3 Dual Enrollment Details Dual Enrollment is a program in which a high school student takes one or more college courses and receives credit at both the high school and at the postsecondary institution. Students must apply by March 30 th and have all documents from Johns Creek HS submitted. All students must give their counselor an acceptance letter in order for their classes to be added to their schedule. Dual Enrollment is open to any student enrolled in high school, who is accepted by a state public or private postsecondary institution, and meets criteria for participation in the specific dual enrollment program. Individual colleges may establish additional participation requirements, such as minimum GPA or test scores. Students must be willing to travel to a local college campus to attend classes (if applicable). Please visit to ensure the college/university accepts the classes you re going to register for. JCHS does not have the capability to change any university/college deadlines. This process relies solely on the student. JCHS is not responsible for submitting any documentation to the university/college you apply to. Accommodations to do not transfer to any university/college. You have to apply directly to the university in order to be considered.

4 Dual Enrollment Details Continued Benefits of Dual Enrollment If a student passes the course, they earn college credit. Lightens the AP course load for advanced students (less AP exams in the spring) Provides students the opportunity to grow and mature as they handle college registration, requesting transcripts, and communicating with college level professors It can enable a student to satisfy many general first year college requirements without using HOPE funds. A student can enter college with credits which enables them to potentially register for a lighter load or to drop a class if needed without getting off track from their major

5 Dual Enrollment Options JCHS students can take Dual Enrollment courses three ways: 1. Take college courses on campus at JCHS: a. College English and College Accounting are taught by Gwinnett Tech (subject to availability) b. College Calculus taught by Georgia Tech (subject to availability) 2. Take all courses on the college campus 3. Take some courses at JCHS and some on a college campus

6 How do I participate? Apply and be accepted at the postsecondary institution: Interested students should contact the college of their choice for more information on admissions and participation requirements. All students must submit an application to the college of their choice on or before March 30, Supporting materials such as immunization records, test scores, etc. must be received by the college by May 1, These deadlines are set by Fulton County Schools with approval from the Georgia Department of Education and are not negotiable. Students who have not applied to the college AND submitted their participation form to JCHS by this deadline will NOT be eligible to participate in Dual Enrollment the following school year. Notify and submit a JCHS Dual Enrollment Participation Agreement (this document is on the JCHS website) to your JCHS counselor by March 30, This will also serve as your request to send an official high school transcript to the college. Upon acceptance by a postsecondary institution and your decision to participate in Dual Enrollment, you must provide a copy of your acceptance letter to your counselor. Mandatory Advisement: Your participation in Dual Enrollment and your college course selections must be approved by your high school counselor prior to registering with the college. If you are planning to enroll in college full-time (12 semester hours or more), you and your parent(s) must attend a mandatory advisement meeting with your assigned counselor. Apply for funding: Appropriate application (Accel, MOWR, etc.) must be completed and approved each semester of participation. Failure to apply for funding in a timely manner may result in receiving a bill for tuition.

7 JCHS Expectations for Dual Enrollment Students The three R s. Responsibility Students are responsible for transporting themselves to and from both campuses and cannot be at Johns Creek when they are not scheduled for classes. Students are responsible for ensuring they stay abreast on what is going on at Johns Creek (example, testing schedule, senior activities, and revised schedules during special events). Students are responsible for communicating with their college on all matters regarding this process. JCHS does not have access to any college information. Please contact the university for all matters. Rigor Students should ensure that the courses they select at the college will meet their graduation requirements for high school. Students should ensure they register for courses that they feel are most appropriate for their future college plans. Records Students must provide their official transcript showing their final college grades at the conclusion of each semester to ensure the counselor at Johns Creek add s the credit to the student s FCS transcript (it is especially critical to provide this at least a week prior to graduation). Students must complete the Accel/MOWR application each semester and their counselor to inform them of the courses they have registered for at their college.

8 Dual Enrollment To Do List for Students and Parents Meet with your counselor to sign the enrollment participation sheet by 3/30/2015 (this document is on the JCHS website). Apply and submit all documentation to the college/university you plan to attend (this is the students responsibility). Bring/ your acceptance letter to your counselor. Register for classes at the Georgia college of your choice and coordinate with your Johns Creek counselor to finalize your Johns Creek schedule. Complete the Accel application at in the fall and spring (instructions for completing the application are on the JCHS website). Complete the MOWR application with your advisor where you ll be taking your classes in the fall and spring. Inform your counselor that you have completed the application and let them know which classes you have registered for (counselors will approve the Accel application for the fall and spring in order for the course to be paid for). Purchase any needed books and materials for the course (student pays out of pocket). Order a transcript from the college you are attending when your grades are finalized for your college courses and ensure your counselor receives the transcript (fall and spring). Communicate with friends and check the school website so you don t miss information at school (this is especially important for seniors!).
