2 Impact Africa is bringing hope to orphaned and underprivileged children in the poverty stricken areas of Johannesburg through Impact Kids Preschool and Community Care Centres. Johannesburg is one of the most prosperous and wealthy cities in its region, yet extreme poverty and absolute deprivation can be found just around the corner in any one of the many squatter camps scattered throughout the city. Approximately 450 children every day are orphaned in areas like these due to HIV/AIDS. The harsh realities of squatter camp life breed hopelessness and despair. One of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing residents of squatter camps is education. South Africa estimates that 4.7 million of its people are totally illiterate (never attended school). Another 4.9 million are functionally illiterate (adults who left school before Grade 7). An African female born in South Africa has a greater likelihood of being raped than learning to read.

3 A report released this year, by South Africa s Board of Education indicated that, Children are poorly prepared to enter school (first grade) because Early Childhood Education is so weak and underresourced. The analysis confirms that the greatest need for support lies in the largely rural and the poorest communities. Research shows that up to half of an individual s capacity to learn has been established by age four. Statistically, the school drop out rate of children is reduced by 60% if they attend preschool. Education of the young is imperative and an investment in the future of a community, a people group, and ultimately an entire country. 4 The goal of Impact Kids Preschool is to reach and educate the underprivileged, orphaned and at-risk children, with quality, caring Christian education. Since, February 2010, the first successful and fully functionally location, has been thriving in Kya Sands Squatter Camp, home to 18,000 Africans. Impact Kids Preschool and Community Care Centre is a proven successful reproducible African model. Our goal is to continue to expand, launching sites in informal settlements throughout Southern Africa. These centres are a prime example of NGO s, local churches, corporate businesses and communities working together to create a solution to these devastating circumstances in South Africa. Impact Kids is a place of refuge, love and hope for children where they receive quality education in a stable and safe learning environment.

5 Emphasis is on the Preschool and Kindergarten level to capture the little ones from an early age. The curriculum used at Impact Kids focuses on the development of the children s cognitive, adaptive, social, behavioral, gross and fine motor skills. Core subjects included but not limited to are: Health: proper eating habits, food groups, and exercise. Hygiene: proper cleansing, caring for the injured and sick. Life style of purity: value of choosing proper friends, mutual respect of persons and property. HIV/AIDS: awareness and prevention. There is no cause which merits a higher priority than the protection and development of children, on whom the survival, stability and advancement of all nations and, indeed, of human civilization depends. 6 With the overwhelming needs of the residents of these communities there are endless opportunities to make an impact through practical ways. Here are some of the ways we increase our touch points to the entire community: Free Aftercare Programs. Adult courses offered include subjects such as: HIV/AIDs Teaching English Job and Skills Training Parenting Skills Discipleship and Women s Bible Study Job creation for residents. The facility serves as a crisis relief centre aiding in the response of local disasters. Community Feeding Centre. Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Nelson Mandela
