2012 Runner s Guide LIVE SURVIVE THRIVE Welcome to the 2013 AF Canyon Half Runner s Guide. Thank you for participating in our race this year. We think it s pretty neat that 100 percent of your race fees go towards the great cause of helping people right here in our community fight cancer. Thanks for your contribution! The following information should answer most of your questions about the event. If, after reading through this guide, you still have questions, please email us at afcanyonhalf@imail.org. You can follow us on Facebook for updates (facebook.com/afcanyonhalf), or visit our website at www.afcanyohalf.com. Good luck with the rest of your training. We ll see you on June 15! Presented by:

Packet Pickup Pick up your packet (which includes your bib, timing chip, race shirt, and other SWAG) on Friday, June 14 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at American Fork High School, located at 510 North 600 East, American Fork. Make sure to bring a valid ID. You may present a signed note and a copy of a friend s ID to pick up their packet for them. SelectHealth, one of our generous sponsors, will have cheer cards available for your family and friends to decorate and use on race day to cheer you on. Thanks, SelectHealth! Parking On race day, you may park in any of the parking lots south of the high school, including the vehicle driving range and LDS church lot. *Please reference the parking map at the end of this document Bus Ride All runners are required to ride buses to the start line. You must show your bib to get on a bus. Buses will begin departing American Fork High School at 4 a.m. The last bus will depart American Fork High School at 4:45 a.m. sharp. Buses will load west of the parking lot on 600 East. If you miss the bus you will not be able to run. It is critical we have an ontime start, so please come early and enjoy watching the sunrise over the Wasatch Back. DO NOT BE LATE! Early Bird Promotions The first 500 people to board the buses will be given a free pair of disposable running gloves. All runners who load the bus by 4:15 a.m. will be entered into a drawing for: One of two Garmin Forerunner 10 GPS watches Kindle Free entries into next year s AF Canyon Half SWAG Each runner will receive a performance shirt (men s and women s sizing), finisher medal and half marathon window decal. Additional SWAG will be provided in participant bags. Starting Area Tibble Fork Reservoir, American Fork Canyon The starting area is in the parking lot of Tibble Fork Reservoir up in American Fork Canyon. We will have a portion of the parking lot reserved for a holding area. Please help us keep this area beautiful by not walking on the surrounding vegetation. KSL s Greg Wrubell will be our starting area emcee. He ll help us share some great stories and announce our prize drawings until the race starts promptly at 6 a.m. Those who win a prize at the start line can retrieve their item after finishing the race. As mentioned previously, do not attempt to drive to the starting area as it will be closed to traffic. Timing The half marathon will be chip timed. Your time will start as you cross the starting line (so it won t matter if you re in the back of the pack!) and stop as you cross the finish line. However, the first five overall male and female finishers will be determined by gun start time. (Gun time records the elapsed time from the sound of the gun to the race finish line.)

If you think you may be a top finisher in the overall male or female category, please be sure to begin close to the actual start line at the gun shot start. All other awards will be determined by chip time. The timing chip will be attached to the back of each runner s bib. Runner bibs must: Be attached to the front of the runner s shirt Be displayed to board the bus (each runner will be checked for a number upon boarding) Not be altered or tampered with Course Closure/Cut-off Time During the event, the westbound lane from the mouth of American Fork Canyon to Tibble Fork Reservoir will be closed to motorized vehicles from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. All runners are required to be out of the canyon by 8 a.m. (The canyon is the first seven miles of the course. This means you must be averaging at least a 16-minute mile pace to be out of the canyon by 8 a.m.) Any remaining runners will be picked up by the sag wagon and brought to the finish line. The entire course will close to runners at 10 a.m. Safety Because SR 92 (the stretch of road from the mouth of American Fork Canyon to the turnoff to Tibble Fork Reservoir) is a narrow canyon road, traffic crews will close one lane of traffic until the mouth of American Fork Canyon. Whether in the canyon or anywhere else on the course, please run with extreme caution to ensure your safety. Please stay in the westbound lane. Any runners who run outside the marked cones in the canyon may be disqualified. Participants run at their own risk. Clothing/Gear Bags The bag you receive at packet pickup will be labeled with your bib number and will act as your gear bag for collection at the start line. The vans carrying these bags down to the finish line will leave at 5:50 a.m. Please have your items secured in your gear bag and dropped in the vans before the scheduled departure. There will be a clothing drop off bin at the first aid station. Any clothing or other items left at the drop off bin, and along any part of the course route, will be considered a charitable donation to Deseret Industries. Volunteers will not be able to keep track of clothing or other items left along the route or aid stations for runners at the finish line. Course Temperature Timpanogos Cave Parking Area Temperatures June July Min 50 57 Average 66 74 Max 82 91 Pacers Back by popular demand, we will have pacers to help you maintain your speed and meet your half marathon timing goal. Pacers will hold signs above their heads with the time of their expected finish time. The times below are the target finish times we ll have available with our pacers: 1:25, 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55, 2:00, 2:10, 2:20, 2:30 Course Description The race will start promptly at 6 a.m. at Tibble Fork Reservoir. When the gun fires

participants will begin their run down American Fork Canyon with stunning views of the North and Boxelder peaks. The course will follow the river as it winds down American Fork Canyon. As runners exit the canyon, they will run along a paved trail through Cedar Hills Golf Course. The trail continues past Lone Peak High School, and drops into Highland Glen Park. The course then continues down the Alpine highway, and turns past Fox Hollow Golf Course. The final mile winds through American Fork neighborhoods, finishing at American Fork High School. (Please note: Construction is taking place near the finish line at AF High School. Please be courteous and follow signage to stay out of designated areas. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we do our best to work around this for our event.) As you make your way through the course, please help us keep the canyon clean. DO NOT LITTER. Do not take a bathroom break unless in a designated bathroom portal (see locations below).
