(This is not in any way an official Apple document and is being supplied as is, hoping it might prove helpful. Let me know if you find errors. You can share with others, but please don t post publicly.) Requirements: - Mac running 10.7 or later. (Consider purchasing a Mac with a solid state drive to use with your cart. You will gain significant speed when running the configurator tool with a computer with an SSD over a regular ATA drive.) We ll call this Mac the Supervisor. - A copy of Apple Configurator (free) downloaded from the Mac App store. Make sure you are on the latest version. Check the Mac App store for any updates. - - A generic email that you will use to create an Apple ID that will be used to download all apps, free or paid. - Enrollment in Apple s volume purchase program (VPP) if you are going to distribute paid apps. Information about the program can be found here: <http://www.apple.com/education/volume-purchase-program/> - No folder named SC Info in /Users/Shared folder. Here s how to check whether you have that folder and how to remove: 1. Choose Go > Go to Folder. 2. Type /Users/Shared/SC Info and click Go. 3. If Finder is not already set to column view, set it by choosing View > as Columns.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 2 4. If you see the SC Info folder, move it to the Trash and restart the computer. - All ipads placed in Cart. Cart power plugged in. All 30 pin cables unplugged from ipads except the ipad in Slot 1. USB cable from cart connected to your Supervisor Mac. Note: Once a device has been "Supervised" using Apple Configurator, it cannot be managed by another installation of Apple Configurator. (You can move the configurator files to another computer and transfer the Supervisor responsibilities to this new computer by restoring a backup. See instructions in this Knowledge Base article: <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5194>.) Supervised simply means that these ipads will need to connect to this Apple Configurator when needing an update to the ios or when copying new Apps onto the ipads or updating the ones already installed. All communication is done through a USB connection. At this point in time (9/9/12), Apple Configurator does not communicate with the ipads wirelessly. Setting up the ipads Step one: Create an Apple ID with your generic email account. (We are following the following steps so we can create an ID that is not tied to a credit card.) 1. Launch itunes. 2. Select itunes Store 3. Search for a free app. ibooks is a good one, or Doodle Buddy, or StoryKit or one that you have identified that you want to use. 4. You will be asked for an Apple ID. Choose Create New Account. 5. Now follow directions. Once you get to the screen where you are entering your generic email, you will be asked for a password for this new ID. You will need to include one numeral, one uppercase letter and a total of 8 characters.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 3 6. Choose 3 security questions and provide some generic (but memorable) answers. 7. Choose a generic birthdate. Apple is checking that you are 13 years or older. I usually recommend choosing some date that you then use for all generic email/apple ID birthdays. Something like 1/1/1980. 8. Now take a screenshot of that page so you have a record of what you did. (Choose the Command-Shift-4 keys and lift your fingers. Now select the spacebar and you can click the cursor on the Provide Apple ID Details page. The screenshot will be saved on your Desktop. 9. Hit Continue and you will find yourself at the Credit Card selection window. Select None. 10. Now fill in some generic information. Even though you are choosing None for a credit card, you will need to provide this information. Don t forget to choose a Title. 11. Now do another screenshot of this information. 12. Apple will send a verification email to that email so you will need to check this email. If you have Webmail, that is usually the easiest way to do it. Otherwise, when you are provided the generic email by your email administrator, ask him/her to forward mail from the generic email to your regular email account.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 4 13. Once you have verified your Apple ID, select Authorize this Computer from itunes Store menu 14. Enter your new Apple ID and password. 15. Once itunes responds that the computer is authorized, check in the upper-righthand corner that this Apple ID is showing as signed into the store. If not, select Sign In and complete the sign in steps. 16. Now selecting the itunes store again and search for that free app. This time indicate you have an Apple ID and complete the download. 17. Quit itunes. Step Two: Create a master backup to use for the ipads. 1. Launch Apple Configurator. 2. Under the Apple Configurator menu, choose Preferences. 3. Under the General button, if you are going to allow users to add apps beyond those you provide, you will want to uncheck Automatically refresh and Remove apps and profiles Configurator did not install. Otherwise, leave as is. 4. If you want to have the lock screen display a device name or some other wording, select the Lock Screen button and choose accordingly. 5. If you want to hear a sound when an action has completed, select a sound under the Play sound on completion pulldown menu. Then, close the Preferences window. 6. You will notice that there is a 1 next to Apple Configurator s prepare icon indicating that the Supervisor computer is recognizing the USB connection to the ipad in the cart s first slot.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 5 7. See screenshot for setting the initial choices for getting this ipad authenticated with Apple. Notice that Supervision is set to On. 8. Select the Prepare button at the bottom of Apple Configurator s window. 9. This may take a little time because it is going to go through a download of the lastest operating system. You will see a green bubble by the device when it is complete. 10. Now choose the Stop button at the bottom of the Apple Configurator window. 11. Remove the ipad in the first slot from the cart. We are going to prepare it before using it to create a master backup. Follow the setup screens. I typically choose to allow Location services and don t send diagnostic information to Apple, skip the Apple ID and set up as a new ipad. 12. Here are some things you may want to do: a. Rearrange the icons in the multi-touch window. b. Rearrange the icons in the Dock. For instance, if you aren t going to use the Mail app, remove it. This is done by touching on any one of the app icons with your finger until all icons are jigging. Now while the app icons are jiggling, you can move things around. To remove an app from the dock, just drag it up/away from the Dock. c. Create a folder of Not Used apps. Again, while app icons are jiggling, you can drag one app on top of another, creating a folder. Just give the folder a name. You can even drag the folder onto a second icon panel by dragging it to the right all the way to the edge screen. Keep pushing to the right and it will jump to the next page.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 6 d. Choose different brightness settings and/or wallpaper. (Settings/Brightness & Wallpaper). e. Set some restrictions that can t be configured with Apple Configurator s Profiles. Here are two that schools sometimes want to do. Currently, neither of these can be set through Apple Configurator s Profile settings. (1) In Settings/General/Restrictions, choose to enable restrictions. Choose a 4 digit code that students are not likely to guess. (2) Set Delete Apps to Off if you don t want students to delete apps. (3) Set Accounts to Don t Allow Changes if you don t want students to create email accounts with the Mail app.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 7 13.When you ve made all the changes you want to make, connect the ipad back to the cart. Choose your ipad under the Supervise tab, name it something like Cart-A 1 and then under Restore select Back Up. 14. Give you backup a name like ipad Master. 15. Now select the Prepare button and make the settings you want to apply to the other ipads 16.Choose Supervision on, now if you want to number sequentially you can start at 2 since the first ipad already is numbered 1. Choose you ipad Master backup under the Restore pulldown menu. 17. Now select the Prepare button at the bottom of the Apple Configurator window. It will continue to run until you select Stop. To keep your ipads numbered in an orderly sequence, start plugging each ipad into its 30-pin connector in order. Wait until each ipad shows up in Apple Configurator s list and then go on to the next ipad until they are all connected. 18. Let them all complete the prepare process and then select the Stop button. NOTE: Currently there is no way to do an encrypted backup when you make the master. Therefore, the Restrictions passcode doesn t survive with the master backup. For now, you will need to re-enter the Restrictions passcode manually after completion of the Prepare step. Step three: Manage your supervised ipads 1. Now it is time to add some profiles and some apps. 2. Examples of things you can do with profiles are set up the wireless configuration so the ipads join the wireless network automatically, create Web clips for sites users want to access regularly, and provide restrictions above/beyond what is set locally.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 8 3. To set up a Profile,Select the Supervise menu and then the Settings tab. 4. In the Profiles window select the + in the lower left-hand corner and choose Create New Profile. You can have more than one Profile. 5. Give you Profile a name. Examples: Student Profile; Teacher Profile; Wireless Profile 6. Under Security, decide whether users can delete profiles, can delete with authorization, or can never delete the profiles. 7. Now configure at least one of the categories. Example: Wireless settings. Choose Wi-Fi and fill in the appropriate settings. 8. Choose Restrictions. Here you have three categories of choice: Functionality, Applications and Media. If you are going to install apps, then don t uncheck Allow installing apps. If you want to disable the ability to install apps, get the apps on first and then revise the Profile and refresh the ipads. Look through all three tabs and the choices.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 9 9. Another configuration to consider is Web Clip. If students will be accessing certain Web sites frequently, you can create one or more Web Clips so that access to those sites will appear as an application. 10.Now choose the Apps tab and upload as many free apps from itunes as you have downloaded with your new Apple ID. Select the + button in the lower lefthand corner of the Apps window. You should be directed to the /Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications folder of the user who is logged in.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 10 11. If apps still need to be added that have been purchased within the volume purchase program, you will need a download of the redemption codes for each app purchased. Here are the steps to work with VPP purchases: a. If you are the facilitator (buyer), log into the VPP portal and download the redemption codes. If you are not the facilitator, ask the facilitator (buyer) to send you the first redemption code on each app list.. b. Launch itunes. Select itunes Store and then Redeem under the Quick Links section in the upper right-hand corner. c. Now cut/paste the first redemption code from each of your spreadsheets in order to download one copy of each app. d. If you are the VPP facilitator, download the spreadsheets from the VPP facilitator portal. e. Now go to the apps tab in Apple Configurator and add these apps. You will see a notice that paid apps require you to import the codes. Before importing the codes, these paid apps show a 0 and a warning triangle to indicate you need to import the spreadsheet. Touch on the 0 and you will be directed to import the corresponding spreadsheet. Once imported, you should see the correct number of codes that have been purchased. Now you are ready to distribute to ipads.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 11 Tips on Working with Groups of ipads You can add apps and/or apply Profiles to groups of ipads. You can apply the settings at the USB Connected level, the All Devices level, or set up groups that you want to treat differently even though they are in the same cart. Perhaps you are handing out some ipads to first grade classrooms that have different apps than ipads assigned to second grade classrooms. Here are the steps for working with groups: 1. Just select the + at the bottom of the Supervised Devices column. Now give the group a name. 2. Once you have all your devices supervised, select All Devices to show all your ipads. 3. Now drag/drop ipads into the groups as appropriate. 4. Now for each group, select All ipads which is showing the number of ipads in that group. Make your settings for that group as appropriate. If you are only applying Profile changes or adding/removing apps, you want to set Restore to Don t Restore Backup and don t check Number sequentially... TIP: If you don t want users to install apps, use a Profile to set this in Restrictions. Now hit refresh to exchange the existing Profile on the ipads that allows installing with the Profile that disallows adding apps. Just remember you will need to reverse these steps should you have additional apps to install.

9/9/12 v.1.0! 12 Quick Start Checklist 1 Make sure there is no /Users/Shared/SC Info folder. 2 Create Apple ID with no credit card, based on generic email. 3 Authorize itunes Store with new Apple ID. 4 Make sure that Apple ID is signed into store. 5 Place ipads in Cart, only connecting the one in slot 1. 6 Open Apple Configurator. 7 Under Prepare --> Settings, Set "Supervision" to "On". 8 Hit the "Prepare" button at the bottom. 9 Once supervision is complete unplug the ipad and complete the ios Setup Process on that ipad. 10 Select English 11 Select United States 12 Select Enable Location Services 13 Attach to WiFi Network 14 Setup as new ipad 15 Skip Apple ID step by selecting "Skip This Step" 16 Accept Terms and Conditions 17 Choose whether to automatically send Diagnostics & Usage Data 18 Start using ipad 19 Plug back into Apple Configurator 20 Under Supervised section select ipad 21 Under Settings, go to the "Restore" drop down box 22 Select "Back up" 23 Name the back up 24 Once complete unplug the device. 25 Now, plug in the other ipads, one at a time so the names get applied 26 sequentially according to position in cart. Under Prepare --> Settings, Set "Supervision" to "On" 27 Under the Restore drop down box select the backup created in step 10 above 28 Hit prepare From here move to the "Supervise" pane and select the Profiles & Apps you'd like to have installed on all devices and hit "refresh".
