Union Assurance PLC reports balanced growth in first half of 2013 Union Assurance PLC (UA), a leading player in the Sri Lankan insurance sector, sustained its growth momentum in both turnover and profits during the first half of 2013. UA reported a growth rate of 10% in combined gross written premium and 21% growth in profit after tax compared to the same period of the previous year. The combined gross written premium of Rs. 5.2 billion in the first six months of 2013 was an increase of Rs. 490 million compared to Rs. 4.7 billion in the corresponding period. Non life insurance gross written premium recorded a 17% growth from Rs. 2.2 billion in 2012 to Rs. 2.6 billion in 2013. Both corporate and retail customer segments and all classes of non life insurance businesses reported a year on year growth. The life insurance segment contributed Rs. 2.6 billion to the combined GWP. Total net revenue for the period increased to Rs. 5.8 billion (2012 - Rs. 5 billion), a 17% growth when compared to the same period of 2012. Profit before tax amounted to Rs. 215 million, a 13% increase compared to the same period in 2012. Profit after tax increased by 21% to Rs. 190 million from Rs. 157 million in the first half of 2012, excluding the surplus from life insurance business which is determined after an actuarial valuation at the end of the year. As at 30 June 2013, UA s life fund (including the unit linked fund) stood at Rs. 17.9 billion with a healthy solvency ratio indicating the financial strength of the life business. NEWS by Learning and Development Beyond Boundaries towards a Sterling Performance An outbound training programme on team work was conducted for performing teams in the General Insurance Sales cadre. Two batches including 12 teams were selected for the training which was full of activities leading towards teamwork, team building and collective responsibility. Teams which have been performing continuously with full strength for the last six months had the privilege to be included in the programme. Trophies were presented to the winning team at the end of each programme. Young Talent of Union Assurance Shines at JCI Asia Pacific Conference Bernadine Jayasinghe of Union Assurance (UA), recently had the golden opportunity to represent Sri Lanka and to be selected to the top 3 finalists in the Asia and Pacific Conference - JCI World Public Speaking Championship Preliminary Rounds held in Gwangju, South Korea during 13 th June 16 th June 2013, with over 6000 delegates witnessing to the event. Top 8 contestants from the Asia Pacific regions represented their countries at this prestigious competition while the top speakers moved towards the honoured title of Best Speaker. The final round of speeches had top three contestants representing Sri Lanka (Ms. Bernadine Jayasinghe), India (Mr. Sheetaal Gandhi) and Hong Kong (Mr. Kit Ying). Bernadine was adjudged runners up at this event. It was a wonderful experience where I met many delegates from other countries and had the opportunity to learn and develop many skills which I will definitely carry forward in life. 5 dengue awareness programmes were held up to September in Narahenpita, Borella, Digana, Kandy, Mattakkuliya and Kolpetty. 1191 premises were visited by officials of the Ministry of Health, Public Health Department of CMC, Environmental Police and relevant branch staff of UA. 3 programmes have so far been conducted, namely in Puttalam, Dehiwela and Kotahena. 1124 school children in 23 school have been educated in safe practices while on the road. This is a programme conducted by the Sri Lanka Traffic Headquarters, sponsored by UA with a long term vision to create responsible citizens in the country. A programme to create awareness on safe driving while on the Southern Expressway was held on the 23rd and 25th of August in collaboration with the Southern Expressway Police and branch staff of UA. Toll gates were branded with stickers emphasizing the importance of using the seatbelt and maintaining proper speed limits. Relevant leaflets were also distributed at all entry points.
