POSITION DESCRIPTION / PERFORMANCE EVALUATION Name: Job Title: Lab/-ray Tech Prepared by: Date: Supervised by: Supervisor of Laboratory Approved by: Date: Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, will perform technical, clerical and phlebotomy functions in the laboratory. These duties include, but are not limited to: assisting medial technologist with processing, and testing to patient specimens, registering patients, processing orders and paperwork, distributing reports, answering phones, taking messages, and performing phlebotomies on all ages of patients. Also under supervisor of the Lab Supervisor, operate radiology equipment to perform diagnostic examinations to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of their patients. Prints, faxes, and distributes patient reports per laboratory policy. Performs necessary clerical functions including registration of courier specimens. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care, based on physical, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service. Greets and receives patients in a friendly manner, demonstrating sensitivity to patient s needs. Communicates information to appropriate areas, departments and individuals, alerts appropriate staff concerning STAT orders. Educates patients and documents appropriately. Assist in care and maintenance of department facilities. Restore rooms and work areas with supplies. Keep work area clean and neat. Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: E G S NI U Demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques and devices as needed for age of patient. Demonstrates safe handling and proper collection techniques to maintain integrity and quality of specimens. Demonstrates correct procedures for labeling, accessioning, and delivering specimens to the proper department. Responds promptly to phlebotomy requests for STATS, ASAP s, NOWS and outpatients with a supportive and cooperative attitude. Restocks phlebotomy trays and procurement areas when necessary. Specimen Testing, Result Evaluation, and Computer Entry Performs and records all required quality control testing, reviews and records, completes corrective action if necessary. Performs required proficiency testing. Performs patient testing according to established policies and procedures. Responds promptly to STATS and NOW s. Organizes and prioritizes workload appropriately. Evaluates, analyzes, and verifies results. Confirms abnormal results. Follows procedures for reporting critical values. Completes all documentation necessary for final release of test results. Generates corrected reports when errors are detected. Performs maintenance and/or troubleshooting procedures. Takes steps to resolve equipment or procedural problems. Inventories reagents and supplies as directed, keeping working supplies stocked, notifies supervisor when supplies are low. Specimen Processing 1 Demonstrates ability to process patient samples for testing. Evaluates specimen quality and integrity and follows criteria for specimen rejection if indicated. Demonstrates ability to process unusual test request for reference laboratory. RADIOLOGY Functions Verify type of radiology examination. Accurately prepare examination room for designated procedures in advance. Determine and affirm patient s identity by comparing information on the examination requisition to requisition. Verbally address the patient personally to verify their identity. 2

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: E G S NI U Explain to patient the procedures prior to performing them. Make sure all corresponding forms are signed when necessary. Maintains patient history file and exam requisition and billing sheets. Transport patients from their room to the department for examination and back to their room, immediately following examinations. Position and immobilize all patients according to departmental guidelines and procedures. Select proper cassette size to achieve optimum image quality for the type of examination to be performed and anatomy being radiographed. Ensure all radiographic images are properly identified and verified with patients name and date. Insure all patients records and files are properly filed. Provide and ensure proper use of radiation protection by all hospital personnel, patients, and self in accordance with hospital and governmental safety standards. Process films according to processing criteria determined by procedures and materials used in performing the examination. Prepare them for reading by radiologist. Possess the ability to learn and perform various examinations within the radiology department. Reviews exposed radiographs for proper positioning, technique, and identification. Adjust technical factors in proportions to patient and body part being examined while minimizing radiation. Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all radiographic equipment within the department. Performs and/or assists with images taken in other areas of the hospital with portable radiology equipment. Accurately log patient exams. Complete and process radiologic charges by end of daily shift. Correctly schedule patient for all services in the Radiology Department. Perform secretarial duties. Participate in required 24 hour coverage of department by following call schedule Monday thru Friday after 5:00pm (1700 hrs.), weekends and holidays. Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state and federal regulations. Adheres to the Group II level of HIPAA Minimum Necessary Standard when using, disclosing or requesting Protected Health Information (PHI). 3

Education/Experience Requirements: High school diploma/ged and ability to train on the job. Prefer previous experience in healthcare and/or graduate of accredited program in radiologic and medical technology. Ability to work cooperatively with physicians, patients, and other departments. Skills: Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Basic computer skills.
