1 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION October 10, 2014 Dear Dean of the Coggin College of Business Search Committee, In response to your recent posting for the Dean of the Coggin College of Business at the University of North Florida, I have enclosed the following materials: Curriculum Vitae Selected Skills and Accomplishments My curriculum vitae and selected skills and accomplishments establish that I have the expertise and experience that will allow me to be successful as the Dean of the Coggin College of Business at the University of North Florida. I have a number of years of administrative experience, including my recent role as Dean of the Stetson School of Business Administration and Director of the Executive MBA Program. Additionally my experience includes development and fundraising activities, managing in a collegial environment, and motivating faculty through the development of a new curriculum and a revised strategic plan. I am known as a Dean who successfully works across campus with our other Colleges and Schools, as well as having the ability to develop a positive relationship with our Business Advisory Board, our community, and our alumni. I have significant experience with AACSB and SACs accreditation and my fourteen years at Stetson reflect my strong commitment to the mission of quality education and financial stability. Throughout my three year appointment as Dean at Stetson, I strive to maintain academic excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, along with excellence in our faculty. Under my leadership, we redesigned our curriculum, in order to maintain the highest quality in our academic programs. We also grew our study abroad programs launched our mentoring program, and utilized the outcomes from our assessment process to improve our academic programs. One reason I was named dean was to ensure, through my leadership, that we achieved AACSB accreditation and our curriculum revision was successful. Our efforts were rewarded with reaccreditation through Redesigning our curriculum and successful reaccreditation remain two of the accomplishments under my leadership that I believe are most valuable. Equally important is promoting and supporting faculty excellence. The school of business did so through our research grants, conference travel support, speaker series, faculty development activities, promoting interdisciplinary scholarship, and technology support. I also just completed a five-year term as Director of our Executive MBA program. During my tenure as director, we revised and strengthened the curriculum, increased enrollment, and enhanced the academic standards of the program. Through my work as Dean and as Director of our Executive MBA program I facilitated increased outreach with the business community which allowed our School of
2 Business Administration to successfully increase collaboration with our business partners. Additionally, during my first year as Dean, I appointed a new Director of Graduate Studies with the explicit mission of increasing graduate enrollment while simultaneously increasing our admission standards and program quality. Our business graduate programs are offered on three campuses (DeLand, Celebration, and St. Petersburg), along with two online MBA programs. Under my leadership we have been successful in increasing enrollment while maintaining academic quality in our graduate programs. My collegial, inclusive, leadership style contributed to success in the activities mentioned above, as well as the accomplishments described on the next page. A successful leader cannot attain these accomplishments on his/her own. A necessary condition of success is the ability to motivate faculty and staff to work toward our shared vision. Using our mission, vision, and strategic plan as a guide, I give credit to our faculty and staff for our accomplishments, facilitated by my motivational leadership style. In our ten page strategic plan, I highlighted three emphasis areasfor this past academic year: excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, faculty development, and internationalization of our curriculum. This past year, these priorities guided our decision-making-process. As I ve worked with my Business Advisory Board, alumni, donors, and the business community, I have also used our strategic priorities as an outline for discussions and fundraising activities. With a clear vision, we achieve the support of our donors and stakeholders. My curriculum vitae details my administrative and service experience, along with my significant scholarship and research accomplishments. With a PhD in Finance, my education and experience has provided the background necessary to successfully manage the $8 million School of Business Administration budget to ensure financial stability and growth of the School. Note that my research stream has continued, even while serving in university administrative roles.additionally I have served as editor of the academic journal, Financial Services Review, for the past six years. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Stuart Michelson, Roland & Sarah George Professor of Finance Past Dean, School of Business Administration, smichels@stetson.edu, (cell)
