ABSORBING INCREDIBLE INSPIRE CAPTIVATING AND CHALLENGE YOUNG READERS UNFORGETTABLE ORIGINAL GRIPPING ShadoW the 2015 Awards Shortlists announced 17 March Winners announced 22 June A guide to shadowing. Join today. It s simple, adaptable and free! Register:
What is the shadowing scheme? Every spring, CILIP: The Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals invites reading groups in libraries, schools, homes in fact anywhere there are children and young people and books, to register for the shadowing scheme. Children and young people shadow the judging process for the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Children s Book Awards; they read, discuss and review the books on each shortlist selected by CILIP s panel of Librarian judges and engage in reading related activity online. Young people taking part are known as shadowers. Now in its 21st year, the scheme has over 5000 registered reading groups across the UK engaging up to 100,000 children and young people in reading. Reading activity takes place from March to June; from the moment that the shortlists are revealed to the final winners announcement. The shadowing process is supported by a dedicated website: CILIP works with specialists to create reader development and visual literacy activities to accompany every book on the shortlist. In addition ALCS, the Authors Licensing and Collecting Society provide copyright awareness activity packs, Renaissance Learning provide Accelerated Reader quizzes and Brown s Books for Students are the official book supplier. (L-R) Presenter Mishal Husain, Chair of 2014 Judging panel Helen Thompson, 2014 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal Winner Jon Klassen, 2014 CILIP Carnegie Medal Winner Kevin Brooks, CILIP President Barbara Band. 2
THE SHORTLISTED BOOKS The shadowing scheme encourages young people to read, enjoy and interact with the very best in children s publishing. Outstanding literary or artistic quality are at the heart of the criteria designed by the librarian judges and this results in a wide ranging, varied and challenging shortlist of quality books for young people to read each year. From the moment the shortlist is announced on 17 March 2015 young readers can begin the process of reading books, engaging in discussion in their shadowing groups and tracking activity online. Ahead of the official winners announcement on 22 June 2015, shadowing groups have the opportunity to select their own favourites online. Book supply in 2015 Shadowing group leaders arrange their own supply of books and we are delighted that Browns Books for Students are the sole official book supplier for the 2015 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway shadowing Scheme. Browns have a long established reputation as a respected major book supplier to nursery schools, primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and public libraries with over 4,500 customers throughout the UK and internationally and over 16,000 registered teachers, librarians, bursars and heads of departments using their online services. As an umbrella supplier Browns covers every single publisher in the UK and carries the largest stock available from all major publishers. Browns have been working in partnership with the National Literacy Trust for a number of years, supplying approximately 30,000 children s books each year to NLT projects held around the UK in public libraries, primary and secondary schools. Browns Books for Students offer shadowing group leaders a discount of 30% off the RRP for all shortlisted titles and one year s free subscription (normally 500 pa.) to their ebook platform, VLeBooks, to groups placing their first order. To take advantage of this discount, we recommend you purchase books from or by calling Browns Books for Students customer care department on or visit to fill in the form online. Orders received on or before 17th March 2015 will be dispatched to arrive on shortlist announcement day. 3
HOW SHADOWING WORKS Shadowing is flexible; group leaders can decide how they want to run their own scheme. The simplest way is to work with a small group, reading and swapping the shortlisted books, meeting regularly to discuss progress and encouraging readers to review and post online to their group homepage. Group leaders can choose to shadow either the Carnegie or Greenaway shortlist, or both. They can follow the whole shortlist with their group, or choose a selection of books from the list to work with, depending on age range, content and suitability for their group. To encourage participation we provide all registered group leaders with a FREE publicity pack including bookmarks, posters and stickers to arrive shortly after the shortlist announcement. Once registered online group leaders can: Access an online portal to approve and manage group book reviews for the website. Manage a unique group homepage for their shadowing group. Download publicity material including certificates, bookmarks and posters. Download Reader Activities & Talking Points Download Visual Literacy Activities Download exclusive video content featuring shortlisted authors and illustrators Access fun, motivational Accelerated Reader quizzes and ALCS copyright activities. Help their shadowing group create their own shadowing magazine Access support for publicity and advocacy CELEBRATE THE BEST IN CHILDREN S LITERATURE BY LEADING A SHADOWING GROUP IN YOUR SCHOOL OR LIBRARY. SIGN UP as a group leader VISIT: 1. Pick a name for your group (something your shadowers will remember) 2. Register your new group for free at: 3. Receive confirmation of your login details, then log on as a group leader and download a guide to the website. 4. Explore your customisable group homepage and plan activities using the online resources. 5. That s it - you will automatically receive regular updates and a publicity pack. 5 Promoting a reading culture Shadowers meet 2014 CILIP Carnegie Medal Winner, Kevin Brooks and 2014 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal Winner, Jon Klassen Shadowing encourages children and young people to read more widely than they might usually, introducing them to new and more demanding literature and illustration. Young people engage in an intense period of reading and vibrant discussion in a supportive environment through which they gain confidence and communication skills. The scheme fosters a sense of community formed around reading - helping to enrich and reinforce a reading culture. ICT skills are also developed through use of the website which offers opportunities for young people to use technology to support their enjoyment of reading. Shadowers can: Post their own reviews and comments about books and read those of their peers. Watch video clips of shortlisted authors and illustrators talking about their work. Read about authors and illustrators and post questions. Interact with other shadowing groups. Customise a unique Group Homepage for their shadowing group where they can create their own polls, produce a group video, contribute to the Greenaway Gallery and more. Explore past winning titles in The Living Archive. Complete fun, motivational, Accelerated Reader quizzes on the shortlisted books Learn about the importance of copyright with creative activities from ALCS. Design a unique shadowing group magazine. Enter competitions and win prizes! A recent poll of shadowers revealed: 89% think Carnegie and Kate Greenaway shortlists introduce them to new books they otherwise might not have read 70% talk to their librarian more when reading the shortlists 79% say reading and discussing the books on the shortlists makes them think more about the books they read. 88% tell us they read in their spare time and in the evenings. 6 Our supporters A special thanks CILIP is grateful to have received support from a number of organisations over the years. We would like to thank the Authors Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS), Carnegie UK Trust, Renaissance Learning and Browns Books for their continuing support. On behalf of everyone at CILIP Thanks very much! ALCS Encouraging creativity among young people Downloads ALCS has developed a set of information downloads and activities that explain copyright and engage with young people to help them understand why they need to value and protect it. These packs are available for free at: They also give guidance to educators on the importance of copyright and include packs for students of varying ages to use, learn from and enjoy. ALCS Shadowing Competition ALCS represents the interests of writers and for this years competition they need shadowers to become journalists! They want shadowers to explain why reading is important to them. The piece of writing should also highlight the importance the writer plays in this role. The word limit is 300 words and the winning submission will be used in the ALCS newsletter which is sent electronically to many thousands of their writer members and will also appear on the ALCS website. Visit: for more information. To remind shadowers of some of the excellent past Carnegie medal winning books as well as letting them know more about copyright, which is vital to writers to help them make a living, use this activity sheet: 6
Renaissance Learning producers of Accelerated Reader Accelerated Reader (AR) is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing reading practice. Accelerated Reader has been found to increase the reading age of pupils by 3 additional months in just 22 weeks, according to the results of a randomised controlled trial published by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). Low-income pupils benefited even more, with their reading age improving by 5 additional months in the same amount of time. Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) Students of all ages and abilities find AR reading practices quizzes motivational as well as fun, responding to the regular feedback provided by the programme. Children and young people who use Accelerated Reader (AR) tend to enjoy reading more, do it more often and think more positively about reading than their peers who do not use AR. They are also more likely to see a link between reading and their success. Dr Christina Clark, National Literacy Trust Learn more about Accelerated Reader at: renlearn.co.uk/ckg At Renaissance Learning we are proud to continue our association with CILIP and support for the UK s most prestigious children s book awards. As part of that support we will again be producing mini AR quizzes on many of the shortlisted titles for the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway medals, which will be available directly from the CKG Shadowing Site. 8 About the awards The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are Britain s oldest and most respected book awards for children. The CILIP Carnegie Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children and young people. For over 70 years the Carnegie medal has encouraged the publication of quality books for children and young people. The medal is named after Scottish born philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, who played a crucial role in establishing many public libraries. The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people. It was set up in 1956 and is named after the English artist and illustrator, Kate Greenaway. The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are the only children s book awards in the UK judged by librarians. Every year a judging panel of 12 children s librarians, from CILIP s Youth Libraries Group (YLG), use their expertise to select the shortlists and winners for each Medal, following nominations from librarians across the UK. Drawing on the grass roots skills and knowledge of librarians, this democratic, consultative process is one of the main reasons that the integrity of the awards is so highly regarded. About CILIP CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals is the leading professional body for librarians, information specialists and knowledge managers.
