Using social media at events Gregor Jones
Time to tweet In the next 30 minutes we will look into the different ways to handle social media pre, during and post events. #NHSgetsocial #NHSgetsocialGreg
Pre-event activity Create a social media strategy Include targets (last year v this year) List key messages Create a list of generic posts/tweets Create a strong #TAG Look into paid/promoted posts Can help raise awareness of your event Will boost bookings Targeting functions Use images to fit more text into your tweet Tips Have a list of @Handles Make sure you have a schedule Use scheduling software
Pre-event imagery
Scheduling software - Why do I need this? Scheduling software allows you to plan and schedule tweets/posts to go out automatically, this gives you the opportunity to plan what you will be doing on the day, while the software promotes your event without you having to do anything. There are two main competitors: Hootsuite Tweetdeck The benefits It allows you to get on with planning the activity on the day of the event Means you can tweet/post on the weekend It means you wont miss any of the key dates if you have them pre-planned
During event activity The day of the event is now upon you, by following the pre-event steps your activity should already be at a high. This means your delegates should be aware of the #TAG and be tweeting already. How to make your event successful Generate conversation by asking your delegates what they are looking forward to Use strong imagery throughout the day Share updates of what is happening WHERE and WHEN Use voxpops to get the audience involved When your #TAG starts trending, let your audience do the tweeting for you. Follow the conversation and input when needed. DON T tweet like you re writing minutes, this will be too intense. Tweet as if you re telling your friend what happened USE THE #TAG in every tweet Have a list of speaker/ exhibitor @Handles Pre-loaded tweets Pre load (save) your tweets before the event so you just need to hit send
The importance of imagery FACT Twitter users like imagery Tweets with images gain 4X more interactions that tweets without. Use an image when: Welcoming the delegates to the event registration When a speaker starts talking, share their image with a tweet of what they are speaking about Images throughout the day of the delegates enjoying themselves Throughout the keynote speaker
CamRanger What is CamRanger Capture images in all drive modes. Then view full resolution images in JPG or Canon RAW and optionally save to an ipad, iphone, ipod Touch, Android device, or Mac or Windows computer.

Post events Your event is now finished, your social media activity SHOULDN T. The event follow-up activity will continue for another few hours and, on some occasions, the whole week after. You will want to: Say thank you to your delegates Share highlights from the day Tweet/post images from the day Send out links to the speakers presentations on the day Keep thanking people if they mention the #TAG or your @HANDLE Share outcomes from the event over the next week Track your activity
Tracking your activity Tracking your activity will help you to see how well your engagement/interactions were on the day. There are many tools to help you track your SoMo action such as #TAG tracking software and basic analytics software #Tracking Will tell you everything you need to know about your #TAG and what happened during its life span. Basic analytics Twitter analytics will tell you basic information about your twitter profile for a specific date range, but wont tell you in-depth activity about your #TAG How this can help Tracking your activity gives you an idea of what worked and what didn t Gives you your targets for next year
Time to tweet #2 Now it s time to tweet using the skills you have learned. We will then compare your first tweet to your new tweet.
