ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT Austin Health is one of Victoria s largest health care providers. Comprised of Austin Hospital, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre, Austin Health is a major teaching and research centre with numerous university and research institute affiliations. Catering to diverse multicultural and veteran communities, Austin Health delivers vital state-wide services to Victorians and a vast array of specialty services to the people of Melbourne s northeastern corridor in a safety-focussed, team-orientated and stimulating work environment. 2. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT (Role of the department including any special features of the workplace and relationships) This position is located in the Medical and Cognitive Research Unit (MCRU), which is part of the Sub-acute Clinical Services CSU at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital where the majority of the services offered by the Aged and Residential Care Services are located. Associate Professor Michael Woodward is the head of the Medical and Cognitive Research Unit and Department Head for Aged and Residential Care Services. MCRU has 2-3 additional geriatricians who are Principal Investigators/Sub Investigators, and 5 Study Coordinators and one Casual Administrative Assistant. Aged and Residential Care Inpatient Services consist of two 28-bed Rehabilitation/Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) wards - Wards 11 & 12, Ward 9 - a 27 bed Aged Care Unit incorporating an 8 bed Cognitive Assessment and Management (CAM) Program and a new 24 bed Acute GEM Ward -Ward10. Aged Care Services also operate a 60-bed high level residential care facility - Darley House. Referrals to Wards 11 & 12 are primarily from the acute wards at the Austin Hospital but may also come from the Emergency Department, community or other health care facilities. The Community Programs offered by Aged Care Services include an Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS), Extended Aged Care at Home Packages (EACH), EACH Dementia (EACH D), Community Aged Care Packages (CACPS), Transition Care Program (TCP) and Restorative Care (RC). Our Ambulatory Services which are now managed by the Ambulatory and Continuing Care directorate include the HARP funded Community Link Rapid Response Service (Clink), Community Rehabilitation Centre (CRC), Planned Activity Group (PAG), HACC funded Allied Health Program, Continence Service, Memory Service, Falls and Balance Service and Wound Clinic. An Aged Care medical inpatient consultancy service is located at the Austin Hospital. Aged Care Services has a strong focus on continuous quality improvement and is actively involved in research with many clinical trials in dementia and wound being managed by our Medical and Cognitive Research Unit. A well-established Volunteer program operates in the Wards, Darley House and Ambulatory and Community Services. Volunteers also work in MCRU. 3. POSITION OBJECTIVE (Primary purpose and key performance objective) The Management of MCRU where clinical trails are conducted in Dementia and Wound Healing, under the direction of the Associate Professor Michael Woodward. His/her role will be to oversee the conduct of clinical research projects, liaise effectively with study sponsors and other key personnel, increase the profile of MCRU, undertake and increase participant recruitment, to act as a resource for other staff members of the MCRU, providing leadership and financial management of the unit. 4. POSITION REQUIREMENTS (Main duties and other specific requirements, activity and end result/outcome, regularly performed) Position specific Regular liaison with Associate Professor Woodward and other key members of Aged Care Services Organise regular meetings with MCRU staff Provide leadership to MCRU staff. Financial management of the department, including building up and monitoring budgeting performance. Liaise with pharmaceutical and research company representatives. Recruitment of research participants Assist the study coordinators as required with their studies-which may involve being a back up coordinator, study rater, ethics applications and other ethics communication. Attend and participate in appropriate Aged & Residential Care meetings. Ability to be flexible with working hours Liaise regularly with the Memory Clinic Staff-keep them updated about current studies, attend Memory Clinic meetings Generic Abide by Austin Health corporate policies and practices as varied from time to time. Participate in Austin Health performance appraisal program as required. Undertake not to reveal to any person or entity any confidential information relating to patients and employees, policies, processes and dealings and not to make public statements relating to the affairs of Austin Health without prior authority of the Chief Executive Officer. Actively participate in the ongoing identification, assessment, treatment and prevention of risks. Participate in the emergency incident response activities, as defined within the Emergency Response Manual, as and when required, at the direction of management. Management/supervisory (applicable only to positions with management responsibilities) Ensure a high level of work quality, develop, implement and monitor quality improvement activities within the department/ward, in accordance with Austin Health Policies as varied from time to time. Ensure safe work practices and environment in accordance with Austin Health Policies as varied from time to time. Ensure that Incident management systems are appropriately applied and a systematic response to local issues and performance improvement occurs. Mandatory Training * Ensure all new employees on commencement in the department/unit complete e-learning training on Fire Safety and Bullying & Harassment. * Ensure that, at any given time, up to 80% of employees in the department/unit have completed e-learning training on Fire Safety and Bullying & Harassment. * Ensure that employees responsible for acting as Fire Wardens complete Fire Warden training every two (2) years and within one (1) month of commencing as Fire Warden. 5. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA (Key skills, qualifications, knowledge and behavioural attributes, together with physical requirements, necessary for performance of the role) Essential for Performance of the Position A commitment to Austin Health values: Integrity, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. Previous experience as a Clinical Trial Coordinator or Clinical Research Associate (CRA). Ability to manage budget and organise appropriate staff and amount of staff hours to cover the workload Knowledge of GCP in research guidelines Excellent time management skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to solve conflict effectively Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with the other members of the health care team/sponsors Ability and desire to team-build A sound understanding of information technology including clinical systems, ability to learn applications relevant to the Management of rostering and risk management reporting or as required for the role and/or department.
