Instructr: Kathy Munz Curse Descriptin EDUC X507: Fundatins f Teaching in Higher Educatin Fundatins f Teaching in Higher Educatin is the first curse in the Humbldt State University's Certificate in Faculty Preparatin: Teaching in Higher Educatin. This 3 unit curse utlines and discusses the practice f university teaching based n educatinal philsphy and thery. Tpics included in this curse relate t successful teaching specific t higher educatin such as the cntent and culture f higher educatin, faculty rles and respnsibilities, teaching styles, instructinal mdels and the use f technlgy based n a strng theretical fundatin linking educatinal thery t practice. Prerequisites A Bachelr's degree r apprpriate prfessinal preparatin in a teaching specialty area is required as a prerequisite and apprval f the instructr. Curse Outcmes Upn cmpletin f this curse, yu will be able t: Understand and apply the meaning f ethics, values, and attitudes as they relate t prfessinal ethics in higher educatin. Articulate a persnal, reflective philsphy f teaching which includes the imprtance f prfessinalism, leadership, and ethics. Describe and analyze a wide variety f mdels and styles used in university teaching. Apply theries f learning and develpment t teaching in higher educatin. Demnstrate varius strategies fr creating and maintaining apprpriate classrm management thery in higher educatin. Identify the rle f technlgy in teaching and learning in higher educatin. Present and discuss issues related t cntent area literacy related t their disciplines. Participate in a discussin f teaching with a faculty member in yur discipline in higher educatin. HSU Learning Outcmes This curse explicitly cntributes t students' acquisitin f skills and knwledge relevant t HSU Learning Outcmes: Effective cmmunicatin thrugh written and ral mdes. Critical and creative thinking skills in acquiring a brad based f knwledge and applying it t cmplex issues. Appreciatin fr and understanding f an expanded wrld perspective by engaging respectfully with a diverse range f individuals, cmmunities, and viewpints. Curse Plicies This curse is ffered nline, ver the Internet using the university's Mdle learning management system. This allws yu t access the curse materials frm a cmputer with any standard web brwser already installed. (Firefx brwser is recmmended fr Macs; Internet Explrer and Firefx fr PCs.)

Students are expected t devte the same amunt f time fr this curse as yu wuld spend in a regular, face-t-face curse. Depending n yur reading and writing skills, yu are expected t spend apprximately 60-70 hurs (5 weeks = 12 hurs per week r 2-3 hurs per day mst days f the week) n this curse. One f the exciting advantages f nline learning is that yu can plan yur class t fit yur schedule. Hwever, it is imprtant t balance this flexibility with yur new respnsibility f scheduling yur wn learning. There are specific required times and dates fr the curse material. Refer t the Tentative Curse Schedule fr mre infrmatin. Academic Hnesty Students are respnsible fr knwing plicy regarding academic hnesty. Fr mre infrmatin, see Academic Hnesty Plicy. After much careful thught regarding academic hnesty in an nline envirnment, I've decided the best way t cnfrnt this prblem is t clarify it with yu befre we begin. Prfessr Bill Taylr frm Oaktn Cmmunity Cllege said it better than I can when he wrte "integrity is imprtant in this curse precisely because integrity is imprtant in all areas f life." It's nt just fr this class that we as learners shuld value academic hnesty but rather learn hw t avid the pitfalls f cheating nw s that we can carry it thrughut ur prfessinal careers. Hwever, it's nt just students wh shuld be held accuntable fr academic hnesty. Teachers and students bth must trust each ther t frm a strng cmmunity f learners. And the grund rules need t be clear fr all wh participate in the learning prcess. Belw is a list f thse grund rules that I hpe will prvide the trust necessary t make this a great learning experience fr us all. What are the grund rules in this curse fr yu, the student? Prepare t the best f yur ability fr every aspect f this curse. Avid cheating yurself with the pprtunity t learn hw t write yur wn thughts: dn't plagiarize. Be sure t give credit where credit is due and cite yur surces. Learning thrugh cllabratin (defined as wrking with r receiving assistance frm anther) is an effective tl used in this class and in yur future emplyment. When I expect yu t cllabrate, I'll make it very clear in the assignment instructins. All ther wrk in this class is t be dne independently. If yu haven't already, read the Humbldt State University Academic Hnesty Plicy t make sure yu understand the cnsequences assciated with vilating the cde. What yu can expect frm me during this curse: I will prepare and review curse materials t be as current and accurate as pssible. I will be available t answer questins r issues that may arise fr yu during this curse. I will try t the best f my ability t prepare yu fr the exams and ther assessments in this curse. I will utilize fair and hnest evaluatin techniques fr each assignment required fr this curse. T the best f my ability, make this a valid and wrthwhile learning experience.

If we all live up t ur academic respnsibilities, this curse will be meaningful fr all wh participate. Please feel free t discuss these pints with me at any time during the curse this semester. Late Assessments Each student is expected t cmplete all curse assignments by the date indicated n the syllabus unless previusly discussed with me. If yu are unable t cmplete an assignment n time, please ntify me either by telephne r email prir t the date. Any persn failing t cntact me befre a due date will nt receive credit. Yu are respnsible fr learning the reading and class discussin material. The assignments are t be cmpleted n an individual basis nt in grups. Student Disability Accmmdatin If yu are eligible fr disability related accmmdatins as per determinatin by ur campus Disability Resurce Center, please cntact me as sn as pssible t discuss these. Our campus Student Disability Resurce Center (DRC) can assist yu with determining eligibility fr accmmdatins and can be reached at: (707) 826-4678, (707) 826-5392 TDD. The SDRC is lcated in the Lwer Library. Add/Drp Plicy Students are respnsible fr knwing the University plicy, prcedures, and schedule fr drpping r adding classes. If yu have enrlled in this curse thrugh Extended Educatin, here is mre infrmatin n adding and drpping classes. Fr thse already enrlled as a matriculated HSU student, the add/drp infrmatin here. Evaluatin Grading Infrmatin Yu will be able t track yur grade thrughut the curse using the "Grades" link in the margin at the right f the curse main page. Yu will be able t track yur exact scres thrughut the curse. If yu have any questins abut yur grade, cntact me prmptly! The grading scale is as fllws: A = 90-100; B = 80-89; C = 70-79; D = 60-69; F = 0-59. Each student is respnsible fr cmpleting reading assignments as well as all ther assignments and activities as specified by the instructr. All assignments shuld be cmpleted t pass the curse. Assignments and papers will be submitted nline. Need instructins fr submitting assignments nline? If yu have prblems submitting yur assignments, cntact the Humbldt State Help Desk (help@humbldt.edu r 707-826-4357) immediately by phne r email t reslve the prblem.

Graded Assignments Assessment Percent f Ttal Grade Time Machine (discussin frums) 50% Teaching Prtfli Autbigraphy Teaching Philsphy Statement Analysis f Yur Teaching and Learning Style Interview with a Faculty Member 50% Time Machine (a.k.a. weekly reflectins and interactins in the discussin frums) Reflecting and discussing is a key cmpnent f learning; it helps yu identify the meaning and value f what yu are learning, and is an imprtant part f becming an effective prfessinal. Yur reflectins and nline discussins will be guided by specific questins but yu are als free t write yur thughts abut persnal experiences and bservatins. In yur reflectins and discussins yu shuld cnnect yur thughts and experiences with the activities and readings in the mdule. These activities shuld prvide yu with exemplars yu can use t develp similar assignments fr yur students. Each discussin pst shuld be a minimum f 150 wrds and writing quality that meets graduate level standards t pass this cmpnent f the curse (shw ff yur writing skills, because discussins are available t all students in the class!). The Teaching Prtfli A Teaching Prtfli is a cllectin f infrmatin abut yu as a teacher, and can serve as a mdel fr yur prfessinal dssier. In general, the Teaching Prfli will display yur beliefs, understanding, attitude, and skills related t teaching, and explain wh yu are as a teacher. Fr this curse, yu will be create the template fr the Teaching Prtfli and include the fllwing: 1. An Autbigraphy (picture is ptinal) explaining yur discipline and prir teaching experience. 2. Yur Teaching Philsphy statement : a clear expressin f yur values and beliefs (philsphy) f teaching and learning, yur cmmitment t teaching and learning, yur teaching style, and reflectins n yur experiences. 3. Analysis f Yur Learning and Teaching Styles. This is an in-depth analysis f yu as a learner and a teacher and includes: Felder and Slmn's Learning Styles Inventry results. A brief statement n hw knwing yur learning styles helped yu becme a better learner. A reflectin n hw yu culd use learning

styles inventries t better adjust yur teaching and learning activities t imprve the learning envirnment fr students. Yur teaching style based n the results f Grasha-Reichmann Teaching Style Survey. Reflect n the cngruity between yur learning and teaching styles and the match with thse f yur students; and the implicatins fr yu as a teacher. 4. Faculty Interview: Discussing teacher in higher educatin allws the sharing f gd teaching practices, prvides new ideas and fresh perspectives regarding teaching, and enhances yur wn teaching skills. Imprtant Tips fr Success as an Online Learner Begin planning nw fr private, uninterrupted time in yur schedule t cmplete the reading and writing assignments--preferably in at least ne-hur blcks ttaling 12 hurs per week. Remember this is nt a self-paced class and it can be easy t fall behind! Check yur email accunt regularly fr updated infrmatin. If yu prefer a different email accunt ther than yur HSU email accunt, be sure t update yur preference using Student Center. Use e-mail fr private messages t the instructr and ther students. The discussin frum is fr public messages. If yu have questins r cnfusin abut an assignment, take actin prmptly! Check the "Questins?" frum t see if yur cncern has been addressed already, and pst yur questin there if yu dn't see an answer. Read directins carefully! Fr psts t nline discussin frums, cnventins f n-line etiquette ("netiquette"), which include curtesy t all users, will be strictly bserved. Curse Materials Required Readings The readings fr this curse are Internet based and embedded in each week under "What the Navigatr's Have T Say." There is n textbk. Minimum Hardware and Sftware Requirements Yu will need access t a cmputer and the Internet. Late mdel cmputers have adequate prcessing capabilities fr nline curses. Fr specific questins abut the technical suitability f yur hme cmputer r laptp, cntact the HSU Help Desk (707-826-4357 r help@humbldt.edu). If yu d nt have a cmputer but d spend time n campus, yu can use any f the cmputer labs during pen hurs. A laptp with wireless capability will prvide maximum flexibility fr accessing the curse when n campus. If yu plan t cnnect t the Internet frm hme, yu will need Internet access. High speed Internet access with a cable mdem r DSL is recmmended. Fr either cnnectin methd, yu will need an Internet Service Prvider (ISP).Yu als will need wrd prcessing sftware (e.g., Micrsft Wrd). If yu need a wrd prcessr, cntact the HSU Bkstre fr reduced pricing n Micrsft Office (includes Micrsft Wrd prcessing sftware) available t registered HSU students. An acceptable alternative is OpenOffice Writer available at n cst. Review dcumentatin n using this MS Wrd

substitute. Free web brwsing sftware can be dwnladed frm the Internet but is usually already installed (e.g., Firefx nly fr Macs; Firefx r Internet Explrer 7 r later fr PCs nly). Attitudes & Technical Skills Required Yu will find that the fllwing attitude will significantly cntribute t yur success in this nline class: A psitive attitude twards technlgy. An pen mind twards nline educatin. Willingness t share yur experiences with thers. Strng writing skills needed fr expressing yurself in the discussin area. Strng analytical and critical thinking skills fr when yu "get stuck". Resurcefulness - dn't be afraid t click n links and explre and ask questins. Time management Online learning requires nly basic technical skills: Cmpetency with file management (fr example, creating a flder n yur desktp, mving files frm ne lcatin t anther, finding a saved file) Internet navigatin skills. Dwnlad plug-ins frm the Internet. Update yur Internet brwser. Send and receive email. Create and save dcuments (e.g., Wrd, PwerPint, Excel). Tggle between tw pen sftware applicatins n yur cmputer. Cpy text frm a wrd prcessing prgram and paste int anther prgram
