courses, and we do not offer coursework in the high school. Students may choose from a wide range of courses, from Anthropology, Astronomy, Animal Sciences to Arabic, Portuguese or Polish.
Considerations for families It takes time to come to campus! Students should be mature and motivated if they are participating in an individual course (not part of a cohort of high school students). Discuss your student s priorities and goals before applying to The Ohio State Academy Program.
Admission Criteria for Columbus OSU Academy Admission must mirror our process for incoming freshmen students. We use a holistic review process, and consider each student s: Class rank or cumulative GPA Completion of college prep coursework Rigor of coursework (Honors, Advanced Placement, etc.) Leadership and involvement Recommendations from teachers and counselors Application Deadline Autumn semester May 1 Spring Semester November 1
Admission Criteria Regional Campuses OSU Academy Newark, Marion, Mansfield and Lima Open Enrollment Campuses Students must meet the Remediation Free Guidelines of the State of Ohio to be admitted We use ACT or SAT, not COMPASS
How do Students Schedule Classes in the OSU Academy? Class selection occurs at Orientation in late summer Academy students will meet with an advisor at Orientation and before each following semester to set up schedule. Admission to the Academy doesn t guarantee enrollment in a specific course. Students must meet pre-requisite requirements. Students may find that a class isn t offered at a time that fits their schedule. The class may be full by the time the Academy student schedules.
How Does CCP Impact Admissions? Academy students will still need to apply for admission to Ohio State after high school graduation. CCP courses will affect your high school grade point average and class rank, so students who do well will have opportunities for admission and scholarships.
