1 PSYC 270 Abnormal Psychology Credit hours: 3 Course Description: This course provides a balanced approach that acknowledges the variety of psychological perspectives that can be brought to bear on psychological disorders. We will examine a contemporary approach to the symptoms, theory and treatment of these disorders in people. This 3 credit hour course is a survey of the classification, symptoms and etiology (origin) of psychological disorders. The student will examine the major psychopathologies such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, substance-use disorders, and the schizophrenic disorders with a focus on etiology, diagnostic criteria, and treatment approaches. The student will also explore the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual DSM-IVTR and its classification scheme. Prerequisite: 3 credits in psychology. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course you will be able to: Explain what is and is not abnormal behavior Integrate your knowledge and analyze a case study. Identify the diagnostic classification and symptoms of various types of major psychological disorders Discuss the treatments to use with each disorder At the conclusion of this course you will be given a case study in which you will need to use your critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students will be able to select and use appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods to diagnose the disorder, make decisions about treatment modalities, solve behavior problems that may arise, and reach a conclusion or consensus about this abnormal disorder case. Types of Misconduct Improper Online and Blended Course Use An example of improper online and blended course use is having or providing unauthorized outside help when completing online quizzes or assignments. Plagiarism

3 Plagiarism -- The attempt to represent the work of another, as it may relate to written or oral works, computer-based work, mode of creative expression (i.e. music, media, or the visual arts), as the product of one's own thought, whether the other's work is published or unpublished, or simply the work of a fellow student. When a student submits oral or written work for credit that includes the words, ideas, or data of others, the source of that information must be acknowledged through complete, accurate, and specific references, and if verbatim statements are included, through use of quotation marks as well. By placing one's name on work submitted for credit, the student certifies the originality of all work not otherwise by appropriate acknowledgements. A student will avoid being charged with plagiarism if there is an acknowledgement of indebtedness. Examples include: 1. Quoting another person's actual words. 2. Using another person's idea, opinion, or theory, even if it is completely paraphrased in one's own words. 3. Drawing upon facts, statistics, or other illustrative materials -- unless the information is common knowledge. 4. Submitting a paper purchased from a term paper service as one's own work. 5. Failing to accurately document information or wording obtained on the Internet. 6. Submitting anyone else's paper as one's own work. 7. Violating federal copyright laws, including unauthorized duplication and/or distribution of copyrighted material. 8. Student Attendance Regular attendance and completion of all assignments, on time and as scheduled, is important to your success in this course.

4 As your instructor, if I am unexpectedly unavailable and may be delayed in reviewing or correcting assignments, I will notify the class of this as a sign of courtesy and respect. An online student who does not submit class work for ten (10) consecutive calendar days may be dropped from the course. Efforts to contact inactive students are attempted as soon as each semester begins; however, if there is no response from the student and inactivity continues, a drop will be enacted. The following action may be taken regarding irregular attendance: 1) Dropped from a course or program; 2) Course grade may be lowered; 3) Termination of financial aid assistance; 4) Cancellation of registration; 5) Restriction from extra-curricular activities; or 6) Any other judgments deemed necessary. See the entire NDSCS Attendance Policy Updated policy effective Summer 2007 Assignments Please follow the order of units as listed within the Course Navigation area (located at the left). Each unit will build onto the next one and will be accessible according to the posted schedule. Assignments and quizzes within each chapter are due within specified time frames. Please refer to the Schedule for specific due dates. Assignments not completed by the specified deadline but submitted late will have 10% of grade points per day deducted at instructor's discretion. Students must request permission to submit the assignment late, and provide a valid reason.

5 No points will be assigned for incomplete assignments. Be prepared to spend at least four (4) hours per week in the online class, studying, and completing assignments. Submitting Assignments All assignments should be turned in via Dropbox unless otherwise specified. You are strongly encouraged to make hard copies of your assignments and communications with the instructor to avoid losing data in the case of technical issues. At the first sign of problems, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) immediately. It is your responsibility to access the class on another computer in the event of hardware or software problems. If your problems are not cleared up within 12 hours, contact the instructor by telephone to make other arrangements. Student-Instructor Communications While an online class is available 24 hours a day and offers greater flexibility for the student and instructor, keep in mind that your instructor will not be available 24 hours a day. I will check my , voic , and Cyber Office messages on a regular basis, but there may be times when I am unavailable due to other commitments and job responsibilities. I will respond to , voic , or Cyber Office messages as time allows. As a general rule, you can expect your direct question to be answered within 24 hours during week days. Often addresses do not indicate who is sending the message, so when sending an , please include your full name so I know to whom I am responding. Grading Criteria Discussion Grading Criteria: In this class your discussion postings, the learning checks, three

6 case studies and a final project will comprise your grades. Note: There are quizzes associated with the videos and sims, but you are not required to take them and they do not count toward your grade in this course. Discussion Each week you will have a discussion question. Discussions are a key part of the classroom experience. Discussions are worth a maximum of 2 each week; the grading criteria is as follows: Response to discussion questions is at least 100 words in length and responds accurately to all parts of the discussion question Posts on at least three days during the unit week (Initial post is made by Wednesday; final post is not made before Thursday) Interacts substantively with at least two classmates in the discussion posts, expanding the discussion Uses correct sentence structure, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation Supports views with examples and references from our readings (including appropriate reference citations within text and at the end of the discussion post) Learning Checks During weeks 1-15 you will have a Learning Check (quiz) worth a possible 2 each. You will have an hour to complete each Learning Check. Case Studies There will be three case studies, worth 100 points each. You will submit the case studies to the Dropbox.

7 Final Project - Case Summary Your final project will allow you to combine the material you've learned throughout the course into an analysis of a case study. This project is worth 200 points and should be at least 5 pages in length, not counting a cover page and references. The Final Project (Your Analysis) is to be submitted to the dropbox.
