1 Credit Flexibility: Update to the Worthington Board of Education April 2013 Dr. Trent H. Bowers

2 Ohio s Plan For Credit Flexibility Designed to broaden the scope of curricular options available to students. Designed to increase the depth of study possible for a particular subject, and allow tailoring of learning time and/or conditions. These are ways in which aspects of learning can be customized around students interests and needs.

3 Students May Now Earn Credits By: Completing coursework Testing out of or demonstrating mastery of course content. Pursuing one or more educational options (e.g., online/distance learning, dual credit, educational travel, independent study, internships, music, arts, after-school programs, community service, or other individualized projects).

4 Credit Flexibility Is Intended To Motivate and Increase Student Learning by Allowing: Access to more learning resources, especially real-world experiences. Customization around individual student needs. Use of multiple measures of learning, especially those where students demonstrate what they know and can do, apply their learning, or document performance.

5 Four Levels of Earning Credit Level One : Primarily Teacher Directed Level Two Level Three Independence Level Four : : : Increased Student Independence Greater Student Direction and Completely Student Driven

6 Level One: Primarily Teacher Directed Traditional Carnegie Units: Teacher directed classes which follow a traditional schedule, and meet every day for one or two semesters. Dual Credit: The ability to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously in a traditional high school class. Dual credit may be offered at reduced college/university tuition, which students can take to college or as articulated credit available at no cost and applicable to specific courses at post-secondary institutions.

7 Level Two: Increased Student Independence Blended Classes: Classes offered partially online and combined or blended with scheduled classroom/lab sessions. Capstone Classes: Projects/products resulting from independent student research and guided by an assigned teacher. Students will meet at specified times with their teacher who will directly oversee completion of the project.

8 Level Three: Greater Student Direction and Independence Online Classes: Classes offered completely online with little or no face-to-face teacher-student or student-student interaction. PSEO: The Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program was created to enable high school students in grades nine through twelve to earn college and high school graduation credit through the successful completion of college courses.

9 Level Four: Completely Student-Driven Independent Study: Independent Study provides an opportunity to further explore subjects of special interest or that have been taken in the regular curriculum. Whether they are working on enrichment or advancement of skills and knowledge, students can expand their learning by connecting with resources both within and outside the High School. Testing Out: One end of semester and/or end of course test can be used to determine a student s level of mastery of the key learning targets for a course. Testing Out + Performance: Performance assessments are required in addition to test activities in order to determine a student s level of mastery of key learning targets for a course.

10 How Does This Play Out in Worthington?

11 Level One: Primarily Teacher Directed In Worthington over 7,000 credits will be completed this year through Traditional Carnegie Units In Worthington Dual enrollment with Central Ohio Technical College is utilized for Honors Chemistry, AP Calculus AB and BC as well as Business. Over 200 credits have be completed this way. In Worthington Project Lead the Way students can access dual enrollment through Sinclair Community College. Over 270 students are eligible for these credits.

12 Level Two: Increased Student Independence Blended Classes Algebra 1, World History, English 1, Physical Science, FAST, Digital Art Worthington has 140 students in these courses currently. Capstone Classes: Engineering Design and Development, EBA Business Internships, Career Mentorship Worthington has 110 students are in Capstone Courses

13 Level Three: Greater Student Direction and Independence Online Learning - Worthington has 240 courses are currently being taken through TRECA online. 50 credits have been completed thus far this school year. Worthington has 12 students earning credit from BYU, Indiana, Northwestern, CCAD or Adventa Learning online. PSEO Worthington has 27 students who partner with Ohio State, Franklin and/or Columbus State to take 42 courses

14 Level Four: Completely Student-Driven Independent Study Worthington has 77 classes are being completed through Independent Study. Demonstration of Proficiency (Test Out) Worthington has 6 applications that have been submitted for a test out option.

15 Worthington Schools Our goal is to meet the needs of individual students and to provide a learning experience that is rigorous and relevant to the lives of our students! The options available to all Worthington students aid in this goal.
