1 NURS 1050 Medical Terminology Course Description This course is a study of the language of the allied health sciences, nursing, and medicine. The meaning and pronunciation of complex words are presented through analysis of word roots, suffixes, prefixes, and combining forms, describing all body systems. Student Learning Outcomes At the conclusion of this course, the student will Define terms and abbreviations which apply to the structural organization of the body. Analyze and identify terms and their components, including prefixes, suffixes, roots, and combining forms. Identify correct pronunciation, spelling, and definition of medical terms. Apply the new knowledge to understanding medical terms in their proper contexts, such as medical reports and records. This course (NURS 1050) is taken through Motlow s D2L system. Assessment and Grading This course is taught over a 15 week semester period. Evaluation will be based upon student participation in the class (discussion
5 board), completion of online homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. Exams and quizzes will consist of a variety of multiple choice questions based on information in the textbook and online modules. The grades will consist of the following: Orientation quiz @ 10 points, Quizzes 1-11@ 20 points each (220 points), 4 discussion board postings @ 10 points each (40 points) 3 homework assignments @ 20 points (60 points), midterm exam @ 100 points and final exam @ 100 points. The total possible points are 530. The final course grade is determined by dividing the total points earned by the total possible points. To determine grade at any time divide the total points earned by the total possible points at that time. Apply the grading scale below: Grading Scale: 90-100 = A (475 530 points) 80-89 = B (422 474 points) 70-79 = C (369 421 points) 60-69 = D (316 367 points) Less than 60 = F (< 316 points) Course Policies Student Conduct See MSCC Catalog and Student Handbook for policies related to plagiarism, cheating, and student rights/responsibilities. Plagiarism is the use of another person's work, whether published or unpublished. Indication of academic misconduct will be investigated and documentation of such may result in failure of the course.
6 Attendance and Participation Attendance for an online class is expected. The student should anticipate spending a similar amount of time for this course as required by an on ground course. The student should plan on logging into the class a minimum of three times a week. Class sessions consist of reading your email, posting discussions, reading the textbook and modules on D2L, completing exercises in the textbook and the modules on D2L, completing and submitting assignments, and taking quizzes and exams. The student is responsible for all material covered and any assignments given with assigned deadlines. Discussion Board Posting The Course Discussion Board is a great place to seek help or ask questions from classmates or the instructor. There is an area for Questions for Instructor and Communication between Students. Please remember postings are viewed by everyone in the class; therefore, if you have a question for the instructor that only involves you or is personal utilize the d2l email. In addition, the content of messages posted should reflect topics in the course, not personal discussions. Use email for personal messages between classmates. There are also discussion board assignments to help you learn more about the topic of the week. These are during weeks 3, 4, 7, and 9. The discussion board for this assignment will open at 0700 on the Monday of the week of the assignment. Each of the 4 discussion board assignments are worth 10 points and will be graded as follows: Explore the topic and post both the information and cite the source or where you obtained your information the course text or module, another text, or a website (3 points)
7 Post your topic information within 3 days of the topic opening by 1000 on Thursdays. ***Note this deadline! This deadline allows several days for discussion to occur. (2 points) Respond to a classmate s posting. I agree, Me, too or similar posts are not acceptable responses. The idea is to have a discussion with each other; therefore, your comment should be thoughtful and bring a new piece of information into the discussion. You may also pose a related question with an answer. Be sure to cite your source. You will lose points if a source is not cited. The source must be a textbook, an article from a reliable source, or information from a reliable website. Wikipedia is not considered a reliable website. Also, personal stories may provide a new point of discussion, but a source supporting that new point of discussion must be included to receive full points. (2.5 points) Class participation!! Respond to more than one classmate! Remember, minimal responses will not receive credit and the same rules as listed above apply!! Again, the idea is to have a discussion about the current topic(s). (2.5 points) Responses to others are due by 1000 on Monday one week after the discussion begins. Your postings must be in your own words. You may quote with citation, but your entire posting should not be quoted or points will be deducted. Webpage citations should be a link to the actual page where you obtained the information, NOT to the general website. Points will be deducted for this! It is essential to cite your sources. Using another s work without citation is plagiarism and a grade of zero will be awarded for the assignment. The Discussion Board postings are a time to interact with others in the class and learn more about different topics. Homework Assignments You may also have a homework assignment. There are 3 homework assignments: Week 3 (Basic Word Structure, Prefixes, & Suffixes), Week 5 (Urinary System), and Week 8 (Cardiovascular System). Each homework assignment is worth 20 points. They may be accessed under the Assessment dropdown menu on the upper left side of the course homepage. The assignments are
8 available now. Each assignment is due by 1000 on Monday following the week that content is scheduled. Click the homework assignment and save it to your computer or jump drive. Open the assignment in your saved file. Complete the assignment. Be sure to put your name in your assignment. Save the assignment and use your name and the name of the assignment in the file name, eg., BoyerTeresa_Urinary Homework Assignment. Points will be deducted if the assignment is not saved in this manner!! Return to the Dropbox and click on the correct assignment file. Below Submit Files click on the Add a File box Click Upload, find your saved file and click on it Once the file is in the box click on the Add box at the bottom of the screen You will return to the previous screen and your file should be directly under the Add a File box. Click on the Submit box at the bottom of the screen (You must click submit or your file will not be saved into the dropbox) The next screen should show what file was submitted and that the file submission was successful. You will also receive an email verifying submission. The email will come from d2lhelp@mscc.edu. Homework assignments must be submitted in Microsoft Word or a grade of zero will be given for the assignment. Quizzes There is one orientation quiz and 11 quizzes for Modules/ Chapters 1&2, 3, 4, 5 & 6, 8&9, 10, 12, 13&14, 15, 16, and 17. Each quiz is composed of 20 questions and is worth 20 points with the exception of the orientation quiz which is worth 10 points. Students will have two attempts on weekly quizzes; the highest score will be placed in the grade book To access the quiz click on the Assessments under the Assessment dropdown menu located on the upper left side of the course homepage.
9 The quizzes will be open on Monday at 0700 and close 1 week later on Monday at 1000. You will have 20 minutes to take each quiz. All quizzes are timed with a 5 minute grace period. This gives you a total time limit of 25 minutes. If something happens with the software or system and the time extends beyond the set minutes, you are expected to stop the quiz at the set time allowed. If you do not stop your quiz at this point (by 25 minutes), you will receive a zero for the quiz. This policy will be strictly enforced! If you have technical problems during the quiz contact the help desk and send the instructor an email reporting your issue and the name of the person you spoke with at the Help Desk. Exams Students are expected to take mid-term and final exams during the scheduled time. You will only have one attempt on exams. Students will have 90 minutes to complete the mid-term and final exams. All exams are timed with a 5 minute grace period. If something happens with the software or system and the time extends beyond the set minutes, you are expected to stop the exam at the set time allowed. If you do not stop your exam at this point (95 minutes total for exams), you will receive a zero. Make-up exams will not be permitted unless extenuating circumstances exist and arrangements are made with the instructor (in advance). Make up exams must be taken within 7 days of the scheduled exam. Late Submissions Although all assigned work must be submitted in accordance with the course schedule, extenuating circumstances can occur in which a homework assignment, quiz, or exam is not submitted on time. When this occurs, the student is to contact the instructor
10 within 24 hours. If the instructor determines that a late submission is appropriate based upon the circumstances, a 5 point deduction will occur for quizzes or homework assignments, and a 20 point deduction will occur for exams. The Discussion Board assignments cannot be made up. They must be completed during the scheduled times or a zero will be earned. Guidelines for Communications Email: Please follow these general guidelines for email communication. Remember, in an online environment judgment by others is based on how you communicate via email or on the discussion board. Always include a subject line which pertains to the subject in the email. Always be professional, using complete sentences, proper grammar, and correct spelling. Do not type in all capital letters. This is the equivalent of yelling! Always sign your name at the end of the email. Remember, without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Please be considerate of others feelings and be careful in wording your emails. Do not send extremely large attachments without prior permission. Use standard formatting and fonts unless necessary to complete an assignment or special communication. Respect the privacy of other class members. Discussions Postings: Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Try to maintain threads by using the Reply button rather than starting a new topic. Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of others' ideas. Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before responding. Remember, without facial
11 expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Please be considerate of others feelings and be careful in wording the postings. Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks. Be positive and constructive in group discussions. Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.
