For the first time in several years, the Chicago directors will include age group divisions for women and men, beginning at age 40 through age 70. The winner of each age group also will win a World Championship. As host, the city of Chicago and Chicago s squash community will have the opportunity to showcase Metro, Chicago s urban squash. Founded 10 years ago, Metro is a rigorous afterschool, weekend and summer providing academic, athletic, enrichment, college access and support to nearly 300 urban, underprivileged Chicago Public School students and their families. n May 6, Metro s success will be brightly displayed at the fficial pening of our new, fully funded $7 million Academic and Athletic Center located at 61 st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. City officials and community leaders are expected to attend. The Community Challenge 54% of Chicago Public School Students graduate from high school, and only 7.9% of 11 th grade students tested college ready 6% of CPS high school freshman will graduate from college in 6 years or less, only 39% of CPS students graduate high school and attend a 4 year college f the 11 schools in Woodlawn, 4 of the 11 schools were closed during the 3 CPS School Closures due to low or extremely low performance ratings, and 17% of the Woodlawn population age 18-9 reported not having received their high school diploma Based on the 0 Census, 8% of Woodlawn residents live below the poverty level, 18% of which reported being unemployed f the 71 communities in Chicago, Woodlawn is ranked 14 th in violent crime ratings and Washington Park is rated 5th The Metro Solution Founded in 005, Metro is a rigorous after-school, weekend and summer providing academic, athletic, enrichment, and college access and support to urban Chicago Public School ( CPS ) students and their families. The Metro student population is made up of 9% African American students, 6 % Latino, 1 % Asian, and 1 % reported bi-racial. f these students, 87% are reported as low and extremely low on the poverty scale, and receive free or reduced lunch at school based on the ratings given by Department of Family and Support Services in the City of Chicago Metro serves over 150 CPS students and their families in 5 th grade through sophomore year of college. Each student participates a minimum of 10 hours per week The prepares student to enter their best opportunity high school, get in, to, and through college, and become successful and contributing professionals Seven students have received full scholarships to attend prestigious boarding schools - Hotchkiss, Choate Rosemary Hall, Loomis Chafee, Blair Academy, Lake Forest Academy, Cate School, & Tabor Academy 17 Metro students are currently enrolled in college and receiving college scholarship and support.
