T meet this cre missin, the department: a) educates students in cmmunicatin sciences and disrders; b) serves cmmunities by develping and implementing methds t prevent, identify, assess, and treat cmmunicatin disrders and by preparing speech-language pathlgists and audilgists fr clinical careers; c) cntributes t ur understandings f the bilgical, cgnitive and scial aspects f cmmunicatin abilities and disabilities thrugh faculty research prgrams and by preparing the next generatin f researchers in the brad field f cmmunicatin sciences and disrders. In additin, SHS cntributes t the educatinal and schlarly effrts f the campus thrugh general educatin curse fferings, research that spans multiple disciplines and engagement bth acrss campus and within the lcal, reginal, state and natinal cmmunities. Highlights: The University f Illinis Speech Clinic, which perated within the Department f Speech Cmmunicatin in the late 1930s, was ne f the first prgrams f its kind in the cuntry. The Department f Speech and Hearing Science, frmally established in 1973, currently has ver 40 faculty and academic staff, including 19 full-time tenure track faculty, with a student bdy f abut 300 undergraduate majrs and 70 graduate students each year. Hused in tw buildings, the department ffers fur degrees (BS, MA, AuD, and PhD), including tw ASHA-CAA accredited pre-service training prgrams (fr audilgists and speech-language pathlgists), and a series f American Sign Language (ASL) curses that meet the university s freign language requirements.

The mst recent U.S. News and Wrld Reprt Departmental Rankings listed the clinical master s prgram fr speech-language pathlgists as 11 th and the clinical dctrate fr audilgists as 29 th in the cuntry. Graduates f the PhD prgram have accepted pst-dctral fellwships, and faculty and administrative psitins in institutins arund the wrld. Structure and Budget: The Department f SHS perates under the directin f a Department Head in cnsultatin with faculty, including prfessrs, assciate and assistant prfessrs, instructrs, lecturers and academic staff. Cnsistent with the shared gvernance plicies f the University f Illinis, the SHS bylaws utline departmental administrative rganizatin and prcedures, which serve t supplement the Bylaws f the Cllege f Applied Health Sciences, the Statutes f the University f Illinis, and specific actins f the Bard f Trustees. Faculty are invlved in departmental administratin thrugh the faculty-elected Advisry cmmittee, fur appinted standing cmmittees (Admissins, Educatin Plicy, Prgram Plicy, and Research and Grant Writing), and adhc cmmittees as needed. Daily peratins are managed by the Department Head, the Assciate Head, the Prgram directr, and by departmental and cllege supprt staff. The department head stewards a general perating budget f apprximately $2,000,000 per year based upn tuitin revenue frm majrs and curse enrllments, with additinal targeted funding brught in thrugh external grants, endwments and unrestricted gifts, and clinical revenues. T accmmdate the diverse needs f different research prgrams, research labs fr SHS faculty are hused arund campus, including in the SHS building, Huff Hall, Beckman Institute, and Engineering. Faculty research is funded thrugh internal mechanisms (e.g., Campus Research Bard), and cmpetitive grants frm majr fundatins (e.g., Autism Speaks; ASHA) and federal agencies (e.g., NIH; NSF; Department f Educatin; Department f Defense). SHS faculty are actively invlved in interdisciplinary cllabratins and research prjects with faculty frm ther departments (e.g., Engineering, Linguistics, Kinesilgy, Psychlgy, Special Educatin, English) and hld affiliate appintments with ther units and prgrams n campus (e.g., Psychlgy,
Beckman Institute fr Advanced Science and Technlgy, Graduate Prgram in Neurscience). Clinical Prgrams, Outreach, and Research: SHS clinical instructrs, wh hld ASHA certificatin in audilgy r speech-language pathlgy, prvide pre-service practicum pprtunities fr graduate students by maintaining clinical caselads within the department s audilgy and speech-language pathlgy n-site clinics, and by arranging external placements with cperating clinicians at ver 50 institutins lcally and acrss the cuntry. Thrugh the Audilgy Clinic, instructrs and graduate students prvide diagnstic and rehabilitatin services t children and adults, including assessing, fitting and dispensing hearing aids and assistive listening devices. Instructrs and students prvide a wide range f n-site diagnstic and individual and grup therapy services, and cntract services in area schls. Bth clinical sites have been recently remdeled with state-f-the art facilities and equipment designed t meet clinical and research gals. Awards, Recgnitins and Prfessinal Activities: Curses in Speech and Hearing Science are taught by members f the faculty wh bring their expertise and persnal cmmitment t the classrm creating a learning envirnment where student initiative is encuraged. Semester ratings by students place the curses and instructrs in the department well abve campus averages. SHS faculty and instructrs have been recgnized with AHS Cllege and Campus Awards fr Excellence in Teaching, the Campus Award fr Excellence in Public Engagement, and received Prvst's Initiative n Teaching Advancement (PITA) funding t supprt curse develpment. SHS faculty have been awarded Graduate Cllege Fcal Pint Grants fr prjects designed t stimulate intellectual cmmunities f faculty and graduate students arund imprtant issues and prblems f ur times, and have been recgnized by ASHA fr cntributins t the field. SHS faculty als serves n editrial bards fr prfessinal jurnals and n natinal review panels. Cllege f Applied Health Sciences The Department f Speech and Hearing Science is ne f three departments situated within the Cllege f Applied Health Sciences (AHS), http://www.ahs.illinis.edu/. In additin, the Cllege f AHS huses the Divisin f Disability Resurces and Educatinal Services (DRES), the Center n Health, Aging, and Disability, and the newly appinted Center fr Wunded Veterans in Higher Educatin.
