1. Problem For green roof, there has to be a guarantee of a long-term protection against root penetration. There will be a high resistance demand of waterproofing used on green roof. The goal of this test is to establish if the G476-12 1.2mm PVC waterproofing, reinforced by glass fiber, offered by Sarnafil Waterproofing Systems (Shanghai) Ltd., could give a satisfactory root penetration protection. 2. Test The test was carried out according to JC/T1075-2008 Attachment A (standard attachment). The test started in June, 2007 and ran over for 2 years till June, 2009. In the test, there were 6 boxes with G476-12 PVC and 12 control boxes, including 2 with EPDM, 2 with SBS, 2 with reinforced SBS, 2 with APP and 4 without any. The PVC, which had passed regular tests, was installed in the test boxes by Sarnafil Waterproofing Systems (Shanghai) Ltd. The 8 boxes of control s were installed by different installation companies. Samples of the tested both before and after the test are kept for record in the lab. 3. Statement on tested by the manufacturer The test on the root penetration resistance performance should consider the basic performance and data of the material itself and has a close relationship with the material production and overlap technique. For the basic performance and data of the tested material, G476-12 1.2mm PVC waterproofing reinforced by glass fiber, pls see Page 2 of this report. 4. Result 4.1 Growth of plants The plants grew in a good condition since June 2007, in compliance with the requirements of JC/T1075-2008 Root Penetration Resistance of Waterproof Sheets for Green Roof System. It was observed that there were no differences regarding to the growth of plants in the test boxes and control boxes 4.2 Roots penetrating into or through Page 3of 7
4.2.1 During the test At the first evaluation in January of 2008, it was observed through the transparent box bottom that a lot roots had penetrated through SBS and reinforced SBS into the humid layer in the control boxes. At the second evaluation in July 2008, it was observed that a lot roots had penetrated EPDM and APP. It proved that the roots have a strong penetrating ability. At the evaluation in January 2008, it was observed that a lot plant roots had penetrated into the ceramicite humid layer. During the whole test period, no roots were observed from the transparent bottom of the boxes with the tested PVC. 4.2.2 At the end of the test At the second evaluation in July 2008, clear up the control boxes with the penetrating roots and check the control s to evaluate the roots penetrating into and through the. EPDM: it was observed that there are roots penetrating into and through the after one year (Table 1). Check separately the roots penetrating through the field area, seamless corner and joints. As only a few roots penetrated through the, check the whole 1.44m 2 area of the tested. Check separately the roots penetrating into field area, seamless corner and joints. As a lot roots penetrated into the, cut a 110cm*20cm sample without any joints, 15% of the whole area of the tested (including the stand area) Picture 1, from the tested.
