2 Page 2 A Letter from the Alumni Board Dear Friends, We are writing you with a sense of excitement and accomplishment for our 2008/2009 season.. A few months ago, a small group of Swimming and Diving alumni began working with Miami University s athletic administration to formalize a way to support the program. The goal we set-forth when we started is complete, and we are proud to announce the Miami University Men s Swimming and Diving Alumni Board and our official communication. As stated in our newly approved bylaws, it is the mission of the alumni board to promote the following initiatives: A. Alumni Engagement Increase alumni engagement by providing consistent communication regarding the men s swimming & diving team, and by providing opportunities for camaraderie through events organized by the board B. Endowment of Scholarships Promote the endowment of additional scholarships designated for men s swimming & diving C. Career Networking Provide opportunities for career networking for student-athletes and alumni The newly established Board has already achieved a few milestones which we can all be proud of, including: Created and started correspondence via this newsletter Obtained a letter from Athletic Director Brad Bates stating that any new money raised for men s swimming & diving scholarships will be used as additional funding for men s swimming & diving scholarships Set aggressive one and three year goals to help endow additional scholarships...we are incredibly excited for our initial progress, but we ll need all of your participation to achieve our full potential Activation of alumni web page: where you can register to stay up to date! Overall, we are incredibly excited for our initial progress, but we ll need all of your participation to achieve our full potential in reaching out to others, and in helping to support our current student-athletes. Please, take a minute to get acquainted with the things we have going on, and don t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Love and Honor, Todd Foley 97 Kelly Ball 03 Eric DiSalle 02 Peter Gabler 00 President Vice President Engagement Chair Endowment Chair
3 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Scholarship Scoreboard Men s Swimming & Diving Scholarship Quick Stats NCAA Maximum # of Scholarships 9.9 Current # of Full Scholarships for Miami 4.0* Amount Needed to Endow EACH Full In-State Scholarship $425,000 Minimum Donation Required to Establish an Endowment $25,000 What does this mean? Miami currently awards 4* scholarships for the Men s Swimming and Diving team, even though the NCAA allows up to 9 scholarships to be awarded each year for Men s Swimming and Diving programs. It takes $425,000 will fully endow one full in-state scholarship. *Plus out-of-state waivers. Fundraising Goals The Alumni Board has set three ambitious goals for the next three years: Increase alumni donation participation to 90% through whatever way you see fit to help Miami Athletics and/or Men s Swimming and Diving! Raise an additional $68,000 for the Pete Lindsay/Raymond Ray Endowed Scholarship by Achieve $425,000 by Endowed Scholarship. The endowment is currently $182,000 and will begin providing a partial scholarship when the fund achieves $250,000 in gifts. The Alumni Board asks each of you to give the best of your ability. If we each do a little, we can accomplish a lot! - Scholarships that are currently awarded and which have a significant impact on Miami Men s Swimming and If we each do a little, we can accomplish a lot. Diving that you may also choose to support include: William D. Mulliken Scholarship Larry Lyons Memorial Scholarship Alexander Blavatnik Family Scholarship Or establish a scholarship of your own! The Alumni Board has identified the greatest way for most alumni to impact our scholarships is to contribute to the Pete Lindsay/ Raymond Ray
4 Page 4 Ways to Give There are many ways to contribute financially to an athletic program all gifts make a direct impact on Miami s studentathletes. Join the Red & White Club The Red & White Club is the membership organization that supports Miami University Athletics annual scholarship needs. Your gift can be earmarked toward Men s swimming and diving, and funding goes toward the total scholarship cost for Men s Swimming and Diving for that year. Give Directly to Men s Swimming These funds are directly accessible to the coach, and can be used wherever he/she sees fit (equipment, apparel, travel, etc). Essentially, this provides funding to be used for programmatic needs outside of scholarship dollars. These gifts do not count toward Red & White Club membership....all gifts make a direct impact on Miami s studentathletes. Contribute to Endowments Endowments are invested funds in perpetuity and provide distributions annually. Once the endowment reaches the $25,000 level (or other noted gift amount, such as the Pete Lindsay/ Raymond Ray Endowment), it is then awarded for the desired purpose. While endowments do exist for a variety of programs and capital projects, they are frequently designated in athletics for scholarships. These gifts do not count toward Red & White Club membership. What is the difference between the Red & White Club Scholarship Fund and a Scholarship Endowment? Gifts to the Red & White Club are annually used directly toward scholarships. For example, if you give $1,000 to the Red & White Club, it will go directly to scholarship for a student-athlete that year. If you give $1,000 to a specific scholarship endowment, that $1,000 will be placed in a fund that will continually gain interest over time. The larger the principal in the endowment, the more significant the distribution. To contribute to the Pete Lindsay/ Raymond Ray scholarship, or if you d like to support Miami University Athletics in other ways, feel free to use the form below. If you have any questions, or if you would like more information, please contact the Athletic Development Office at (513) or at RWClub@muohio.edu. Yes! I would like to support Miami Athletics! 5 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 5 Message from Athletic Director, Brad Bates Given history, the Board wanted a commitment from the Athletic Department and University to the longevity of our program. Further, we wanted to provide additional dollars to the team as opposed to replacing existing money and reducing the University s responsibility for support. We believe the letter below is a significant step in the right direction from our current Athletic Director, Brad Bates. He is committed to our program and continuing our history of excellence, and, to helping it move forward. May 12, 2008 Dear Todd, Thanks for your continued support of Miami Athletics, and, in particular, the Men s Swimming and Diving Program. As the first president of the Men s Swimming and Diving Alumni Board, I wanted to reach out to you to confirm your conversation with Ken Peters and Jude Killy of our department regarding scholarships. Essentially, Miami is committed to awarding NEW scholarships to the program for any new endowed scholarship commitments as of this date, including allocation of the Pete Lindsay/ Raymond Ray Scholarship, which has been started but not fully endowed to date. Therefore, our commitment is that new scholarships create new funding for the program, up until it is fully funded per NCAA rules, and, that gifts to this or other new scholarships do not provide funding as replacement dollars for other scholarships. We were able to provide additional funding this year through a recently gifted scholarship and are looking forward to helping provide opportunities to more Miami men s swimmers in the future. I have been in touch with various folks within the University and have also received this assurance from them noting that we will remain in compliance with University policies, and, other governing laws, by adhering to the above. If you have any questions, or, if you need anything else, please do not hesitate to let us know. Again, thank you for your time, support, and, leadership they are greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Brad Bates Director of Athletics Get Involved Interested in the Alumni Board? Want to get involved?
