who are we and why support us? We bring opportunities and hope to children who are destitute and rejected. But for us to be able to do this requires your help. We are all capable of doing a little to change a lot. Let's work together to make a difference! We are Scottish Love in Action (SLA), a Scottish Charity that supports nearly 600 destitute children in India. We provide funding to a grass roots non-government organisation (NGO) partner who runs two Home-cum-Schools in Tuni and Hyderabad. The children we support are aged from newborn to 18. Usually they come to us after a traumatic experience, such as the death of both parents. Some have been rescued from beggar masters, house slavery, bonded labour or child prostitution. We provide them with a secure home giving them shelter, food, clothes, medicine and education which brings them security, dignity and love. Once the children turn 18 we try to ensure that as many of them as possible will continue in further education and achieve a degree or vocational qualification which gives them independence in adult life and enables them to escape the poverty trap.. Over 72 million children in the age group 5 to 14 years in India are deprived of basic education and have no opportunity of going to school. (UNSCO)

what you can do to help... ducating the children is the most important thing we can do to transform their chances in adulthood. Can you help us? It may be something a class, a year group or an entire school might like to do. You can be sure that the money you raise will go towards the cost of teachers salaries, books, paper, pens, other teaching resources and general school maintenance. This is what your money could buy: 6 provides education for one child for one month 72 provides education for one child for one year 360 provides education for five children for one year 720 provides education for ten children for one year 2,160 provides education for an entire class of 30 children for one year

what you can do to help us... FUN- D- RAISING IDAS There are many ways to become involved in helping us to help the children in Tuni and Hyderabad. Fundraising is Fun but also enterprising. ncouraging an enterprising attitude is one of the themes that permeates A Curriculum for xcellence. N T R P R I S xercise: sponsored aerobics, walking, running, hopping and so many other ideas Newsletter run by pupils and sold for a small amount Tuck shops run on a regular basis - they can be healthy too! very child makes a contribution on non-uniform days Rice Relay see overleaf for SLA s Sponsored Rice Relay Challenge Parents helping with home baking, toy and clothes stall at fetes Regular giving throughout the year e.g. a Friday collection Involving children so they know what the term Responsible Citzen means in a world context Support a child through our CLASSMATS sponsorship scheme nterprise activities making goods to be sold at a fair A Curriculum for xcellence and Us The purpose of A Curriculum for xcellence is encapsulated in the four capacities, one of which is enabling each child to be a responsible citizen. Understanding different beliefs and cultures is an important part of achieving this. The important theme of international education is now built into the experiences and outcomes across the new A Curriculum for xcellence. Learning about, understanding and working with children who live in different countries is, therefore, a vital part of each child's education.

WHAT W CAN DO TO HLP YOU... It is essential for young people in our society to become aware of just how different and fragile the lives of destitute children are in other parts of the world. It is also important for them to know that their actions can make a difference. It doesn't take a lot of effort - do a little and change a lot! If you think you might like to help us, here are some of the ways in which we can support your efforts: W CAN >> Offer you an assembly for all or some of your pupils Give ideas and guidance for fundraising LT US HLP! Talk to your charity committee Provide lesson plans (Downloadable from SLA website) "We had a day full of fun, laughter and action! At the same time not only did we raise an incredible amount of money but the boys and girls at our school have learnt so much more about the lives of children in India." Kate Wilson, Deputy Head at participating school. TAK TH RIC RLAY CHALLNG! If your school would like to do a unique fundraising event why not take part in SLA s sponsored rice relay challenge! NW VNT! Keep filling a large container with rice in an allotted time and see how many children in India can be fed. We ll provide the rice (plastic), marked containers, jugs and sponsor sheets. This event can be for the whole school or a class challenge. See our website for full details of how to run this event. www.sla-india.org/fundraise/ricechallenge

59.7% of boys and 60.6% of girls drop-out of school before the end of 10th class (equivalent of 4th year in Scotland) in the ast Godavari district in which Tuni Home-cum-school is. This is tragic. If children do not pass their 10th year exam they are deemed illiterate by the Indian Government and are never able to obtain a bank loan. (Source: Statistical Abstract of Andhra Pradesh 2007, p86, issued by the Directorate of conomics and Statistics, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad). more about SLA We started in 1999 with the visit of a group of young people from dinburgh, between the ages of 16 and 21, who had raised 28,000 to build a home for 120 destitute children. The plight of these children inspired some of us to set up a Charity in 2000 to provide ongoing support for the children. Now we support around 600 children. our vision Our joint vision with our NGO partner is to provide each child with the life skills and education necessary to develop their potential, to lead independent lives and to realise their dreams thus escaping the poverty trap for themselves and future generations.
