BACHELOR OF BUSINESS STUDIES Information for International applicants The BBS is a 360 credit business degree taken part or full-time with starts in February or July. Full-time students take four 15 credit courses per semester (taking three years to complete). There are four majors: accounting; management; marketing or information systems. Students can also select an unendorsed option to give the maximum choice of courses at level 6 and 7. Students can take one or two majors in their qualification; they may also wish to consider a concurrent degree with the Bachelors of Computing Systems or Recreation and Sport. The programme distinguishes itself from many other similar degrees by being rather more practically orientated and also having a research element. You can expect a supportive environment with small classes and positive, experienced staff. With appropriate choices of elective courses (see Degree Electives below) the accounting major will enable graduates to meet the academic (provisional admission) requirements for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants in either the Chartered Accountant (CA) or Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) Colleges. Concurrent Bachelor of Business Studies and Bachelor of Computing Systems (BBS/BCS) The concurrent Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and Bachelor of Computing Systems (BCS) allow students to complete two separate degrees within four and a half years. The BBS/BCS concurrent degrees will provide students with a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge of areas vital to the business and computing industry, which will enable them to be work-ready. Concurrent Bachelor of Recreation and Sport and Bachelor of Business Studies (BRS/BBS) The concurrent Bachelor of Recreation and Sport (BRS) and Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) allow students to complete two separate degrees in 4½ years. The BRS/BBS concurrent degrees will provide students with sound knowledge in the recreation and sport areas and will give students a competitive advantage when seeking employment. Programme Ends Friday, 27 November 2015 ASSESSMENTS All assessments in the Bachelor of Business Studies courses are marked internally. Assessments include examinations, assignments, tests and practical demonstrations. Assessment is continuous throughout the semester, with two weeks for examinations at the end of each semester. PARTNERSHIPS Victoria University (Wellington) FACILITIES The campus is a pleasant environment for study with a range of general purpose rooms and lecture theatres all with data show equipment. In the state-of-the-art Information Technology Complex there are nine networked computer laboratories with 24 student stations in each. There are specific labs for software development, hardware, multimedia and a room for computer study. The facility also has a 50-seat tiered lecture theatre.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS English language entry requirement Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English Language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on TOEFL or IELTS (6.0 Academic) tests, completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT assessment. Entry with credit You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study while at high school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning. Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like to be considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application. You must apply prior to enrolment. RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course. An original transcript or notice of results from the institute at which you previously studied (or verified copies) will be required for all applications. For information and enquiries about Recognition of Prior Learning and Cross Credit please contact international@eit.ac.nz PRACTICUM, WORK EXPERIENCE The workplace component of the BBS degree involves two courses: 1. Business Operations. In this course, project work requiring you to investigate a particular aspect of an organisation will integrate the knowledge and skills developed in your foundation courses with realworld business operations. 2. Industry Based Learning. This is the capstone course in the degree. In your final year of study you will undertake a semesterlength project for a business organisation in its workplace. The course will integrate the specialist knowledge gained in your degree with the dynamics of business practice. 3. Business Project. A more in-depth version of Industry Based Learning. In addition other courses may involve site visits and/or guest speakers from industry. DEGREE ELECTIVES The structure of the BBS allows for up to six elective courses to be included in your degree. These courses can be in any reasonable topic at the appropriate level. A list of degree electives from other degree programmes as elective courses is available. ACADEMIC STAFF Our lecturers are highly trained professionals with particular areas of expertise in accountancy, management, economics, law, computing, marketing and statistics. Staff also maintain contacts with other professionals through organisations such as the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, the New Zealand Law Society and the New Zealand Institute of Management. ACCY5.01 Introduction to Accounting Business Operations To consolidate, through group work, the knowledge and skills which students have already encountered in foundation compulsory BBS courses. To encourage and further develop students work-related skills such as analysis, problem solving, decision making, team and communication skills, through their co-operatively confronting and solving realistic workplace issues whilst working in a team. COMM5.01 Organisational Communication and MGMT5.01 Introduction to Management Plus one of: LAWS5.01 Law for Business, ACCY5.01 Introduction to Accounting, ITSP5.01 Information Systems Principles or MKTY5.01 Marketing Principles Organisational Communication To develop students awareness of the demands of communicating within an organisation, and enhance their skills as practising communicators in writing, orally and in a variety of interpersonal settings within the business environment. Economic Principles To enable students to demonstrate a theoretical understanding of economic systems, economic behaviour of individuals and organisations in markets, and national and international economic activity. Data To provide students with an understanding of the way computers represent data and to give students an introduction to database systems. Introduction to Programming To equip students with a good knowledge of an event programming language and sound programming practices. The student will be able to translate a program specification into solutions and code, solve problems, conduct testing of solutions and fix errors. Information Systems Principles To enable students to gain an understanding of information systems concepts and issues and the principles of information processing, plus obtain a range of skills in order to develop and use personal information systems. Law for Business To introduce students to the structures and operation of Government, the New Zealand legal system and legal processes, the regulation of business, business structures and legal obligations and their application in the contemporary environment. Introduction to Management To introduce students to the concepts, skills and practices required in effective organisational management. Marketing Principles To introduce students to the field of marketing, including the functional, social and managerial dimensions of marketing. Quantitative Analysis To introduce students to the statistical techniques available for the summarisation, analysis and interpretation of data. BRIEF DESCRIPTION Financial Accounting To demonstrate and understand the role of financial statements and how financial transactions are recorded and reported within New Zealand. ACCY5.01 Introduction to Accounting Accounting Information Systems To introduce students to the application of computer technology to accounting information systems and the development of sound control within these systems. ACCY5.02 Accounting Applications, ITSP5.01 Information Systems Principles Public Relations To provide an understanding of the principles of public relations in building positive relationships between an organisation and its internal and external publics. Strategies and techniques for planning, implementing and evaluating an effective public relations programme will be practised. Project Management To enable students to specify the requirements for project planning; to use project management techniques and tools to monitor and control projects, using project management software, and applying quality control techniques. LAWS5.01 Law for Business Supply Chain Management To provide students with a framework for understanding supply chains and supply chain management. Designing and Improving Operations To have students examine activities that focus on the design and subsequent improvement of services and goods, and the processes used in their production. Human Resource Management To provide students with a detailed examination of human resource management (HRM) activities for the effective management of people in an organisation. Organisational Behaviour To provide students with a detailed examination of aspects of organisational behaviour concepts, principles, practices and issues with relevance to the modern workplace. Employment Relations To examine the Employment Relations processes, both formal and informal, and apply them so that the parties to the employment relations each achieve their mutual goals. Business Planning Students will be able to produce a business plan in the context of a defined business scenario or case study. The business plan will link financial, operations and marketing issues into a cohesive whole. Students will also be able to participate as a line manager in the construction of budgets. MKTY5.01 Marketing Principles Sales Practice To enable students to understand and apply the principles and practices of personal selling; the importance of personal selling to organisational performance; personal selling and salespeople in New Zealand; competencies needed to successfully manage sales function; and the various systems and processes that support it. Research Methods To introduce students to a range of research methods employed by researchers and practitioners in business disciplines. It explores the principles of scientific methods, examines the research process and research design, the analysis and evaluation of data sets and the preparation, writing and presentation of research material. QUAN5.01 Quantitative Analysis BRIEF DESCRIPTION Advanced Financial Accounting To develop an understanding and critical awareness of financial accounting and financial analysis issues within New Zealand and international contexts. ACCY6.01 Financial Accounting Advanced Management Accounting To identify and evaluate what cost management information is required, from where it is obtained, and how it is used and interpreted by management as they undertake their planning, controlling and decision-making responsibilities to achieve the overall success of business. ACCY6.02 Management Accounting Industry-Based Learning - Accounting To enable students to take responsibility for their own learning by completing an approved project in industry; demonstrate intellectual, personal and interpersonal competencies in the completion of their project and critically reflect upon the process undertaken in completing the project. 240 credits in the BBS including at least two of: ACCY6.01 Financial Accounting, ACCY6.02 Management Accounting, ACCY6.03 Principles of Managerial Finance or ACCY6.04 Accounting Information Systems Corporate Finance To enable students to apply the concepts, theory and analytical techniques of modern corporate finance to investment, financing and dividend decisions of a firm. ACCY6.03 Principles of Managerial Finance Special Topic in Accounting, Finance or Law To provide an opportunity for students to undertake an in-depth literature review that is of particular interest in accounting, finance or law. Permission to enrol will depend on the following factors: the student has sufficient grounding in the topic to be researched and the availability of a staff member to act as a supervisor and the student has a grade average of B+ or better. Approval of the BBS Programme Coordinator and RESM6.01 Research Methods, and 45 additional credits at Level 6 or above. Special Research Topic in Accounting, Finance or Law Special Research Topic in Accounting, Finance or Law To provide an opportunity for students to undertake empirical research in an area of accounting, finance or law that is of particular interest. The project will provide students with an opportunity to research, select, integrate and extend their knowledge of accounting practices within a specified sub-discipline.
