SHORT BIO Professor of New Media Management, Philip Dean Born Ilford, Essex, UK 1957 Head of the Department of Media, Professor of Media Management, Philip Dean started his career at the University of Art & Design Helsinki as a post-graduate Finnish State scholarship student in 1982 within the department of photography. In the late 1980s, as lecturer in photographic technology, Dean was responsible for the creation of the computer aided photography lab, CAP, which was, at the time, one of the world s first digital imaging labs within the Art & Design higher education sector. Philip Dean led the planning of the Media Lab Helsinki, as a new multidisciplinary department of Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu, and was the lab s Director (later Dean ) from its foundation in 1993 until August 2008. Under Dean s leadership the Media Lab grew to become one of the six schools within TaiK, one of the leading departments of its kind in the field within Europe and was noted as one of the most international university departments within Finnish higher education. As Director of the Media Lab TaiK between 1993 and 2008 Dean has been a pioneer in the development of both multi-disciplinary education and applied research in the area of interactive digital media, its design, content production and production management. Philip Dean has led the Media Lab s activities in many national and international projects, especially within EU Media and framework R&D programmes. He has worked in many expert groups and committees within Finland and internationally. During January-May 2009, as part of sabbatical leave, Dean was visiting scholar within the School of Architecture and Design at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand. After his return to Finland Dean was appointed Director of the Aalto University Media Factory in November 2009. He also led negotiations towards the merger of TaiK s Media Lab with the units of Graphic Design and Photography in late 2009. Prof. Philip Dean was appointed as Head of the new Department of Media, as part of Aalto University s School of Art and Design, as of 1 st January 2010. 9
