7 The value of design Industries can no longer compete on costs. The value-add for organisations and their consumers must be based around design-led innovation. This means a more human-centred approach to solving problems and improving products, services and environments. Good design provides opportunities to develop new products, expand new markets and create an innovative, competitive economy. 7

10 The Creative Industries and future careers The Creative Industries are defined by three broad fields: Arts and Culture Performing arts, visual arts, literary arts, photography, crafts, libraries, museums, galleries, markets, archives, heritage sites, festivals and arts supporting enterprises. Design Advertising, architecture, web and software, graphics, industrial products, fashion and textiles, jewelry furniture, communications, interior and environmental. Media Broadcasting, radio, television and satellite, digital music (including software and computer services), software and interactive content, film and video, recorded music and publishing. 10

11 National contribution The creative sector contributes around $90.19 billion to the national economy annually in turnover. It adds almost $45.89 billion in GDP and helps generate exports of $3.2 billion dollars annually. Percentage share of GDP,

12 The Creative Trident In the 2011 census there were 611,307 people employed in the creative industries. 347,744 people were considered to creative specialists. The overall figure is an increase of 21% since the 2006 census. Almost 40% of employment within creative occupations were related to advertising, marketing and communications. 12

13 National contribution Embedded Creatives are those who work in traditional, non-creative fields. 263,000 people in 2011 were considered embedded creatives. 13

23 What we look for in students Design is no longer an artistic pursuit. Design, art and visual skills help but are a narrow indicator of success in design. It is a serious industry that requires all-round intellectual capability and leadership. It requires people who are visionary and want to change the world through better environments, products, communications, systems and services. It requires people who have empathy with people, who can understand complex problems and find unique ways to solve them. It requires good all round communication skills and people who can work across disciplinary boundaries. 23
