1 GUIDE FOR PARTICIPANTS VARALA MARATHON GENERAL INFORMATION Check that your details are correct in the list of participants. It can be found at our web site: Check also that your payment has been registered. If there is something wrong send immediately to ARRIVAL TO VARALA SPORTS INSTITUTE Marathon Center Marathon Center is located in the Varala Sports Institute at the address: Varalankatu 36, Tampere. Location on the map. Public transport We recommend you to use public transport to get to Marathon Center in Varala. Bus number 25 is driving to Varala about from two to three times per hour. Check the schedule from Tampere Public Transport website. Parking during the marathon weekend Parking is not possible in the surroundings of the Marathon Center. Closest parking lots are close to Scandic Hotel Rosendahl. Take a look at the enclosed map. BEFORE THE RACE Picking up your bib number Marathon office is located in the building named Kalliola at Varala Sports Institute. You can see the exact location on the enclosed map. There you will receive envelope which includes your race number, safety pins, chip, instructions how to attach the chip and Varala Marathon running shirt. Marathon office Marathon office is open: on Saturday 31 August at and on Sunday 1 September at You need to pick up your bib number latest one hour before the start. If you decide to join the race on Sunday you can do it until 1,5 hours before the start of the race. We accept only cash at the marathon office. Marathon expo There will be a small marathon expo at the marathon office. Our partners are having running related equipment and stuff on sale there. The expo will be open on Saturday at and on Sunday at Dressing rooms & cloak room There are dressing rooms just next to the marathon office and also in the main building of Varala Sports Institute. Do not leave any valuables in the dressing room. You can leave your personal stuff in the bag in the marathon office. You will get your bag back after the race showing your race number. Cloak room is open on Sunday at Timing Times will be measured exclusively using the ChampionChip, a plastic transponder attached to a runner's shoe to record individual time. Organizers will remove the chip after the competitor has crossed the finish line. START Start of the marathon and marathon relay Start of the half marathon Start of the quarter marathon Warm up will take place 30 minutes before each start. The pace keepers of marathon and half-marathon will be introduced 15 minutes before their start. After all, you need to be at the start area 15 minutes before the start. For your safety, please follow traffic guidelines and organizers instructions. At some point, organizers might need to let cars pass the road before the runners. In such case runners might need to slow down a bit.

2 THE ROUTE You can see the exact route on the enclosed map. The route is quite easy and it goes along walkways whenever possible except in the start/finish on Varalankatu street which will be closed from the traffic. The starting and the finishing leg from Varala to the Tahmela park is about 0,95 km. Basic leg (from Tahmela park) is 9,6 km and marathon runners will run it for four times, half marathon runners will run it for two times. Runner needs to take care by himself of running enough laps. During the marathon s first leg marathon runners need to run an additional leg which is 1,7 km long. Officials will guide runners to the right direction. 1/4 marathon will be 11,5 km. Route has been marked with chalky line and red tapes. There are kilometer signs along the route. Signs for marathon runners are written in black: Signs for half marathon runners are written in red: Exchange point is at Tahmela Park. See the location on the map. The length of the leg varies as follows: 1. Leg from the Start until exchange is 12,4 km 2. Leg is a basic leg of 9,6 km 3. Leg is a basic leg of 9,6 km4. Leg is a basic leg of 9,6 + route to the Finish at Varala Sports Institute 10,7 km The relay runner of the first leg will also need to run a short additional marathon runners leg. Pace keepers We have pace keepers for the following target times: Marathon: 4.00, 4.15, 4.30, 4.45, 5.00 and 5.30 ½-Marathon: 1.35, 1.45, 2.00, 2.15 and 2.30 Pace keepers will be introduced before the start. Service stations We have three service stations along the route. They are marked with corresponding signs on the map. They are named according to their location: Vaakkolammi, Rahola, Tahmela. There will be Squeezy sports drink, juice, water, bananas, raisins and pickled cucumber available. Own drinks If you would like to use your own drinks during the race, you need to leave them to the marathon office at at the latest. They will be brought to service stations by the organizers. Toilets There is a toilet at every service station. Signs are corresponding the color of race numbers. Runners of ¼ marathon may follow the signs of half marathon. Relay runners have green race numbers. Cyclist will be leading every start. Marathon relay Each relay team will be issued one chip (a transponder) with a Velcro Strap. Runners are to pass this to their teammates at the exchange points. Be sure each runner secures the chip to their ankle as instructed or risk not being accurately timed. First aid There is first aid station in connection to every service station. Additionally, there will be a first aid person cycling along the route. Interruption If you for some reason need to interrupt your race, please inform officials about it. Remember to return your chip as well. Finish Finish area is located at Varala Sports Institute. After you have crossed the finish line officials will take your chip and give you a medal. If you fail to return your chip we need to charge you 45 for it.

3 Relay runners will get their medals after each lap (three first at the exchange point, last one in the finish). Photos There will be two photographers along the route. Some of the photos will be uploaded to the website of the event afterwards. Varala Marathon reserves all rights to use photos taken during the race. AFTER THE RACE AT VARALA Service at the finish area There will be a service station at the finish area. There will be water, lemonade, coffee, bananas, pickled cucumber, buns and recovery drink available. Medal engraving There will be a possibility to have your medal engraved. The cost is 5. Showers and saunas In connection to dressing rooms there are also showers. There are also saunas beside the lake. They will be open during For women, saunas 2 and 3 and living room B have been reserved. For men, sauna 1 and living room A and log sauna have been reserved. You have a possibility to swim in the lake there. We will also serve you grilled sausages for free in front of the sauna building. First aid There is a first aid station, ambulance and two doctors at the finish area. If you have an illness that needs special medical care please write the details about it on the reverse side of your race number. Award ceremony Three best runners of each series will be rewarded with a trophy. They will be presented after the three best have crossed the finish line. Award ceremony will take place next to the finish service station. Results Results will be published at Liability Every runner participates on one s liability.
