College Credit Plus Lynchburg-Clay H.S. February 26, 2015
CCP/Formerly PSEOP Same basic program, for students Most changes are for high schools and postsecondary institutions
What is the purpose of the program? The program is intended to provide qualified 7 th 12 th grade students academic opportunities and exposure to options beyond the high school classroom.
Steps for entering the program Attend an information session about CCP program. Inform your school your intent to participate by April 1 of school year prior to participation. CCP information will be posted on your high school website.
Steps cont. Postsecondary institutions will have CCP information on their websites. Examples of information on website will include but not limited to, admission criteria and any partnerships with local high schools. Public and private institutions will have different guidelines. CCP program will not pay for any developmental courses. Student must be college ready.
Common Questions Q. Do I have to attend college full time or may I attend part time? A. You have the option of both. Whatever is the best fit for you.
Common Questions Q. How many college credit hours may I take? A. Student attending full time, at the college, may take a maximum 30 semester hours per year.
The number of college credits a student may earn while also taking courses at their high school will be determined as follows: The number of high school courses, X 3, subtracted from 30.
High School Credits being taken Multiply by ? = College Credits available to earn per year 2 2 X 3= = X 3 = = X 3 = = X 3 = = 15
Common Questions Q. How is credit evaluated and transferred? A. 3.0 Semester hrs. = 1 High School Credit
Common Questions Q. Can I take college level courses in the summer and have the cost covered through CCP? A. Students in public schools that do not operate on a 12 month calendar are not eligible for summer courses through CCP.
Common Questions Q. What happens if I fail a class or do not complete the course? A. Your or your parent will be required to pay the cost of the course and the cost of the book. (You will owe your school district, not the postsecondary institution). *Please see your district policy
Common Questions Q. Can I be involved in athletic and extracurricular programs at the high school? A. Yes, but be advised, your schedule at the college will vary semester to semester. * There are guidelines, in regards to how many hours you must have passing grades to remain eligible. The state is currently looking at possible revisions to present guidelines.
Potential Risks College course offerings do not mirror the high school offerings. Scheduling required courses is not guaranteed. Students will have increased responsibility for learning.
Potential Risks Potential for social discomfort as some students may not adjust to the new environment. If a student fails or withdrawals from a college course, they will lose the credit and they will be responsible for the cost of the course and book.
Potential Risks Increased time spent on academics, including online courses. Student may have reduced time for participating in high school activities (athletics, music, band, etc.) Allow enough travel time to and from post-secondary institution.
Potential Risks If a male student turns 18 during their senior year while participating in CCP, they must sign up for Selective Service. If the student fails to sign up, he will be charged out-ofstate tuition. This is on Ohio program, thus causing the student to pay the difference.
Program Advantages An opportunity to take courses not offered at the high school or, in some cases, an opportunity to earn college credit while remaining in your high school. Increased course selection. Students may take classes that academically challenge them or that cover areas of particular interest to them.
Program Advantages Students have the opportunity to earn college credit at no cost, as long as they are successful in the course. Students have a chance to experience college-level work and college life prior to making a final decision about post-secondary education.
How do I begin? Once you have gone through the steps at your home high school, you now need to consider the college requirements. Remember, every college has somewhat different requirements. Inquire with the college of your choice for specific admission requirements.
Southern State Community College CCP Guidelines Counseling with high school counselors. Complete the SSCC/CCP Application. Submit to the Records office along with a copy of your high school transcript.
SSCC CCP Guidelines Guidelines pertain to all students participating in CCP program whether the student is on a SSCC campus or taking the course at their high school.
SSCC CCP Guidelines All CCP applicants must take the SSCC Placement Assessment and score college ready. SSCC uses Accuplacer as a testing tool. The SSCC college ready English score is a 5 or higher. College ready math score is a 90 or higher.
SSCC CCP Guidelines ACT scores will be accepted (in place of placement assessment). ACT English score of at least an 18 or a math score of at least 22, will be considered college ready.
SSCC CCP Guidelines A letter containing testing information will be sent to the student after SSCC has received the students Application for Admission. After the student has completed the placement assessment or provide ACT scores, the student must schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor.
SSCC CCP Guidelines First time CCP students taking courses on a SSCC campus, must meet with a CCP advisor at SSCC to register for their first semester college courses. SSCC will assign all CCP students an academic advisor. It is suggested that students meet with their advisor prior to registration for each semester, but not required to do so after the first semester.
SSCC CCP Guidelines All new students attending SSCC are required to attend a New Student Orientation. Orientation information will be sent after the student has registered for his/her college courses.
SSCC CCP Guidelines Students enrolling in the program will be expected and required to perform at the same level as their college classmates. CCP students are subject to the same policies and procedures, academic practices and grading standards as all other SSCC students. Grading standards pertain to students taking college courses in their high school, as well.
