The programme prepares accomplished directors of feature films and audiovisual works in a variety of genre forms. It focuses on the acquisition of theoretical and practical methods and styles of directing ranging from classical film to contemporary media. The programme provides the students with the knowledge necessary for independent creative work in screenwriting and directing in all areas of audio-visual presentation with a high level of individual creativity and authorship. The students are trained to be accomplished screenwriters and directors of fiction films and audio-visual works of different genre forms. The programme focuses on the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge about the methods and styles of directing and screenwriting ranging from the classical film to contemporary media. 13 Editing (Bc.) The students pursue their studies in the Studio of Editing. The programme is designed to provide the students with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for independent creative work in all areas of audiovisual work with emphasis on visual editing. It develops their understanding of the models of the construction of film and television narrative from the perspective of various genre forms. 16 Audio-Visual Studies (Bc., Mgr. art., PhD.) The students pursue their studies in the Department of Art Criticism and Audio-Visual Studies. The programme is designed to provide education for theorists, historians and critics in the fields of film art and multimedia. As well as film analysis, the programme also includes humanities and social sciences. Emphasis is placed on the student s individuality and creativity. The programme provides the students with an in-depth knowledge of the filmmaking process, and of the production, marketing and distribution of the audio-visual work. The students pursue their studies in the Department of Film Production and Distribution and in the Department of Arts Management at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts. The programme provides the students with an in-depth knowledge of film management, and arts and cultural management in general. 19 Visual Effects (Bc.) The students pursue their studies in the Studio of Visual Effects. The programme is designed to train and educate film and television makers of visual effects and creative people working in film and television and other multimedia areas. Emphasis is placed on the mastery of practical skills in graphic and compositing programmes, foundations of filmmaking, knowledge of the dramaturgy of film story and the artistic rendering of image within visual effects of film. 20 Summer School of Film Language The Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts regularly organises a two-week educational programme, the Summer School of Film Language, in July. The programme is designed for the students interested in studying at the Film and Television Faculty. The participants are introduced to the basics of film language and film professions under the supervision of the teaching staff. More information is available at 18
21 5 Credit System The programmes are in compliance with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The credit system enables the students to take an active part in the design of their curriculum and choose the pace of their study. The credit system enhances the exchange of students and guarantees the recognition of studies taken outside the mother institution. 22 6 Academic Year The academic year is divided into winter and summer semesters. The winter semester begins in October and ends in December. A four-week examination period follows in January. The summer semester begins in February and ends in May. The students then work on their practical film exercises and academic year audio-visual projects. It is followed by a fourweek examination period in June. Admission examinations for undergraduate studies for a bachelor s degree are held in February. Admission examinations for postgraduate studies for master s and doctoral degrees are held at the end of June or at the beginning of July. 23 7 Facilities All educational facilities are available at the Film and Television Faculty at 2 Svoradova Street in Bratislava. Apart from classrooms, there is the Centre for Audio- Visual Work (CAT) available to the students of all programmes. CAT provides facilities for practical exercises, student films and also coordinates the use of technology and technical equipment. CAT includes: Office of production activities Department of cinematographic and lighting equipment Department of image and sound recording equipment and special effects animation Film studio (Studio AT-77) with online editing machine Department of sound, production and postproduction equipment Sound recording studio Sound editing and mixing room Non-linear editing rooms authoring DVD finishing room Dispatching, archive and documentation CAT room The latest technical and technological equipment of film production HDD and Blue Ray is available to the students. The Faculty has two cinemas. Apart from screening educational material, they are also used by the school film club FK 35 mm and ÁČKO, the International Festival of Student Films, as well as international events of other film institutions. 21
24 The Faculty publishes Frame, the school magazine, which is a supplement to the theoretical periodical Kino-ikon. The cafeteria on the school premises provides a small assortment of fresh meals. 22
25 8 Festivals and International Activities The Film and Television Faculty is an active member of the International Organisation of Film and Television Schools (Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et Télévision) CILET and its European counterpart GEECT. Renowned Slovak and European representatives of cinematography are regularly invited to give lectures. The films made by our students are regularly presented at major foreign film festivals (Annecy, Angers, Cannes, Hiroshima, Tai-Pei and others). The students organise ÁČKO, the international film festival of students from institutions of higher education. The festival aims to present new films by young filmmakers. It is a platform for the creative comparison with different cinematographic works and training concepts. Since 2011 another important international event has been organised, the Visegrad Film Forum, a meeting place for students from Central Europe. Master classes of renowned filmmakers and specialists in audio-visual work are the main part of this event. 23
26 9 Studies for International Students The language of instruction at the Film and Television Faculty is Slovak and the foreign students interested in studying at the Faculty for a longer period are expected to attend the preparatory language course in Slovakia. Within the Erasmus Programme, the Faculty offers personal tutoring and selected subjects in English. Applicants from the European Union are exempted from tuition frees, applicants from outside the European Union pay tuition fees information is available at the school website This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
